 Assume half-lying position, well supported with pillows, knees bent and
feet flat.

1. Knee rolling exercise


Purposes
Following are the purposes of knee rolling exercise
• Helps prevent backache and minimizes leg cramps
Instruct the mother to do the following procedures
 Lie on the back with knees bent and feet flat.
 Keep the shoulders down flat, lower both the knees slowly to the left,
return them to center and then over to the right
 Repeat in a rhythmical manner and gradually increase the range of
movement.
2. Hip up drawing exercise
Purposes: Following are the purposes of hip up drawing: Dorsiflexion of foot
stretches the calf muscles and relieves cramps
Instruct the mother to do the following procedures:
 Lie on the back with the left knee bent and the right knee straight.

 Then keeping the leg straight, shorten again by pulling up from the waist
 Repeat with the right knee bent and left one straight.
9. Tailor press exercise Demonst
Purposes: Following are the purposes of Tailor press exercise: ration
 Strengthen perineal muscle.
 Increase perineal circulation.
 Make more pelvic joints pliable.
 Helps relieve lower back pain, and strengthen the hip, thigh and pelvic
muscles.
Instruct the mother to do the following procedures:
 Sit with knees bent and place the soles of feet together.
 Pull feet closer to body.
 Place hands underneath knees.

3. Swimming: Swimming is one of the best exercises for women who are in
the first trimester of their pregnancy. It is a good way to stretch and tone
your muscles. It is a wonderful cardiovascular workout which promises to
keep you healthy.

Second trimester exercise-


1. Deep breathing exercise
2. Gentle neck & shoulder roll - Roll your head back and forth, right and
left, and in circles clockwise and counter clockwise along with slow
gentle breaths. Similarly, do with the shoulder blades. Benefit: Releases
tension from head, neck and shoulder area.
3. Pelvic tilting
4. Child pose-Keep your knees and thighs separate, and gently bend
forward, placing your forehead on floor or on the cushion in front. Extend
arms forward, palms pressed into the floor. Rest with gentle breaths:

5. Warrior pose: Widen your legs such that they are hip-width apart. Twist
the right heel and point the toes outward. Use the left heel to ground
yourself. The arch of your left heel should be in line with the right foot.
Lower the hips and radiate all your energy out as you stretch out your
arms. The arms must be in line with the shoulders. Look forward. Breathe Demonst
long and deep and hold the pose only until you are comfortable. Release, ration
and repeat on the other side.
Benefit: Strengthens ankles, knees, shoulders, arms, legs, and back, and
energizes whole body.

6. HERO POSE: Kneel on the floor. Bring your big toes together and
separate the heels. Lower your buttocks onto the inside surface of the feet,
with your heels touching the side of your hips. Place your hands on your
knees, palms down. Your back and head should be straight, but not tense.
Benefit: A Strengthens the thigh muscles. Enhances digestive functions.
Relieves stomach ailments and strengthens pelvic muscles.

8. BUTTERFLY POSE: Sit with your legs outstretched. Bend your knees ration
and bring the soles of the feet together. Hold your feet with both hands.
Gently bounce your knees up and down, using the elbows as levers to
press the legs down. Do not use any force. Hold the pose as long as
comfortable but not more than 5 minutes.
Benefit: Stimulates your heart and improves blood circulation. Relieves fatigue
and anxiety.

9. CAT POSE: Place hands and knees on mat while exhaling, round your
neck and bring you chin toward your chest. Return to straight spine while
exhaling. Hold it as long as you feel comfortable but not more than 15
seconds.

10. TRIANGLE POSE: Stand with your feet apart breathing in, and bring
your arms parallel to the floor. Breathing out, extend and bend on your
right side to bring the right hand closer to the right foot. Hold. Breathing
in, slowly come up, and then relax. Repeat on the other side

Benefit: Stimulates and improves blood circulation through the entire


body. Relieves aches and pains from back legs and whole body.

Third trimester exercises:

In the third trimester, keep your exercises moderate, keep up with pelvic floor
exercises, choose walking over running.

1. FULL SHOULDER ROTATION: Place the right fingertips up on the right


shoulder. Slowly rotate the arm and shoulder joint around, as if drawing a
large circle with the tip of the elbow. Inhale when opening the chest as the
elbows go backwards, and exhale when the elbows move towards touching at
the front.

Benefit: Improves circulation & flexibility in the shoulders & upper back.
Releases tension from around the heart and lungs. Encourage better breathing.

2. SQUAT AND RISE POSE OR GODDESS POSE: Stand erect on your feet
about a meter apart, with your toes turned out. Interlock the fingers of both
hands and let them hang loosely in front of the body. Slowly bend your knees Demonst

3. PALM TREE POSE: Stand with your feet together and your arms at your
side. As you inhale, raise your arms over your head, interlock your fingers,
and then turn the palms upward. As you exhale, place your hands over your
head. Inhale and stretch your arms, shoulders and chest upwards. While
exhaling, bring your hands on top of your head.

4. HAND RAISING POSE: Stand with your feet together and arms by your
sides. Breathing in, extend both arms overhead. Gently stretch up. Breathing
out, release the stretch. Next, extend both arms overhead. Breathing in, gently
stretch your right arm longer than your left, and then, breathing out, release
the stretch. Similarly repeat for the left arm and and keep alternating between
the right and left arms at moderate pace.

sleep, reducing swelling or backache pregnancy, making labor and Demonst

excercises. not only relieves pregnancy related ailments but it also helps to cope during
antenatal, intranatal and postnatal period. Antenatal excercises help to develop a
good posture, relieve minor discomfort such as backache, constipation and
insomnia
