environment

3
Purpose of Training

The purpose of this training is to identify the hazards

in reversing and reduce the incident/accident from
reversing by taking preventative measures outlined in
this training and to provide guidance on the activity
of reversing to ensure safe operations.

4
Banksman

This is a dedicated, trained person who is responsible to keep the reversing area free of pedestrians and
to ensure safe vehicle movements. Only properly trained people who have demonstrated a good
understanding of the blind spots/areas and the sweep path of a reversing vehicle should be designated.
Banks man shall be provided for trailers, JCBs, earth moving equipment, water tankers, excavators and
low loaders. This list is not exhaustive.
The training should include the following:
• Understand the signals to be used
• Importance of adequate supervision
• Ensure eye contact is established prior to start and maintained throughout
• A recommended system of signaling

• Should be able to observe the load and other workmen at all times.

• Must always be in plain view of the operator/driver.

• Never assume anything.

• Make sure both workers and operators understand exactly what is expected to
safely move the load

7
Responsibilities

BANKSMAN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFE MANVOURE OF VEHICLE AND MOBILE MACHINERY AT SITE
AND MUST MAKE SURE THAT:
• Entrances and Exits Shall be Clearly Defined
• Access to Work Area Will be Restricted by use of Barriers, Warning Signs and Close Supervision

• Good visibility is key at all times!!!

9
Moving Machinery

• NEVER stand or pass in front/behind of a moving vehicle or machinery at any

time

10
Whilst Reversing

• Use agreed-upon hand signals to communicate with the driver/operator;
• Remain visible at all times to the driver/operator (where you can see be seen);
• Detect and understand the effect of blind spots/areas by maintaining a clear
view of the hazard area (blind spot/area) behind the vehicle;
• Stay clear of the path of the reversing vehicles;
• Avoid walking backwards;
• Ensure no one is behind the vehicle/machine before signaling the
driver/operator to start reversing;
• Immediately signal the driver/operator to stop if any person or object enters
the area behind the truck;

Good Communication is Vital

• Proper communication must be maintained between the operator and

banksman. During the work (excavation, material shifting, reversing etc)
banksman should give hand signals but and operators must observe and follow;

• Strictly advise all Banksmen, if operators are not following your instructions and
signals, STOP the work and report immediately to concerned PTW Holder and
HES. This message will pass through all HSE meeting and TBT sections.

21
Final Thought

• The banksman will keep you safe, and ensures you have sight of what you are
doing at all times;
• Failure to position him correctly, and to follow his instructions, is like driving
with a blindfold;
• Stay safe at all times!!!
