Aim:
To preventive maintenance of Oil immersed Manuel Star delta starter.
Theory:
An oil-immersed manual Star Delta starter is a type of electrical starter that uses oil as
a coolant and insulator. It’s designed for starting and controlling motors in industrial
applications.Oil-immersed starters have oil-immersed coils, tripping coils, and
contacts, which absorb coil temperature and contact sparking. They also have a
sequence device that ensures proper operation sequences. Oil-immersed starters
provide superior insulation and cooling, which enhances durability and longevity. The
star-delta configuration ensures a soft start, which reduces mechanical stress and
extends the lifespan of equipment.
In a Star Delta starter, the motor windings are connected in a Star configuration (Y-
connection) during starting, and then switched to a Delta configuration (∆-connection)
once the motor is running. This allows for:Reduced starting current, Smooth
acceleration and Increased motor efficiency.
The starter uses a Star Delta circuit configuration to start and control the motor. This
circuit configuration is commonly used for starting three-phase induction motors. They
are suitable for heavy starting loadmachines. The Oil-Immersed Manual Star Delta
Starter is commonly used in industrial applications, such as:
Controlling motors for pumps, compressors, and conveyor systems.
Starting and stopping motors in manufacturing processes.
Controlling motors in power plants and distribution systems.
Working:
1.Manual Operation: The operator manually turns the handle to start theMotor.
2. Star Connection: The starterConnects the motor windings in a Star (Y-connection)
configuration.
3.Low Voltage Start: The motor starts at a lower voltage, reducing the starting
current.
4.Oil Immersion: The starter’s electrical components are immersed in oil, which
cools and insulates them.
5.Current Limiting: The starter limits the current to prevent overheating and damage.
6.Acceleration: The motor accelerates to its rated speed.
7.Delta Connection: Once the motor reaches a certain speed (usually 70-80% of rated
speed), the starter switches the motor windings to a Delta (∆-connection)
configuration.
8.Full Voltage: The motor now operates at full voltage, producing maximum torque.
9.Monitoring: The starter continuously monitors the motor’s performance and adjusts
the current limit as needed.
10.Manuel stop: The operator manually turns the handle to stop the motor.
Wiring Diagram:
Components:
1. Oil tank: Holds the oil that cools and insulates the starter.
2. Star Delta switch: Manually operated switch that changes the motor connection
from Star to Delta.
3. Contacts: Electrical contacts that connect and disconnect the motor.
4. Coils: Electromagnetic coils that control the flow of current.
5. Terminals: Connectors for the motor and power supply.
6. Mechanical linkages: Connect the Star Delta switch to the contacts.
Preventive Maintenance:
1. Regular inspection: Check for signs of wear, damage, or corrosion on the starter’s
exterior and interior components.
2. Oil level checks: Verify the oil level is at the recommended level. Top off with the
specified type of oil if necessary.
3. Contact maintenance: Clean and inspect contacts for wear or pitting. Replace if
necessary.
4. Coil maintenance: Check for signs of overheating, damage, or corrosion on the
coils.
5. Terminal maintenance: Verify terminals are clean and secure.
6. Mechanical linkage checks: Lubricate and inspect the mechanical linkages for
wear or damage.
7. Electrical testing: Perform electrical tests (e.g., insulation resistance, continuity) to
ensure the starter is functioning correctly.
8. Cleaning: Clean the starter’s exterior and interior with a soft brush and vacuum to
remove dust and debris.
9. Operational testing: Regularly test the starter’s operation to ensure it’s functioning
correctly.
Monthly Task :
1.Electrical testing: Perform electrical tests (e.g., insulation resistance, continuity) to
ensure the starter is functioning correctly.
2.Thermal monitoring: Check for signs of overheating or abnormal temperature
rises.
3.Moisture monitoring: Verify the starter is properly sealed and inspect for signs of
moisture ingress.
4. Control circuit checks: Inspect and test the control circuit components (e.g.,
timers, relays, sensors).
5. Power quality monitoring: Verify the starter is operating within specified power
quality parameters (e.g., voltage, current, harmonic distortion).
6. Load monitoring: Monitor the starter’s load to ensure it’s operating within
specified parameters (e.g., current, torque).
Annual Task:
1.Functionality testing: Test the starter’s functionality, including the manual
operation of the Star Delta switch.
2.Wiring and connections checks: Inspect and test the wiring and connections for
signs of wear, damage, or corrosion.
3.Grounding system checks: Verify the starter’s grounding system is properly
installed and functioning correctly.
4.Surge protection checks: Verify the starter is properly protected from voltage
surges and transients.
