LEARNING COMPETENCY
✓Describe the different types of plate
boundaries Learning Code: (S10 -Ia -j-
36.2))
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
In this lesson, you will learn about the
types of Divergent Plate Boundaries.
Specifically, you will:
1. Explain the processes that occur along transform –fault
boundaries.
2. Determine the effect of transform-fault boundary on the
earth’s crust.
REVIEW:
1. Which of the following best describes what happens at a
convergent boundary between an oceanic plate and a continental
plate?
A) The oceanic plate is pushed above the continental plate, forming
mountains.
B) The continental plate is subducted beneath the oceanic plate, forming a
trench.
C) The oceanic plate is subducted beneath the continental plate, leading to
volcanic activity.
D) Both plates move apart, forming a mid-ocean ridge.
REVIEW:
2. When illustrating a cross-sectional diagram of a
convergent boundary between two continental plates,
which feature is most likely to be shown?
A) A mid-ocean ridges
B) A deep ocean trenches
C) A chain of volcanic islands
D) A mountain ranges
REVIEW:
3. What is a common consequence when two
oceanic plates collide at a convergent boundary?
A) The formation of a volcanic island arc
B) The creation of a large mountain range
C) The development of a deep rift valley
D) The uplifting of large continental masses
REVIEW:
4. Which of the following geologic features is
NOT typically associated with a convergent
boundary?
A) Mountain ranges
B) Mid-ocean ridges
C) Volcanic arcs
D) Deep ocean trenches
REVIEW:
5. Which geologic features is most likely to
occur when two continental plates converge?
A) Formation of a volcanic island arc
B) Creation of a mid-ocean ridge
C) Formation of a large mountain range
D) Subduction of one plate beneath the other
REVIEW:
6. What occurs at a divergent boundary?
a) Plates move towards each other
b) Plates move away from each other
c) Plates slide past each other
d) Plates remain stationary
REVIEW:
7. Which process is most commonly associated
with divergent boundaries?
a) Mountain formation
b) Subduction
c) Sea-floor spreading
d) Earthquake activity without significant movement
REVIEW:
8. At which location would you most likely find a
divergent boundary?
a) The Himalayas
b) The Mid-Atlantic Ridge
c) The San Andreas Fault
d) The Andes Mountains
REVIEW:

as a result of divergent boundaries?
a) Volcanic islands
b) Deep ocean trenches
c) Rift valleys and mid-ocean ridges
d) Folded mountain ranges

away from a mid-ocean ridge?
a) It becomes thicker and denser
b) It becomes thinner and less dense
c) It remains the same thickness
d) It moves downward into a trench
TRANSFORM BOUNDARY
TRANSFORM BOUNDARY

1. The transform boundary occurs between plates

that are sliding by each other in opposite directions.
2. Earthquakes frequently occur on Transform Faults
boundary.
3. Transform faults are part of prominent linear
breaks in the sea floor known as Fracture zone
which include both the active transform faults as well
as their in active extensions into the plate interior.
TYPES OF TRANSFORM BOUNDARY
1. Ridge-Ridge Boundaries – A mid-
ocean ridge or mid-oceanic ridge is an
underwater mountain range, formed by
plate tectonics. This uplifting of the ocean
floor occurs when convection currents rise
in the mantle beneath the oceanic crust
and create magma where two tectonic
plates meet at a divergent boundary.
- also known as gravitational sliding or
sliding plate force is a proposed driving
force for plate motion in plate tectonics that
occurs at mid-ocean ridges as the result of
the rigid lithosphere sliding down the hot,
raised asthenosphere below mid-ocean
ridges.
TYPES OF TRANSFORM BOUNDARY

2. Trench-Trench Boundaries –
trenches are formed by a
subduction, a geophysical
processes in which two or more of
Earth’s tectonic plates converge
and the older, denser plate is
pushed beneath the lighter plate
and deep into the mantle, causing
the seafloor and outermost crust
(the lithosphere) to bend and form
a steep, V-shaped depression.
TYPES OF TRANSFORM BOUNDARY

3. Ridge-Trench Boundaries -
trench is a deep elongated cavity
bordering a continent or an island
arc; it forms when one tectonic
plate slides beneath another.
Ridge is underwater mountain
range that criss-crosses the
oceans and is formed by rising
magma in a zone where two
plates are moving apart.
