READING LIST

About the course:

This is an introductory course to the study of law at the University. It is


intended to assist a new student to the study of law get an idea on how
and what to read within the discipline, get an understanding of what the
law is, the phrases and terms used within the law, the different
classifications/divisions of the law, the laws that apply within Uganda’s
legal system, the courts in Uganda, their hierarchy and respective
powers.

Objective:

1. To give a general introductory guide concerning the law to a


beginning student.

2. To assist students appreciate the purpose of the law, and further


learn how and what to read to understand and apply the law.

3. To introduce the student to the courts of judicature in Uganda,


their hierarchy and respective powers.

Course outcome:

Upon successful completion, it is expected that a student should have the


ability;

(a) To apply themselves in the study of all other courses offered at the
law school with a clear understanding on where to find all relevant
materials required to successfully complete those other courses.

Mode instruction:
 At the commencement of the course, students are availed
with reading lists, which indicate the topics to be covered,
and the respective reading materials for the respective
topics. It is expected that the student uses this list in
preparation for each lecture.

 The students are introduced to each topic and guided on the


principles therein. Thereafter, students will be given different
possible scenarios and they will be required to make an
attempt at resolving the issues arising from such scenarios.

 Students are further encourage to also formulate their


problems for discussion during the lectures.

 A coursework will be administered during the coursework


week to be marked out of 30 marks.

 Further, an examination will be given at the end of the


semester to be marked out of 70 marks. This examination
will contain 06 questions out of which a student will only
attempt 04 questions, answers to which should be written
within 03 hours and 30 minutes. This examination shall be a
closed book, and no student will refer to any materials of
whatever nature during the examination
