What I Need To Know

Welcome to this module on measuring objects using
appropriate measuring tools and measuring units in g or kg.
Added objective is to estimate and measure mass using grams
and kilogram.

This module is designed to equip you, learners, with essential

knowledge, skills, and attitude on adding numbers. This module
is designed so you can pace yourself as you use them to
achieve the prescribed learning competencies. It also aims to
prepare you to be at the forefront of the fast-growing world of
industry, a quest for higher education and useful in your daily
living, so sit back and have fun.

Learning Objectives
● Measures objects using appropriate measuring tools and
measuring units in g or kg.
● Estimates and measures mass using grams or kilograms.

What I Know

Let us determine what you already know. Underline the correct

answer.

1. ( more than 1kilogram, less than 1 kilogram )

2. ( a kilogram, a gram )
3. ( 9 g. , 900 g. )

4. ½ kilograms ( 50g. , 500g. )

5. 2000g. ( 2g. , 2kg. )

What’s In
Put a on the object if it is light and X if it is heavy.

1.

2.

3.
What’s New
Look at these pictures of some familiar things. Their mass is
measured in grams.
A.

Here are other things that you normally see. Their mass is
measured in kilograms.
B.

1. What unit of mass is best to use in picture A? ___________

2. What unit of mass is best to use in picture B? ___________
3. What do you think is the mass of the strawberries? _______

What is It
Lesson 1: Measures objects using appropriate
measuring tools and measuring units in g. and kg.

There are different kinds of weighing scales. They are

used to measure the exact mass of things.

You can use grams and kilogram to indicate the

measurement of things.
Example:
1.Let us measure the mass of a dressed chicken.
The needle of the weighing
scale is pointing at 1 kilogram.
The mass of the dressed
chicken is 1 kilogram.

2. Let us measure the mass of the mangoes.

The needle of the weighing

scale is pointing at 400 grams.
The mass of the mangoes is
400 grams.

There are 1000 grams in

1 kilogram or 1kg. is equivalent to 1000 grams.
In measuring mass:
▪ Use gram in light objects

▪ Use kilogram in heavy objects

▪ The symbol for gram is g.

▪ The symbol for a kilogram is kg.

▪ One way of understanding a kilogram is to look at a weighing

scale.
Lesson 2: Estimates and Measures mass using
grams or kilograms.

It is important to know how to estimate mass, so we

can tell how much we have to pay for things that are sold in
kilogram.
We can estimate the mass of things. Estimate means
is a number close to the exact number. It may be a little
more or a little less than the exact number.
Example 1 paper clip is about 1 gram. 1000 paper clips=
1 kilogram.
Look at the set of pictures. Each group is about 1000 grams or
about 1 kilogram.

What’s More
Activity No. 1

A. Write the measurement on the blank using the appropriate units

of measurements.

1. ________ 2. ________
B. Underline the better estimate.

3. 4. 5.

25 kilograms 20 grams 50 kilograms

75 kilograms 175 grams 100 kilograms

Assessment No. 1
A. Change the following to kilograms or grams.

1. 3000 g. = __________ kg.

2. 1 kg. = __________ g.

3. 7000g. = __________ kg.

C. Circle the appropriate weight measure.

4. a. 35g. b. 35kg. c. 350g. d. 350kg.

5. a. 1 kg. b. 1 g. c. 100kg. d. 100 g
