(i)This question paper consists of 15 questions
All questions are compulsory.

Q. 1. The property to flow is unique to fluids. Which one of the following

statements is correct?
(A)Only gases behave like fluids.
(B) Gases and solids behave like fluids.
(C) Gases and liquids behave like fluids.
(D)Only liquids are fluids.

Q. 4. On converting 25°C, 38°C and 66°C to Kelvin scale, the correct

sequence of temperatures will be:
(A) 298 K, 311 K and 339 K
(B) 298 K, 300 K and 338 K
(C) 273 K, 278 K and 543 K
(D)298 K, 310 K and 338 K

Q. 5. Assertion: A gas exerts pressure on the walls of the container.

Reason: Rate of diffusion of gases is more than that of liquids.
(A) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the
correct explanation of assertion (A).
(B) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the
correct explanation of assertion (A).
(C) Assertion (A) is true but reason (R) is false.
(D) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true.

Q. 6. Give two reasons to justify—

(a) water at room temperature is a liquid.
(b) an iron almirah is a solid at room temperature.

Q. 7. Why is ice at 273 K more effective in cooling than water at the same
temperature?

Q. 8. What produces more severe burns, boiling water or steam?

Q. 9. Why does our palm feel cold when we put some acetone or petrol or
perfume on it?

Q.10. Give reasons for the following observation: The smell of hot sizzling
food reaches you several metres away, but to get the smell from cold food
you have to go close.

Q. 11. State four properties of liquids.

Q. 12. Illustrate three states of matter with a schematic diagram.

Q.13.(i) After winters, people pack off their woollens by keeping

naphthalene balls in them. With passage of time these balls become
smaller in size. Why does this happen ? What type of change is involved
during this process ?
(ii) How can you convert a saturated solution into an unsaturated
solution ?

Q.14. People of village use earthen pots to get cool water in summers.
Explain the reason that why water remains cool in earthen pots.

Q.15. Define latent heat of vaporisation.

ANSWER:

Ans.1. C Ans.2. D Ans.3. A Ans.4. A Ans.5. B

Ans.6.(a) Water persists as a liquid at room temperature since its melting point is
lower than room temperature and its boiling point (100⁰C) is higher.
Similarly,
(i). A fixed volume is occupied by a fixed mass of water.
(ii). At room temperature, water does not have a fixed shape and flows to fit the
container’s shape. As a result, water is a liquid at room temperature.

(b) Because it’s melting and boiling points are above room temperature, an iron
almirah is a solid at room temperature. In the same way,
(i) An iron almirah is rigid and has a predetermined shape.
(ii) Metals have a relatively high density. As a result, at room temperature, iron
almirah is a solid.

Ans.7. At 273 K, ice will absorb heat energy or latent heat from the medium to
overcome fusion and transform into water. As a result, ice has a greater cooling
impact than water at the same temperature since water does not absorb the
excess heat from the medium.

Ans.8. Steam produces severe burns. It is because it is an exothermic reaction

that releases a high amount of heat which it had consumed during vaporization.

Ans.9. Acetone, petrol, and perfume are volatile substances that evaporate when
they come in contact with air. Evaporation is facilitated as it uses energy from the
palm, hence leaving a cooling effect on our palms.

Ans.10. Particles in the air, if fuelled with higher temperatures, acquire high
kinetic energy, which aids them to move fast over a stretch. Hence, the smell of
hot sizzling food reaches a person even at a distance of several meters.

Ans.11. Properties of liquid state are:

(i) Liquids have definite volume
(ii) Liquids can flow.
(iii) Liquids are compressible.
(iv) They have less intermolecular force of attraction as compared to solids but
more intermolecular force of attraction as compared to gases.

Ans.12. The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas.

Ans.13. (i) Sublimation, naphthalene balls sublimate and become smaller in size.
It is a physical change.
(ii) By adding large quantities of the solvent into the solution.

Ans.14. There are pores in an earthen pot through which the liquid inside the
pot evaporates. This evaporation makes the water inside the pot cool. In this
way, water kept in an earthen pot becomes cool during summers.

Ans.15. The amount of heat energy required to change 1 kg of a liquid to gas at

atmospheric pressure at its boiling point is called latent heat of vaporisation.
