INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
This paper consists of two sections; A and B. It has six examination items.
Answer four examination items in all.
Section A has two compulsory items.
Section B has two parts; I and II. Answer one item from each part.
You may use diagrams where applicable to illustrate your answers.
Any additional item(s) answered will not be scored.
All answers must be written in the answer booklet(s) provided
SECTION A: Map and Photograph skills
Answer all items in this section.
MAP SKILLS

1. The people living in lukaya area always experience food shortages due to low food production output.
An investor has been identified to set up a large scale farm project to produce enough food in order to
control famine in the area. An area extending from Easting 720 to Easting 840 and Northing 860 to
Northing 980 has been identified as the possible area for the project. The investor has contacted you to
provide him with information on the nature of the relief, drainage, vegetation and settlement in the
area.

2. The photograph in fig.1 below is taken from one of the places in north eastern Uganda. Use it and

The government of Uganda through its plan to modernize agriculture wishes to establish a
demonstration farm in north eastern Uganda in order to improve food supply. The local
community in north eastern Uganda is of the view that the demonstration farm is established in
the area shown in the photograph. However the government seeks guidance about modern
farming methods that are effective. You are therefore required to give a descriptive advice to
the government as the plan continues.
Task

a) Draw a land scape sketch of the area to show features of geographical importance to the
farmers.

b) Prepare an advice note to the government to enable people of north eastern Uganda improve
food supply.

PART I

Item 3.
Study the text and fig. 3 provided and use them to answer this item.

The family of Mr. and Mrs. Kikagati has been living in Canada for the past 10 years. The family plans to
return to Africa and establish their home in any one of the relief regions where they can carry out
modern economic activities. However they have little knowledge about the geography of Africa due to
the fact that they have been actively engaging in activities in the foreign continent.

out modern economic activities

Item 4.

Your district has a number of physical features and one of which is a lake surrounded by a number of
highlands that stretch to the nearby districts. The government is encouraging all districts to use the
existing natural resources to improve the lives of the people. However, your local district has not been
able to use the lake and the surrounding highlands. You have been invited for a district council meeting
to sensitize the community leaders on how they can use the existing resources to improve lives of
people in their communities.

PART II

5. The population survey that was made in Uganda between 10th and 25th of May 2024 presented a report
that showed a rise in the number of people living in slums .the report further showed that the population
in such areas was largely composed of the young below 12 years of age. This worried the government due
to the hardships the people where facing and the likely dangers of the concern. The government seeks
advice on how best she can overcome such a situation.

Item 6.

Over the years, Uganda government has put in place several measures to increase the income from
exports. These include; setting up the Uganda Export Promotion Board, signing trade agreements with
other countries, construction of roads and processing exports to add value.

Despite all these efforts, the country’s balance of trade has remained unfavourable. Traders in your
community are interested in understanding how they can contribute towards improving this situation
but they lack the necessary information of how to do so.

(a) Using evidence from the graph only, explain the likely effects of this trend of trade on the
development of Uganda.

(b) Advise traders in your community on how they can contribute towards improving the country’s
balance of trade
