“Exploring Explicit Teaching Strategy“
LAC Session
APRIL 19, 2024 / 1:00 p.m.
Narrative Report:
“Good teaching is more a giving of right questions than a giving of
right answers.” Josef Albers. In education, the traditional approach often
focuses on providing students with answers to questions or problems.
However, Josef Albers suggests that effective teaching goes beyond
merely offering solutions. Instead, it involves guiding students to think
deeply, ask insightful questions, and develop their own understanding.
To effectively teach students and facilitate learning, teachers
gathered for a session regarding explicit teaching strategy. Dr. Sylvia G.
Isoreta enthusiastically started the session with a Makabayan song, prayer
and energizer thru video clips. Dr. Isoreta greeted and welcomed each
participant in the session held in Mrs. Pentinio’s room.
Dr. Sylvia G. Isoreta facilitated the discussions about explicit
teaching and commenced with a pre-test that consolidated the
participant’s prior knowledge about the topic. Explicit or direct teaching
instruction is an approach to teaching that helps all students, especially
those who learn and think differently. Teachers use explicit instruction to
teach concepts or skills in a very structured way. Explicit teaching can
simply be defined as clear, direct and structured.
Dr. Isoreta shared her expertise about explicit teaching as she
explained its components; I do, We Do, You Do. The first component is I
do. This is done when the teacher explain the lesson, and demonstrate
how the steps, or the process of their tasks are being done. Next is We Do.
Teachers on this component help the students by providing scaffolds such
as prompts r partially completed procedures. The last component, You Do,
provides students with an opportunity to test out their understanding in
order to obtain the highest level of mastery possible, with the goal of
consolidating their learning. On the other hand, this step also identifies
students who may be in need of some additional support before they
move on.
The discussion went well. Sample plans were shown to identify the
parts where the components are present. Dr. Isoreta presented video clips
of teaching demonstration which showed explicit teaching strategy. With
the help of Mrs. Shella Marie San Juan, Ambulong ES principal, the video

clips presented were thoroughly studied and explained. Teachers gave
their insights about the video and expounded their understanding on how
to use explicit teaching strategy.
A group task were given to be accomplished by Key Stage 1 and Key
Stage 2 teachers. Teachers were asked to make a brief lesson plan
showing the components of explicit teaching. Each group collaborated and
discussed the task given. Mrs. Diana Rose Mendoza, Grade 3 teacher and
Mrs. Irene De Leon, Grade 5 teacher presented their group work.
Comments and suggestions were provided for their presentation. An open
forum were conducted and concluded the session.
