SINGLULARITY FUNCTIONS/ INFLUENCE LINES/ 3-PINNED ARCHES


ASSIGNMENT # 2

Given Date: Thursday 28th March, 2024 Due Date: Thursday 11th April, 2024

Total: 40 Marks

Question 1 [Singularity Functions] (10 Marks)

Using singularity functions for the beam loaded, as shown in Figure Q1 below:
(a) Calculate the reactions (2 marks)
(b) Determine the position and amount of the maximum shear force and maximum positive and maximum
negative bending moment, (5 mark) and
(c) Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams for the structure. (3 marks)

Question 2 [Influence Lines] (15 Marks)

Figure Q2 shows two beams. ABC and CD connected by a frictionless hinge at C and supported as shown.
1. Sketch the influence lines for bending moment and shear force at section 3m from A giving critical
values and defining the sign convention used. (5 marks)
2. Determine the maximum sagging and hogging bending moments and the maximum negative and
positive shears at the section when the system is crossed by a uniformly distributed load of
intensity 12kN/m and 6m long. (10 marks)

Question 3 [3-Pinned Arches] (15 Marks)

A loaded parabolic arch ADCEB is shown in Figure Q3 together with all dimensions.
1. Determine the support reactions at the abutments A and B, (6 marks)
2. Bending Moments at D and E when the arch supports a horizontal, uniformly distributed load of intensity
20 kN/m and two point loads, (6 marks) and
3. Plot the Bending Moment Diagram (BMD) (3 marks)
