TUTORIAL 1– ANALYSIS OF ARCHES
CE4352-BRIDGE ENGINEERING
1) The three-hinged open-spandrel arch bridge shown in the figure below has a parabolic
shape and supports the uniform load. Show that the parabolic arch is subjected only to axial
compression at an intermediate point D along its axis. Assume the load is uniformly
transmitted to the arch ribs.
2) The three-hinged tied arch is subjected to the loading shown in the figure below. Determine
the force in members CH and CB. The dashed member GF of the truss is intended to carry
no force.

3) The tied three-hinged arch is subjected to the loading shown. Determine the components
of reaction at A and C and the tension in the cable.
4) Analyze a three-hinged arch of span 20m and a central rise of 4m. It is loaded by UDL of
50KN/m over its left half. Calculate maximum positive and negative moments if
(i) The arch is parabolic
(ii) The arch is circular

5) Obtain the internal force diagram (SFD and BMD ) for the arch in below figure.
6) The three-hinged tied arch is subjected to the loading shown in below figure. Determine
the force in members CH and CB. The dashed member GF of the truss is intended to carry
no force.

7) A two hinged circular arch of span 20 m and rise 4 m is loaded with a uniformly distributed
load of 100kN/m over the left half of the span and a concentrated load of 80kN at the
midpoint of the right half of the arch. Calculate the horizontal reaction and normal thrust
at a section just to the right of concentrated loads.
8) A two hinged parabolic arch of span 30m and rise 6m carries a uniformly distributed load
of 20kN/m covering a distance of 12m from left end. Find the horizontal thrust and the
reactions at the two supports. Also calculate the maximum hogging moment in the arch.
9) A parabolic Arch hinged at the ends has a span 30 m and rise 5m. A concentrated load of
12kN acts at 10m from the left hinge. Calculate the horizontal thrust and the reactions at
the hinges. Also calculate the maximum bending moment anywhere on the arch.
