ABSTRACT

The thing behind writing this paper is that teacher is the only profession that
determines the fate of the nation. This is because teachers are in charge of
educating and teaching the nation's children, changing behavior, shaping
character. A very fundamental task. The purpose of this paper is to discuss what
and how the role of teachers is very important in educating the nation's children.

The theoretical basis in this paper is refer to the opinion of Hamzah B Uno,
regarding the main duties and functions of the teacher as an educator, namely:
motivational, disciplined, reward. The research method used in this paper is to use
qualitative research methods with direct observation techniques in the form of
interviews.

In the discussion of this paper, it can be concluded that there are many roles

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of The Problem

The teacher as a model is a teacher as an example or role model for the

child in particular and society in general. Of course, because the model must
be a good one, all its behavior does not conflict with the norms and values
that apply in society. Any form of deviance will not occur if teachers, parents
and society are able to set a good example for the child, the potential to do
things that violate the norm, the rule will be even less.

The process that takes place in the classroom is not teaching but learning.
The consequence is that everything in the classroom is learning, the teacher is
not filling an empty bottle but invites to discover for himself with the
guidance of the teacher. In learning activities, the teacher always reflects on
what he has done in the learning process. If there are unsatisfactory learning
outcomes or classroom conditions and children that are not in accordance
with what is expected, the teacher can conduct class action research. This
research makes teachers to learn, learn theory and try to put it into practice to
improve children's learning outcomes.

The role of the teacher as a communicator of community development. A

teacher is expected to play an active role in development in all areas that are
being carried out. He can develop his abilities in the areas he masters.
Teachers can be agents of change in society. As an initiator or communicate
ideas for the development of society. Especially for teachers who serve in
remote areas, teachers are the only profession that is able to provide education
not only to children but also to the surrounding community.

Teacher as administrator. A teacher is not only an educator and teacher,

but also as an administrator in the field of education and learning. Therefore a
teacher is required to work administratively regularly. School administration
is the regulation and utilization of all school resources effectively and
efficiently in the implementation of education so that educational goals in
schools are optimally achieved.

Teachers should be loyal to the institution, nowadays many teachers are

reluctant to be placed in remote areas, it should not happen. Teacher as a
profession that emphasizes loyalty to the institution, loyal to the state. If he
were tasked with educating children in the far east of the country, he should
have complied because it was also in the interest of this country.

1
Those are the seven roles of teachers, of course, if all those roles and
duties are carried out whole heartedly and the responsibilities will be able to
provide meaningful change for children and generally the nation.

25 November is celebrated as "Teacher's Day" internationally, including in

Indonesia. The momentum of this warning should also be used to conduct
introspection. This is a momentum for teachers, unsung heroes to introspect
themselves about the role of teachers in educating the nation.

The teacher is the only decisive profession in changing the destiny of the
nation. This is because teachers are in charge of educating and teaching the
nation's children, changing behavior, shaping character. A very fundamental
task. If the Indonesian wants to improve the condition of the Indonesian in the
future, that hope is superimposed on teachers, the world of education.

It is the professional teachers who can educate the nation to change the
destiny of this nation. According to the law of teachers and lecturers there are
several requirements for a professional teacher, either qualifications, or
competencies. A professional teacher must have a minimum bachelor's
education qualification (S1). Meanwhile, in terms of competence,
professional teachers must have four competencies, namely: (1) paedagogic
competence, (2) social competence, (3) personal competence, and (4)
professional competence. Each of those competencies is also clearly
indicatorted.

Making teachers professional is the responsibility of the government

institutionally and the responsibility of the teacher concerned personally. The
government has made various efforts to do so. Through the addition of
education budgets, training for teachers, structuring the curriculum.
Including, the launching of character education nationwide. However, those
government efforts will never be enough. Teachers personally need to
supplement the government's efforts.

Teachers will be able to educate the nation, advance the development of

this nation are professional teachers who are able to carry out their duties.
Efforts to educate this nation will not succeed if teachers do not have sincerity
and idealism in serving, nor will they be able to improve the destiny of the
nation. Teachers who can educate the nation, change this nation are teachers
who are professional, sincere and idealistic in serving or carrying out their
roles.

Based on the discussion above, our reasons and opinions why we raised
this theme, because teacher is not only a role as a medium of transfer between
sources of knowledge to students. However, it also plays a role as giving

2
direction, building character or as a mentor, and as a motivator. According to
Prey Katz (Aini, 2012), describes the role of the teacher as a communicator, a
friend who can provide advice, motivator, as an inspiration and
encouragement, mentor in the development of attitudes and behavior and
values, people who master the material being taught. According to Hawardi
Nawawi. The teacher is a person who teaches or gives lessons in school
(class). More specifically, he said that teachers mean people who work in the
field of education and teaching who share responsibility in helping children
reach their respective maturity. That is, the teacher does not only give
material in front of the class, but must also be active and have a creative spirit
in directing student development.

Teacher as role model. Every student wants the teacher to be a good model
and example for them. Therefore, the attitudes and behavior of teachers or
figures in society must reflect the values and norms which is in accordance
with Pancasila. Teacher as a motivator. The teacher as a motivator must be
able to encourage and build students' enthusiasm to study hard. In the process
of giving motivation, the teacher can find out in advance the background that
happened to so that students can maximally provide motivation. The teacher
as a guide and evaluator. As a guide, the teacher accompanies and provide
direction to students related to growth and development in students both
includes aspects of cognitive, effective, and psychomotor as well as the
provision of academic, vocational and social living expenses nor spiritual.

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS

A. Understanding The Role of The Teacher

Role comes from the word "role" according to terminology role is "a
behavioral device that is expected to be possessed by people who are
domiciled in society". (1) The role in English is called "role", the definition of
which is "person‟n task or duty in undertaking". (2) It means: "the duty or
obligation of a person in an undertaking or occupation".1

The role according to Soejono Soekanto is a dynamic aspect of position

(status). If a person exercises rights and obligations in accordance with his
position then he performs a role. According to Dadi Permadi and Daeng
Arifin, "The role demands responsibility, and responsibility will be a burden
that must be carried by a person."

B. The Role of Teachers as Educators

Education is the process of changing the attitude of a person or group of

people in an effort to mature people through teaching and training efforts;
Educational processes, ways, deeds. An educator is an educational person.
Educating means transferring values to learners. Those values should be
embodied in everyday behavior.

Education is an educator's effort to lead students in general to achieve

their development towards physical and spiritual maturity, and guidance is an
educator's effort to lead students in a special sense such as providing
encouragement or motivation and overcoming the difficulties faced by
students.

According to Hamzah B Uno, the educational duties of teachers related

to their function as educators, are:2

1. Motivational

2. Discipline

Committees, (Bandung: PT. Sarana Panca Karya Nusa, 2007), p. 78

Efektif. (Jakarta: Bumi Aksara, 2009) p. 21

4
3. Reward

In relation to some of the functions that teachers have, there are several
main aspects that are basic skills and knowledge for teachers, namely:

1. The teacher must be able to understand his maturity. As an educator,

he must be able to set himself as an example. Exemplary in this case
does not mean that the teacher must be a special person. Teachers
must be ordinary, open and avoid all despicable acts and behaviors
that will bring down the dignity of being an educator.
2. The teacher must know himself his students. Not only does it
recognize its traits and needs in general as a category, it not only
knows the types of interests and abilities, as well as the ways and
styles of learning, but also knows specifically the traits,
talents/carriers, interests, needs, personalities and aspirations of each
of his students.
3. Teachers must have the ability to provide guidance. Teachers need to
have knowledge that allows them to establish the levels of
development of each of their students, both in emotional
development, special interests and skills, as well as in scholastic,
physical and social achievements.
4. Teachers must have a broad knowledge base about the objectives of
education in Indonesia which generally corresponds to the stages of
development. This knowledge as a foundation or gives meaning to
the direction of development of his proteges. The protege develops
and changes and is not only the origin of developing and changing,
but will develop according to the experience based on the interests
and needs he wants to achieve.
5. The teacher must have a round and new knowledge of the science he
teaches, the development of human culture that concerns science and
technology is now growing rapidly, thus bringing consequences in
various human lives themselves.

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODS

1. Types of Research
This research is a qualitative research. The qualitative approach is an
approach based on the reality of the field and what the respondent
experienced, finally looking for references to the theory. Other sources state
that a qualitative research approach is one that does not use a statistical basis
of work, but is based on qualitative evidence.
This type of research method is a descriptive method. The descriptive
method is a method of examining the status of a group of people, objects, a
set of conditions, a system of thought, or a class of events in the present. The
objective of this descriptive study is to make a systematic, factual and
accurate description, picture or painting regarding the facts, properties as well
as the relationships between the phenomena investigated.3

2. Data Sources
The source of data in this paper is:
1. Primary data are the teachers and students of Rahmatul Asri Senior High
School.
2. Secondary data is literature, journals and others research.
3. Documents, which are in the form of archives of official documents for
learning activities.

3. Data Collection Techniques

This study used three data collection techniques, namely; (1). Direct
observation (direct observation), interview (Interview), and documentation
study.
1. Direct Observation
This technique is used to obtain directly through the sense of sight
data related to the role of course the object of observation is the

teachers of Rahmatul Asri Senior High School as a place where the
author adds knowledge.
2. Interview
An interview is a dialogue conducted by the interviewer to obtain
information from the interviewer. Another source said the interview
was data collection by asking questions directly by the interviewer to
the respondent, and the respondent's answers were recorded or
recorded.
3. Documentation studies
This technique is used to obtain data in the form of recordings, such as
teacher data and student data.

CHAPTER IV
RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Based on the discussion above, in this study we conclude that there are several
important for a teacher in educating the nation's children, where this data is
obtained from literature reviews and the results of direct interviews from
teachers and students at Rahmatul Asri Senior High School, the place where
we study.

1. Literature
The following are the main points that we get in literature studies about the
role of teachers in educating the nation's children.
The duties of the teacher should be centered:4
a. Educating with a heavy point provides direction and motivation for
the achievement of goals both short-term and long-term;
b. Provide facilities for achieving goals through adequate learning
experiences;
c. Provides the development of personal aspects such as attitudes,
values, and self-adjustment. Thus the teacher is not only limited as a
conveyer of knowledge but more than that, he is responsible for the
overall development of the student's personality.

2. Interview
As for the interview results that support the fact about how important the
role of teachers is in educating the nation's children, we got from the
interview results with several teachers and students at Rahmatul Asri
Senior High School, as follows:
"Teachers play an important role in educating the nation's children.
Without a teacher, what will the children of this nation become." (M
Siing as a teacher) 5

Slameto, Belajar dan Faktor-Faktor yang Mempengaruhinya, (Jakarta: Rineka Cipta, 2003), p.
97
5
Result of an interview with the teacher concerned on 23 November 2022

8
"The teacher has many important roles in educating the nation's children.
Aside from being a teacher in the classroom, the teacher also acts as a
substitute for parents in the school environment because, at this time,
most parents do not have time to educate their children. Apart from
educating children, teachers also play an important role in the formation
of children's character. (S.A Sry Ayu Noviyanti as a geography teacher).6

"The teacher has several roles in educating children, including: 7

a. Teacher as a model, namely the teacher as an example for student.
b. Teachers as mentors, namely mentors who try to help student to be
able to discover their potential in what is their interest and talent.
c. Teachers not only transfer knowledge to students' brains but also
educate students' moral values so they don't become lost youths in
the future.
d. Teachers not only educate students to gain intellectual intelligence
but also emotional intelligence and spiritual intelligence
(Andi Iqbal Malik as headmaster)

"Teachers play a role in forming the manners and morals of students,

because at this time there have been many examples of people who
grew up with knowledge without manners, and most of them are
detrimental to fellow human beings. It is better to be civilized with a
little knowledge, than a lot of knowledge without being civilized."8
(Safitri as a student)

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTION

A. Conclusion

In teaching and learning activities, the teacher is the main key in playing an
important role. The teacher is a figure that is needed to encourage the success
of the nation's children. Not only to the nation's children. However, it also has
a big role for this nation. To carry out his profession, teachers need
knowledge and skills. He must also be able to increase his knowledge and
insight according to the civilization of the times. Like in the 21 century,
where teachers pay attention.

Important skills that must be mastered by future teachers in facing 21 century

education are digital age literacy, inventive thinking, effective
communication, and high productivity. That's why, teachers have an
important role in educating the nation is true, that's why as students we say a
lot of thanks to the teachers who have spent a lot of time to educating and
teaching us students without you so what will us become.

B. Suggestion

Of course, in writing this paper, there are many shortcomings that must be
corrected. But we have a suggestion that teachers be glorified, because they
have a noble duty in educating the nation's children. Given this era, many
teachers are criminalized by their own students because they are considered
rude in educating.
