1. Existing road info
1 km road off the R30 to Glen Agricultural College:
Traffic conditions : Heavy Traffic
Pavement condition: Surface is severely distressed
Road width : 6m
Road type : 2 Way 2 Lane Road

3. Design Proposal 1
Concrete interlocking block paved road 11.2
Due to high traffic volume , road width will be increased to 7.0 m,
each Lane having width of 3.5 m.
Shoulder width of 2.5 m will be constructed on both Lanes to
accommodate stopping vehicles during heavy traffic pick times
Existing vertical and horizontal alignments will be adopted as
they are.
For the safety of pedestrians traveling on the side of the road
a pedestrian sidewalk of 2.0 m wide will be catered for
on one side of the road.
To avoid flooding on the road , a lane slope of 2.5% is chosen ,
sloping in one direction to a drain on another side opposite to
sidewalk.

Asphalt paved road surface
Due to high traffic volume , road width will be increased to 7.0 m,
each Lane having width of 3.5 m.
Shoulder width of 2.5 m will be constructed on both Lanes to
accommodate stopping vehicles during heavy traffic pick times
Existing vertical and horizontal alignments will be adopted as

For the safety of pedestrians traveling on the side of the road
a pedestrian sidewalk of 1.5 m wide will be catered for
on both sides of the road. TRH 17
To avoid flooding on the road , a lane slope of 2% is chosen , 5.2
sloping in both directions to drains on both sides.
The existing layer works will be used , the extended portion layers
will correspond with the existing one. 5.3
Drain will be slope 20% , and 230 mm deep.
Top layer will be cement stabilize using sure road cement.
11.2
DESIGN CHOICE
Design proposal one is chosen, because the road surface will be paved using
concrete block units that will be laid by hand, thus making the project more
labour intensive.
DESIGN PROPOSAL 1 : CROSS-SECTION DRAWING
DESIGN PROPOSAL2 : CROSS-SECTION DRAWING
QUANTITY TAKE OFFS
1. 80 mm interlocking bricks
Size = 200x100x80mm
Road width = 14 m , Length = 1 km
Application area = 14*103 m2
Area of one brick = 200*100 *10-6 m2
Number of bricks required = (14*103)/( 200*100 *10-6 ) = 700 000 bricks
Number of bricks per m2 = 700 000/14000 = 50 bricks/m2
2. Sand
Depth = 20 mm = 0,02 m
Width = 14 m
Length = 1km = 1000 m
Sand required = 14*0,02*1000 = 280 m3
3. G4 , G5, G7
6 m of the road is already having the layers , only the asphalt will be scraped
off , and the t layer below it will be recompacted before the sand is spread
over.
Width = 14- 6 = 8 m
Depth = 150 mm = 0,15 m
Length = 1 km
Material needed = 1000*8*0,15 = 1200 m3 of G4, G5 , G7 and in-situ fill .
4. Kerbs
Only on the side with sidewalk .
1000x300x150 mm kerb will be used
Therefore, number of kerbs required is = 1000 kerbs ,
