Communication Systems

Course Code: EET-321

Credit Hours: 2
Pre-requisite: Signals and Systems
Objectives: This course familiarizes students with the basic concepts of
communication systems, and it serves as a foundation course for
subsequent courses in communication theory. The students in this course
will learn the core concepts of analog and digital modulation techniques
and the behavior of communication systems in the presence of noise.

Course Learning Upon successful completion of this course, students shall be able to:
Outcomes (CLOs):
CLO-1 (C3): Apply concepts of signals and systems to different
communication systems

CLO-2 (C4): Analyze different analog and digital transmission schemes

CLO-3 (C3): Develop amplitude modulation and frequency modulation
transmitters.
Course Outline:
1. Introduction to communication systems (analog vs digital,
noise, SNR, BW), Fourier Analysis properties, Signal
Transmission and Distortion
2. Amplitude Modulation and Demodulation (DSB, DSB-SC,
SSB, VSB, QAM)
3. Carrier Acquisition, Phase lock loop (PLL), Frequency Mixer,
Super-heterodyne AM receiver
4. Angle Modulation Schemes, Concept of instantaneous
frequency, generation of modulated signals, spectral analysis of
angle modulation schemes, generation of EM signals
(Armstrong method) Demodulation of angle modulation.
5. Introduction to Digital Communications: Sampling theory,
Formatting, Encoding, Waveform encoding (PCM), and Line
Coding.
6. Baseband Modulation: Binary Pulse Modulation, Binary signal
detection (Matched filter, Maximum likelihood detector,
optimum threshold), Probability of Error, optimizing error
performance, Error performance in binary signaling, ISI,
distortion, pulse shaping, Eye Diagram, Introduction to
Equalization.
7. Digital modulation schemes (ASK, FSK, PSK), M-aray PSK,
QPSK, Two-dimensional modulation (M-QAM).
