Implicit differentiation and related rates

Name……………………

(1) Differentiate the following with respect to 𝑥. You don’t need to rearrange your
answers.

(a) 𝑦 ! = 2𝑥 (b) 𝑦 + ln 𝑦 = 0 (c) 𝑦 = 𝑦! + 1 !

(d) 𝑥 + 𝑒! = 5 (e) cos 𝑥 + sin 𝑦 = 𝑥 (f) 𝑥! + 𝑦! = 1

(2) Differentiate the following with respect to 𝑥. Write your answer in the form
!"
!"
= 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦).

(a) 3𝑥 ! + 2𝑦 ! + 4𝑥𝑦 = 1

(b) 𝑥𝑒 !! = 𝑥

(3) The Folium of Descartes was proposed by Descartes as a challenge to Fermat to find
the gradient at a point. With the invention of calculus this becomes much easier.
The equation is given below, where a is a constant.

𝑥 ! + 𝑦 ! = 3𝑎𝑥𝑦
!"
(a) Find the gradient of the curve. Write your answer in the form !" = 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦).

(b) When 𝑎 = 1 show that the gradient is 0 when 𝑥 = ± 𝑦.

!
(ii) For the case when 𝑥 = 𝑦 show that there is a stationary point when 𝑥 = 4.

(4) For the graph:

𝑥 ! 𝑦 ! = sin (𝜋𝑦)

(a) Differentiate with respect to 𝑥. Write your answer in the form:

!"
!"
= 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦).

(b) Find all coordinates when the gradient is 0.

(5) Variables 𝑥 and 𝑦 are connected by the equation:

𝑦 = (3𝑥 + 4)!

Given that 𝑥 is increasing at a rate of 5m/s, find the rate of increase of 𝑦 when 𝑥 = 2.

(6) The surface area of a spherical balloon is increasing at a rate of 20cm2/s. When the
radius is 5 cm find the rate of increase in the radius.

(7) A 20 metre long ladder leans against a wall. It begins to slip down the wall at a rate of
0.2 m/s.

Find the rate of change of the angle ABC when the top of the ladder is 5m above C.
