1. Never forget focal points in face painting!

What exactly is a focal point, you ask?

Well, it's a special point on the face that naturally catches our attention and holds
significance. These focal points are like landmarks on the face; they're the areas our
eyes are naturally drawn to without even realizing it.

The purpose of these focal points is to help us achieve balance and harmony in our
face paintings. They serve as a connection between the various elements of a design.
By understanding where these points are and how to utilize them, we can greatly
enhance the quality of our work. So, mastering the art of using focal points is key to
improving our face painting skills.

2. Mermaid Princess Mask.

● To achieve beautiful white drops, you need to obtain a creamy consistency of

the paint, so you will obtain an opaque and intense white! Do you get the same
result as me? Yes? Perfect! No — still activate the paint until you get a bubble
of cream. You'll get there, take your time!
● Look closely at the direction of each drop and arabesque in the photo, can you
see the focal points used? Yes? So, name them out loud and trace their
connection. It’s a memo- technical way to get used to using focal points. It
creates successful and thoughtful face painting!

4. Cute Mermaid Mask.

● To create a nice outline, I advise you to take a round brush of size 0 or 1. The
finer you take a brush, the more you will have to control the pressure of your
hand on the brush. Which leaves you no choice but to apply yourself and
concentrate! If you make irregular lines, this will allow you to correct yourself
and relieve your pressure. This is a great exercise to do!
● Of course, you can decide to make a contour line or not! Just the visual result
will not be the same. Also a piece of advice for a successful outline: do not cut
out all the drops or arabesques entirely, this risks making the design heavier or
making stops too marked. Stop your line halfway through the drop and stay well
outside of it so as not to change its shape.

The result is much softer and pastel. The result is much more defined. The
The mermaid is more highlighted. mermaid and the drop mask form more
of a whole.

Ocean Tiger

Step 1: Create the outer shape of the tiger with a #2 round brush loaded with the
white color.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 27
Step 2: Use a blue and white one-stroke of any kind with a half-inch angle brush to fill
it up (leaving only the muzzle area clean of color).

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 28
Step 3: Use white face paint, I used DFX, to fill in the area of the muzzle.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 29
Step 4: Fill in some teal tiger lines to get ocean depth and texture.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 30
Step 5: Use a #3 round brush loaded with a dark teal to outline the muzzle. Paint the
nose and add some tiger lines within for more texture.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 31
Step 6: Use a Filbert brush loaded with almost dry white paint and in a tapping motion
tap and dab with the tip of the brush on the upper side of the wave. Do the same in
the inner waves following the tiger lines creating the foam of the waves.

Sunset Ocean Butterfly

Step 1: We will use a rainbow cake that has colors like the sunset and load the color
well on a petal sponge, then we will create the upper pair of wings.

Step 2: Use a half-inch angle brush loaded with light blue and purple (the extremes in
the rainbow cake) and outline the butterfly using the flat part of the brush.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 34
Step 3: Use the tip of the brush to draw lines from the edges of the butterfly to the
starting point of the eyebrow and also to the corner of the eye.

Step 4: Use a ¾ inch angle brush to create the lower wing in 2 graduated strokes.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 35
Step 5: Using a Filbert brush, apply a white paint that is almost dry and slightly sticky.
Pat on the lower pair of wings, on the inner layer.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 36
Step 6: Using a half-inch flat brush loaded with yellow and orange paint, create a
semi-circle on the bridge of the nose that will look like the setting sun. With a half-inch
angle brush loaded with light blue and white, we will create the continuation of the
butterfly's body like an ocean.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 37
Step 7: With a liner brush loaded with black paint, we will add a silhouette of a boat,
palm trees, and seagulls.

Coral Reef Eye Design

Step 1: Using a petal sponge and a rainbow cake with blue and purple colors, apply
on the eyelid area (I think that metallic colors would even be nicer).

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 40
Step 2: With a ¾ inch angle brush loaded with a one-stroke in the shades of purple,
pink, and white, create a roll in the same technique that we used to create a rosebud
(first a U and then an N). I create several rolls that together look like a cluster of
corals.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 41
Step 3: Create another cluster of corals with a different one-stroke, but this time use a
half-inch angled brush to shorten their size.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 42
Step 4: Draw a shell and seaweed.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

Ocean Flower Wave

Step 1: Using a sponge, apply a rainbow on the eyelid area using soft colors of blues
and light purples (you can also use metallic shimmer colors, it will be beautiful).

Step 2: With a half-inch angle brush we will paint a wave shape, this will help us
maintain symmetry and also let our flower design look like a wave.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 45
Step 3: First we will start with the main flowers and place them symmetrically on both
sides of the face. We will start with the outer leaves and let them dry and return to
create the inner petals with an emphasis on renewing the white color at the end of the
brush.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 46
Step 4: We will add flowers to the entire length of the wave, we will try to work
symmetrically.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 47
Step 5: We will use a flower brush to create small flowers using the technique of
double loading, which will fill the areas and also help us finish the wave on both sides
of the design.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 48
Step 6: My favorite part (-; is adding lots of dots in different sizes and spreading them
around wherever we need to hide some imperfections.

Materials used:

● Flower Face Painting Brush of any kind

● Fusion Body Art | Leanne's Happy Pixie Petal Palette Refill b

● Anna Wistrich premium line rose

● Anna Wistrich ½ premium leaf

● 3/4 Anna Wistrich 2 premium line

May 16-19, 2024 49
Graffiti Splash

Step 1: Using a Filbert brush, write a word. You should start small because the design
will grow as we progress with the design. Place the word above the eyebrow in a
semicircle.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 50
Step 2: With a Filbert brush we will add the color purple to create a colored gradation
of the word. With a round brush, we will add a drop of color at the bottom of the word
to create a dripping effect.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 51
Step 3: Create the shape of a wave with a half-inch angle brush around the eyes
(partial number 8).

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 52
Step 4: Outline the word with a #2 round brush loaded with black paint, including the
inner spaces of the letters.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 53
Step 5: Using a Filbert brush, apply an almost dry/sticky white color to the wave and
create the foam.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 54
Step 6: Use a #2 round brush to outline the word in neon pink.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 55
Step 7: We will outline our word with a #3 round brush, loaded with a dark blue color.
We will outline it again with light blue and then again we will outline it with a white
color and create a splash shape around the word.

"5 Bol Bo Design t Blow Your Min "

We all know there is no such thing as

boy and girl designs as all kids should
have the freedom to choose what they
want to be. That said there are
certainly designs that tend to be more
popular with the boys.

One way to create more impactful

designs and toughen them up is to
use a sharper line and more edges in
your linework. In these few examples,
we can see the differences in attitude
when using a rounder line vs sharper
edges and angles.

We can take any design and give it

more edginess by using linework to our advantage. Reversely we can make a
design less scary and more cute and friendly by using rounder, softer linework.

When painting eyes the pupil can make a big difference. A large pupil will make for a
friendlier look than a small pupil, as seen in the two snakes. I will often omit the pupil
altogether as in the dragon in the lower right corner. The lack of a pupil gives this
dragon an extra menacing feel.

Non-digital visual artists typically use the RYB color wheel that has Red, Yellow, and
Blue as its primary colors. The primary colors are the colors that cannot be created by
mixing other colors together.

Color harmonies are combinations of colors that are pleasing to the eye. We can use
color theory and the color wheel to help us choose color combinations that work well
together.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 68
Examples of color harmonies

Monochromatic: Shades, tones, and

tints of one base color. Provides a
subtle and conservative color
combination. This is a versatile color
combination that is easy to apply to
design projects for a harmonious look.

Complimentary: The design is

created using colors opposite each
other on the color wheel, together with
shades and tints of the two hues. This
combination provides a high contrast
and high impact color combination –
together, these colors will appear
brighter and more prominent.

Analogous: The design is created using 3 adjacent colors on the color wheel
(sometimes it can include 4-5 colors but no more than 2 primary colors)

Split complementary: Color composition consists of one primary hue accented with
two colors adjacent to its complimentary color.

Primary Color Green – Accents Red/Orange and Red/Violet (Magenta).

Welcome to my class!

I chose these designs because I want you, the viewer, to be able to create them
quickly and easily. To ultimately be able to incorporate them as one of your designs
on your very own menu. Extremely elaborate designs are amazing, but sometimes
they cannot be a part of a birthday party or corporate event if they take too long to
create. Every single one of these designs is created to be painted elaborately or much
faster, by removing a few steps. Below are descriptions of each design.

Flamingo design

This flamingo design is very popular amongst girls at my gigs. I have it as part of my
menu list. It is very easy to master since it has the same wings you would use on a
butterfly design. Skip painting a wing for a faster flamingo. I hope you enjoy painting
it!

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

Materials used:

● FAB black and white

● EZStrokes’ Flamingo pink
● Your favorite rainbow one stroke
● ¾-inch flat brush
● Blazinbrushes: Flora flat 6 and Filbert XL
● Blending brush

Step by step:

Step1: Begin by painting the flamingo wings with your ¾-inch flat brush. Begin at an
angle and continue around the eyebrow area until the wing is complete. It will look like
top butterfly wings.

Step 2: Grab your favorite rainbow one-stroke and paint a rainbow in between the
wings, just like the picture shown above.

Step 3: In the center of the design and under the rainbow, you will paint the
flamingo’s face and long neck. After you paint the silhouette, add shadows with the
flamingo pink one-stroke.

Step 4: Grab your flora flat or favorite petal brush to create the flowers around the
design, as shown in the image. Then add leaves, swirls, and teardrops around the
design.

Step 5: Add the glitter in the middle of the flowers and cheekbones.

Rattlesnake design

Boys AND Girls love this rattlesnake design. Paint it in any color! Girls have asked for
purple or pink rattlesnakes, and they turn out great. Make a faster snake by skipping
the rattle and the yellow belly. The shape of the face will determine how big your
snake will be. Enjoy!

Materials used:

● FAB Black and White & your favorite Red

● EZStrokes’ Mermaid Palette’s green one-stroke
● EZStrokes’ Pineapple Yellow
● Blazinbrushes: 5/8-inch long angled & #2 Filbert XL
● Animal print stencil
● Ultra point #2 brush

Step by step:

Step 1: Begin by painting the center of the snake as shown in the image with a long
angled 5/8-inch brush. Then paint the head and tail on each cheek. Make sure the
darkest color is at the bottom of your design to resemble shadows.

Step 2: Using your favorite animal print stencil along with a blending brush or dauber,
apply a dark red or your favorite dark color on the top areas of the snake, as shown in
the image.

Step 3: (Optional) With the #2 Filbert XL Blazinbrush, apply EZStroke’s pineapple

yellow at the bottom of the snake to resemble the snake’s belly.

Step 4: Paint the rattle with a combination of white and teal.

Step 5: Outline the snake with your ultra point #2 and the color black. Paint the eye in
yellow, then outline as well. Paint the tongue in red, outline, then paint the fangs in
white.

Peacock design

I have been painting this peacock for many years and it never leaves my menu list,
because it’s different and so cute! Like the flamingo design, the peacock also uses the
same wings as a butterfly. You can also save time by only painting it with one wing.

Materials used:

● FAB Black and White

● EZStrokes’ Mermaid Palette’s teal and purple one strokes
● Any neon orange for the beak and any neon pink for the final details
● Shimmer teal and purple for the eyelids
● Blazinbrushes: 5/8-inch long angled
● ¾” Flat brush
● Blending makeup brush
● Ultra point #2 brush
● Gleam Blazin Unicorn Glitter

Step by step:

Step 1: Begin by painting the peacock’s head and neck with a 5/8-inch long angled
Blazinbrush and the purple one-stroke on your EZStrokes Mermaid Palette.

Step 2: Paint butterfly-style wings over the eyebrow area with the same purple
one-stroke and a ¾-inch flat brush.

Step 3: Apply shimmer purple and teal to eyelids with a blending brush.

Step 4: With the teal one stroke and a 5/8-inch long angled brush, paint on top of the
peacock’s head, under the wings, and other details as shown in the image. Paint the
peacock’s beak with neon orange.

Step 5: Paint eyes as shown in the video with teal. Outline with black then add hot
pint details around the design.

Step 6: Add Gleam blazing unicorn glitter.

Fox design

This is a new and fast way to paint a cute fox smelling flowers. I have recently added
it to my menu, and it’s become very popular. A great alternative to a full-face fox
design. Enjoy!

Materials used:

● FAB Black and White

● EZStrokes’ Mermaid Palette’s orange one stroke
● Neon pink, yellow, and navy blue
● EZStrokes’ Flamingo Pink
● Blending makeup brush
● Shimmer pink and purple for the eyelids
● Blazinbrushes: 5/8-inch long angled & flora flat 6
● Ultra point #2 brush

Step by step:

Step 1: With EZStrokes Pumpkin orange paint part of the fox’s face and tail. Then
with white paint the eye area and tip of the fox’s tail. Add a shadow effect by outlining
white areas with EZStrokes Unicorn white.

Step 2: With EZStrokes Flamingo pink and a flora flat 6 paint the inside of the fox’s
ears.

Step 3: With the flora flat 6 Blazinbrush double-dip the brush with first white, then hot
pink and navy blue, then apply the petals around the face as shown in the image.
Then add small leaves in green with the same or a smaller flora flat.

Step 4: Use shimmer pink and purple to apply eye shadow on eyelids with a blending
brush.

Step 5: Outline lightly and paint the fox's closed eyes and nose. Add swirls,
teardrops, and yellow dots in the middle of each flower.

Mermaid Mask Design

Step 1: Load a wet sponge with Fusion Neon Orange and put it in the middle of the
nose and on the sides of the eyes. With the opposite side of the sponge apply Tag
Neon Magenta to the eyelids and blend into the orange areas.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 92
Step 2: With Fusion Berry Pretty one-stroke cake load up a 5/8 inch Enchanted angle
brush with the dark color on the tip. Then starting from the center of the forehead
apply u-shaped strokes to create fins. Do this same technique on the side of the face
by the eyes.

Step 3: Load a finger dauber with Tag White making sure it is on the dry side and
using a stencil add a texture over the eye sockets.

Step 4: Load up a #3 round Enchanted brush in Tag White to create small circles and
flick the brush out to create a thin teardrop shape on each of the tips of the fins.

Step 5: Load up a #3 brush and use it to create teardrop shapes, starting with the
tear duct and flicking to blend into the stencil design on the eyelids. Add teardrops on
the side of the eyes, by the side eye fins. You can also do a center pearl with
teardrops coming off it to create a shell shape.

Step 6: Add bling and glitter to the design if you wish. My favorite is Gleam glitter
because I can put it right over my painted design

Otter Mask Design

Step 1: Take Tag Light Brown and add some white to create a light tan. Load up a #3
brush and create a football-shaped head and a jelly bean-shaped body connecting to
both corners of the eye.

Step 2: Load up a damp sponge with Tag Pearl Teal to create patches of water
around the otter.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 94
Step 3: Using the darker part of the Tag Brown split-cake load a #3 brush to make the
top of the head, the arms, the leg, and the tail.

Step 4: Using Fusion Yellow load a #3 brush and create a line for your kelp strands.
Once those are drawn create balls with stalks for the kelp leaves. Use Madelyn Greco
UV Purple to draw a ball in between the hands and make spikes to create a sea
urchin. Load Tag White into Light Brown to make a light tan and create an
upside-down jelly bean to make a muzzle for the otter.

Step 5: Outline the otter, then make the eyes and nose/mouth with a #3 brush, loaded
with Tag Black.

Step 6: Using a ½ inch Enchanted angle brush load up Winter Leaf Green from the
Flower Bouquet Kraze FX Palette by Linnea Novak and create kelp leaves. Load a #3
brush with Tag White, add highlights to the eyes, nose, and urchin, then create
bubbles. Add glitter if wanted.

Seas Turtle Eye Design

Step 1: Load up a 1-inch angle brush with Winter Leaf one-stroke from Kraze FX
Flower Bouquet Palette. Create the head higher up and centered by the forehead.
Add the neck, then create the turtle shell over the eyebrow and connect it to the
corner of the eye.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 96
Step 2: Load up an angle brush again and create the fins of the turtle. Then using a
#3 brush load up brown paint and create the underpart of the turtle's belly. Add eyes
on the turtle’s head.

Step 3: Load a 1/2-inch angle brush in Ziva Blue and add chunks of blue around the
turtle’s body to create water.

Step 4: Outline the turtle in Tag Black, adding a pattern to the shell. Then do rough
lines around the fins since fins are naturally lumpy. Add pupils to the eyes and draw
the mouth. Take a 1/2-inch angle brush, load with Bluebonnet one-stroke cake, and
line the edge of the turtle shell.

Step 5: Using a #3 Enchanted Liner brush load with Fusion Yellow and add
rough-shaped dots and shapes to the turtle’s fins and top of the head. Take yellow
and add a spiral shape to match the shapes inside of the turtle’s shell. Add Tag Neon
Magenta into the mouth for the tongue.

Step 6: Load up a #3 brush with Tag White and add highlights to the eyes and
tongue. Then add round bubbles and dots around the turtle's body.

Octopus/ Kraken Design

Step 1: Load up a 1/2-inch Enchanted angle brush with Autumn Leaf one-stroke cake
from the Kraze FX Flower Bouquet Palette. Create a swoop with a rounded shape to
create the eye, then take the brush and make an oval shape to create the head.

Step 2: Load up 1/2-inch angle brush in the Autumn Leaf and create tentacles around
the eyes. Add them in varying sizes and blend them into the center of the octopus.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 98
Make sure not to make the tentacles too big to leave room for the bottom of the
tentacles and suckers.

Step 3: With a #3 Enchanted brush load with Fusion Yellow paint and add the
undersides to the edges of the tentacles, making sure to go thinner near the tip of the
tentacle. Add dots and lightly touch with a finger to blend in and texture the head.

Step 4: Load up a #3 brush with Fusion Yellow add Tag White to create a lighter
yellow. Gently press the tip to create oval shape suckers on all the yellow parts of
tentacles, making them smaller as they go to the tips.

Step 5: Load a #3 with Tag Black. Then outline the eye, add a pupil, and add black to
certain areas on the head and on tentacles. Don’t outline the whole body.

Angler Fish Design

Step 1: Load a #3 brush with Tag Pearl Teal and do a long teardrop to create the top
lip of the fish. Then, do a swoop up and create a hump for the large eyeball. Add a
triangle on the back for the back end of the fish.

Step 2: Load a #3 brush with Tag Neon Magenta and create a large eyeball and add
a pink tongue in the corner of the mouth. While wet add paradise red and blend into
the tongue and eye.

Step 3: Load a 1/2-inch angle brush with Kraze FX 25 gm Glow one-stroke cake, be
sure it is neon so it glows under UV light! Create a jawline and create u-shaped fins.
Make sure they have sharp points to make them more scary. Load a #3 brush with UV
Neon Magenta and create a belly and side.

Step 4: Load a #3 brush in Tag Pearl Teal, fill in the body, and add bubbles around
the fish. Step 5: Load a #3 brush and outline the fish and add shadows under the top
lip and pupil.

Step 6: Using Superstar Peacock load a #3 brush and do a teardrop where you press
and flick out the brush on each section of the fin to create spines. Add some shadow
under and around the eye. Add an angler rod on top of the fish head.

Step 7: Load a #3 brush with Tag White and add an angler light. Highlight the eye and
around the bubbles. Press and pull outwards making tiny teardrops inside the fish’s
mouth to create teeth.

Step 8: Load a #3 brush with Fusion Yellow and add around the angler fish light.
Create highlights on the fish’s face and eye, then add dots along the side of the fish.

Shark Design

Important focal points for the Shark Design

For a balanced design with a nice flow, these

focal points are important:

1. Central Forehead FP, where the head

of the shark is placed.
2. FPs in the middle of the temple area.
The white teardrops are pointing to the left FP
and the shark’s body is going through the right
FP.
3. Cheekbone FP. The tail of the shark is
on this FP.

Tip: I use different brush sets to paint with black, white and colours. This way, I keep
my colors crisp.

Flow of the Shark Design

The shape of the shark’s body and the

teardrops on the left are on a rounded
flow.

The size of the fish is going from big to

small and contributes to this movement.

The teardrops have the same invisible

origin point.

Tip: The Filbert brush is great for

painting rounded shapes

Hungry Tropical Fish

Flow of the Tropical Fish design

This design has a rounded flow between the Central Forehead FP (1) and the Chin
FP (2). The longer part of the tail is slightly rounded to point in this direction.

Tip: When the child blinks, the fish starts to chomp.

Doesn't it remind you vaguely of someone?

Happy Crab

Flow of the Crab Design

The crab is placed slightly above the eyebrows to have enough space for its legs. If
you trace a 45 angle from the inner corner of the eyes, you can see that the legs get
longer at the back. Don’t forget to leave enough space above the shell to stick googly
eyes (or paint them if you prefer). Also, leave enough space between the claws.

Optional steps: No need to outline the googly eyes, if you’re in a hurry.

Tip: Googly eyes have various colors and sizes, they even have eyelashes.

Pirate’s Skull

Here is a picture of a real skull to help you with the drawing. My skull was intended to
look more like a cartoon character, so it’s not 100% realistic of course.

Flow of the Pirate Design

The lower jaw of the skull is at the height

of the mouth and it has a L-shape.

The folds are all pointing in the same

direction and they are equidistant from
each other

Tips:

This design can bring a lot of fun when

the child moves his/her face.

To go faster replace the golden tooth with

a regular one and don’t paint the earring.

are placed at the focal point of
the cheekbone (photo with eye
open).

The two calla lilies above the eye

point towards the inner eye focus
and follow the 45 degree angle
(photo with eyes closed).

For an extra subtle highlight, I

used a stencil with white metallic.

Elements go from large to small

to help with flow.

Blue Rose desing

The large rose is placed at the central focal point

and all the leaves wrap around the rose in the
shape of a fan.

The ‘swooshes’ point to the top focal point.

Roses under the eye are placed on the outer

focal point of the eye.

I used analogous color theory in my design for a

calm and balanced result. I used a white metallic
stencil detail to lighten the dark colors on the
eyes and tie the design together.

in this case.

The flower on the lower wing is
placed on the outer focal point of
the eye. The flowers on the upper
wing respect the shape of the

accordingly.

The upper wing is larger than the

lower wing and the lower wing
does not go lower than the nose.
The upper wing goes from wide
to narrow, stopping at the brow
bone and then wrapping around
the eye and ending at the outer
focal point of the eye.

Structure shape of the butterfly:

The basic butterfly shape consists of two main structures, one above and one under
the eye, which are divided into three smaller sections each. The upper wing should be
at least double the size of the lower one. The structure of each wing is built up using
the main focal points of the face, from the eye corners, through the eyebrows, to the
connection points between the nostrils and the middle of the ears.

Butterfly wings flow:

Once you’ve learned how to build the basic butterfly shape, you can play with your
flow and find many different combinations for your wing sections. You can use
whatever technique you prefer, whether it’s a teardrop or a one stroke.

The structure remains the same. When you change the flow, you change the style
and the feeling it gives to the observer. A more pointy, sharp flow gives a completely
different sense than a curly, round one.

Play with these kinds of variations to create different designs based on the type of
person you’re painting, or on the specific kind of butterfly people request.

Here are some of my exercise examples you can practice with.

Don’t worry about trying new things, there’s not just one correct way to build up your
butterflies. It’s always up to you, in order to find your own personal style!

Decor elements and color combinations:

Fairy designs combine butterfly theory with ornamental elements which should give a
sense of a flowy, magical, natural vibe. When you need to build up a character design
you need to figure out which are its main features that allow people to recognize
immediately.

You can reach this skill by starting to analyze how colors and the composition of the
overall elements can affect the general sense people feel while watching you paint. If
you combine the wrong colors, or if you don’t play with decor variations and details,
you could create something which is not recognizable at first sight.

Here you can see some examples of central decor compositions you can add to your
fairy masks. Your teardrops should have some kind of leafy, flowery wave, as fairies
are connected to the natural elements.

Play with curves and different line figures such as wiggly petals or pointed leaf-like
shapes. Use and combine swirls, spirals, height variations, doubled lines, and dots.
Try to create a magical, woodsy atmosphere.

The same goes for side eye compositions and general color shades.

Main features of fairy designs:

As we saw before, other than wings, ornamental decors, and color combinations, the
main classic features of fairy masks are the natural elements. Flowers, leaves,
branches, tiny mushrooms, single petals, and everything that can be linked to the
forest, the woods, and wild nature places in general.

The more you diversify, the better you get. I suggest you practice different elements,
and also different kinds and variations of the same subject. There’s no such as one
kind of flower, or one kind of leaf. There’s an infinite variety you can play with.

You can also change the techniques, using just one, two, or three in the same design;
combining for example double dip, one stroke, and filbert teardrops flowers! Here
below you have an example of a simple but effective fairy design you can practice on
paper before, and then on faces.

‘Wow-Factor’ Key Elements

Sponging:

● Good loading (enough to last a full design, use

edges and tips of sponge)
● Good application (rapid dabbing, moving sponge
position)
● Face coverage (large amount in a short time,
minimise sponge changes, use the same color on
multiple areas)
● Shapes/proportions to guide design (pinching
+ manipulating sponge, intentional application)

Paint:

● Neons/UV paint (vibrance, both alone and within

non-neon cakes, effective directly next to white)
● White factor (adds brightness to sponging and
one-strokes, highlights, pre-loading white onto
petal sponge tip)
● One-stokes with contrast (from light to dark in
close proximity)
● Dark pigments (solid colours for linework and
double-dipped petals)

One-strokes:

● Clean loading (keeping colors separated,

preloading white before loading rainbows)
● Placement (leave blank areas for one stroke,
minimise muddying of colour on background,
pairing heel of brush colour with butterfly outer
edge sponging)
● Contrast (highest contrast on outer edges of
design)
● Minimise brush changes (using the same colour on multiple areas)

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 168
Colour Selection:

● Contrast (warm vs cool, light vs dark)

● Colour themes and pairing (2-3 main colours in
design, sequential on colour spectrum aka
analogous vs contrast aka complementary)

Highlights/Details:

● Intentional (is this adding something to the design?)

● Colour (white/pastel/bright colours)
● Positioning (overlay onto darker colour
background, maximum contrast, attention to focal
points)
● Effective dots (alternative to linework/teardrops,
varying size/number, thickened paint consistency,
organic appearance)
● Lipstick/eye shadow
● Glitter

Focal Points:

● Feature elements (flowers, gemstones, stencils)

● Flow (connecting elements between focal points)

Photography:

● Lighting (position near a light source, natural

light vs studio)
● Camera quality

"Beauti Bell Paintin : Breathin color int new lif "

“Take care of the PLANET as you care for a new LIFE.”

Hi painters, I propose here a Belly Painting centered on love for our poor planet. I
thought of a child holding a ball which symbolizes the planet, surrounded by all the
elements of nature such as water, earth, air, fauna, and flora.

In the photo: Haley and her first daughter Emily.

● cold colors like light/dark green,
light/dark blue, aqua marine.
● skin tones (at least 4 shades
from almond to dark brown)

The sketch

Making the preparatory sketch is not necessary if you have practice, however, it can
be useful to know exactly where to place the elements you decide on together with
the mom.

Drawing on paper first helps the hand to memorize the movements that you will then
have to do on the belly. Always remember that drawing on flat paper is different from
a round belly.

Main steps:

First of all, I recommend designing the drawing while the mom is standing otherwise
the proportions will not be correct.

Place the mother’s hands under the belly, as you see in the photo, to understand the
area you have available.

You can design by free hand, use stencils or ectographic charts for tattoos.

Tips, Tricks & Advice:

● STYLE: The main difference between the cartoon and the realistic style is the
black or white border that outlines the object. The illustrative style is a mix
between the two.
● SHADES: When you are blending try to keep the brush dry enough. As you can
see in the video, I often use my finger or brush handle directly to blend. If the
brush is too wet the color doesn’t blend well a stain is created and the
underlying color is removed.
● COLORS: The colors of the Superstar brand require little water so, sometimes,
you do not even need to spray the water on the color.
● LIGHTS AND SHADOWS: As a general rule I suggest predicting that the light
comes from above to create the shadow under the objects. Alternatively, the
light is expected to come from the left to the top and consequently, the shadow
will be painted at the bottom right.

Thank you and let’s keep on painting!!

Myrthe Heydenrijk
"Bod Paintin 101: Everythin yo nee t know t creat
impact bod design "

Introduction:

Hey there, I'm Myrthe Heydenrijk, a seasoned special

effects makeup artist and body painter hailing from
Wellington, New Zealand. With a family deeply rooted in
the art of body painting, I'm excited to share my expertise
garnered through years of experience, competitions, and
teaching.

Choosing Your Drawing Template:

When it comes to selecting your canvas, it's essential to

get it right. I always go for proportions that mimic real body
shapes and ensure practicality for my designs. Tracing
models' bodies or photos of the model, are my go-to for
accurate outlines. Understanding body shapes and
contours is key for crafting visually stunning designs.

A good body paint template is attached to this workbook.

Design Layout and Planning:

My design process starts with gathering a variety of

reference images to inspire my theme-based body
paint creations. I focus on specific body areas for
placement, avoiding regions prone to smudging during
painting. It's crucial to consider body contours to
achieve seamless and visually appealing results.
Pinterest is your friend!

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 193
Contouring and Shading:

Elevating my body paint designs involves strategic

contouring and shading. I often use darker shades for
contouring, even in single-color paints, to prevent a flat
appearance. Targeting specific areas for shading adds
depth and realism to your design.

Be inspired by other artists!

Check out what your favorite body painters have done

in the past… it might really help! It’s not stealing if you
don’t copy the design. Being inspired by other artists
helps art grow!

Choosing Undergarments:

Maintaining color consistency in body paint starts with

selecting skin-colored undergarments. I recommend
considering stick-on G-strings for their convenience
and realistic skin texture mimicking.

Adding Intricate Details:

While smaller details like fish are cute… they might not
stand out from a distance. Instead, opt for larger
elements for better visibility.

6th Online Summit for Face Painters

May 16-19, 2024 194
Preparation and Color Selection:

Outline your chosen colors to streamline the painting

process and ensure easy access during application.
Utilize pigment powders like eyeshadows for shading
and stencilling, as they blend seamlessly and offer
vibrant colors.

Model Preparation:

Prep the model with necessary cover-ups like foam

latex nipple covers, applied with appropriate adhesive
for comfort and stability.

Painting Techniques:

Begin painting with lighter colors first, gradually building

up to darker shades for depth and dimension. Use a
Kabuki brush for smooth application, ensuring
seamless blending between colors.

Check in on your model!

Remember to prioritize the model's comfort by

checking in regularly and allowing breaks if needed.

May 16-19, 2024 195
Outlining Design Elements:

Outline the main elements of your design, such as

octopus shapes, using a round brush and white paint
for easy removal if you make a mistake.

Strategic Stencilling:

Incorporate stencils strategically for added texture and

detail, ensuring consistency across the entire design.

Mixing Colours:

I'm all about experimenting and finding new shades by

mixing different paints. It's like being a mad scientist but
with colors! Want that perfect purple for your octopus?
Mix some magenta with dark blue, and voilà! You've got
a vibrant purple that's totally unique. It's all about
getting those custom colors that make your design
stand out and pop.

Mehron Gold Metallic Powder:

In my demo, I talked about the awesome Mehron Gold

Metallic Powders I love using. They're super pigmented
and shiny, perfect for making designs pop. Mix them
with Mehron Mixing Liquid, and bam, you've got a
stunning gold paint! I used them to highlight cool details
like the antique key.

Adding Finishing Touches:

Experiment with adding small details like suckers and

eye highlights to enhance realism and visual interest.
Incorporate metallic paint for standout elements like
keys, enhancing their visual impact against the
background. Finish the makeup and add a wig or
headpiece to finish the look!
