What is transformational leadership?

 Transformational leadership is a leadership model that relies on a team’s encouragement to

realize overall success. By raising a team’s morale and self-confidence, the team can then align
itself to an overall vision or common purpose.
 This purpose, however, must be established early on for it to be effective. Transformational
leadership, when properly applied, can take a struggling or stagnant team, and completely
transform it into a productive and dynamic group of individuals.
 This starts by identifying the struggles and strengths of each individual member. Next, it is up to
the leader to define a new common goal and guide the members of the team towards this new
vision.
 Practically, transformational leadership is used to inspire team members to work together as a
single unit, rather than many individual parts. For a stat so dynamic, it is no wonder that many
researchers and experts had a hand in its development.
 Transformational leaders are those who stimulate and inspire followers to both achieve
extraordinary outcomes and, in the process, develop their own leadership capacity.
 Transformational leaders help followers grow and develop into leaders by responding to
individual followers’ needs by empowering them and by aligning the objectives and goals of the
individual followers, the leader, the group, and the larger organization.

COMPONENTS

1. Idealized (TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERS ACT ETHICALLY)

Charismatic leaders give praise to individual members of the team with each success, and they are
the first to take responsibility when things go wrong. They also provide constructive feedback to each
individual team member. Intended influence is also represented through their curiosity.

This is not to say that transformative leaders don’t make mistakes; all leaders do. But when they do make
a mistake, they own up to it and take responsibility for their actions rather than shifting blame onto
someone else. This kind of behavior is what sets transformative leaders apart from others: they are
willing to be held accountable for their actions and are able to maintain a level of transparency that is
refreshing and trustworthy.

2. Inspirational (TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERS HAVE HIGH EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE)

Transformative leaders have high levels of emotional intelligence. They are able to understand and
manage their own emotions, as well as those, and can read the emotions of the people they lead. This
self-awareness allows leaders to assess situations effectively and make decisions that benefit everyone
involved. Self-aware leaders recognize how feelings can influence their behavior and make conscious
efforts to remain positive when giving feedback or delivering bad news. They know this eases resistance
and improves the likelihood of acceptance.
3. Intellectual (TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERS THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX)

Transformative leaders are creative. They are able to think outside the box, come up with new ideas, and
change their strategies when needed. They inspire their team to action by sharing their vision and
making sure that everyone is on board with what they want to achieve, not out of necessity but as a
result of earned buy-in.

Transformative leadership is especially important in times of change or uncertainty. When people are
unsure of what to do or where they should go, leaders need to step in and provide direction for others
so that everyone can get back on track together as a team.

4. Individual (TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERS CARE ABOUT THEIR FOLLOWERS)

Finally, transformative leaders are able to provide individualized consideration for each of their
followers. This means that they take the time to get to know each person on a personal level,
understanding their strengths, weaknesses, goals, and desires. They are able to adapt their leadership
style to suit the needs of each individual, and they provide the support, guidance, and mentorship that
each person needs to succeed.

How to become a transformative leader

If you want to become a transformative leader, there are several things you can do:

 Listen actively. Active listening means paying attention to what the other person is saying
without interrupting or waiting for your turn to speak. It means asking open-ended questions,
reflecting back on what you've heard, and confirming your understanding.
 Show empathy. Understand and relate to the feelings and emotions of others.
 Develop emotional intelligence. This involves understanding your own emotions and how they
influence your behavior. It also involves understanding the emotions of others and being able to
manage and influence those emotions in a positive way.
 Seek feedback. Regularly ask for feedback from peers, subordinates, and superiors. This will help
you understand how you're perceived and where you can improve.
 Engage in continuous learning. Seek out opportunities for professional development, read
books on leadership and management, and attend seminars or workshops.
 Practice self-reflection. Regularly take time to reflect on your behavior, decisions, and leadership
style. This will help you understand what's working and where you can improve.
 Lead by example. As a leader, your behavior sets the tone for the rest of the team. Make sure
you're modeling the values and behaviors you want to see in your followers.
EFFECTS

It is important to recognize that while this leadership style is extremely effective, there are some team
members who will not respond as favorably to transformational leadership. Leaders must adjust their
efforts as needed in order to meet their goals.

What can you do to become a more transformational leader? One of the critical ways to start is by
having belief. You must believe in the vision and path you have created, so that you can inspire others to
believe in your vision as well. Being charismatic, motivating, and focusing on each individual team
member can help you accomplish this through transformative leadership.

What is the main focus of transformative leadership?

The main focus of transformative leadership is to inspire individuals to achieve more than they thought
possible and to help them achieve their full potential.

Transformative leaders are able to tap into people's emotions and inspire them to take action. They are
also excellent at creating a vision for the future that is inspiring and motivating, and they can help
individuals see how they can play a role in achieving that vision. Transformative leaders help individuals
become more than they are currently and enable them to reach their full potential.

Conclusion

Transformative leadership is about serving others, inspiring and motivating them, stimulating their
thinking, acting as role models, and providing individualized consideration. It requires a high level of
emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and empathy. If you aspire to be a transformative leader, focus on
developing these qualities and skills. Your team and organization will benefit immensely from your
leadership.

Apple’s Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs is one of the best examples of transformational leadership in the 21st century. From wearing
pairs of the same clothing each day for increased productivity, to designing the break-through idea of the
iCloud, Steve Jobs was the brain behind the success of Apple.

With Steve Jobs’ legacy guiding the company, the company shifted from product-based identification to
more services and brand loyalty services. Apple is a 2 trillion-dollar company today, and in the next few
years, this is only expected to expand.

Jobs was famous for his visionary leadership that transformed Apple into a leader in the technology
industry.
