GENDER AND SOCIETY

BASIC TYPES OF SEXUALITY

SEXUALITY
Sexuality is deeply personal and individual to each of us.
It’s about the sexual feeling and attraction that we have
for others. There are different types of sexuality, and
everyone’s different.

It’s not as simple as being ‘gay’ or ‘straight’. Some people

are attracted to only one sex, others are attracted to both
and some to a whole range of people regardless of sex or
gender. This can also change over time and based on your
experiences
WHAT IS SEXUAL
ORIENTATION?

a term used to refer to a person's pattern of emotional,

romantic, and sexual attraction to people of a particular
gender (male or female).
WHAT DETERMINES SEXUAL ORIENTATION?

Most scientists agree that sexual orientation

(including homosexuality and bisexuality) is
the result of a combination of environmental,
emotional, hormonal, and biological factors.

In other words, many things contribute to a

person's sexual orientation, and the factors
may be different for different people.
HOW DO PEOPLE KNOW THEIR
SEXUAL ORIENTATION ?
Many people discover their sexual orientation as teens or
young adults, and in many cases without any sexual
experience.

For example, someone may notice that their sexual

thoughts and activities focus on people of the same
gender or both genders. But it’s possible to have
fantasies or to be curious about people of the same sex
without being homosexual or bisexual. And they may not
pursue those attractions.
ARE YOU FEELING
CONFUSED ABOUT
YOUR SEXUALITY
OR GENDER?
TYPES OF SEXUALITY
There are some common labels that people use to
identify their sexuality. This isn’t necessarily defined by who
they have sex with, it’s also about how they feel and how
they choose to identify themselves.

STRAIGHT/HETEROSEXUAL
Attracted mostly to people of the
opposite sex or gender.
HOMOSEXUAL
Attracted mostly to people of the same sex or gender (this used to refer to boys
/ men but now often refers to girls / women as well)

GAY - Socially, people use this term to refer to men who are romantically and
sexually attracted to men. However, those in the community use it as an
umbrella term.
Feminine gay (Femme) Masculine Gay
HOMOSEXUAL
Attracted mostly to people of the same sex or gender (this used to refer to boys
/ men but now often refers to girls / women as well)

LESBIAN - Anybody who isn’t a man and is attracted to non-men may identify as
lesbian. Lesbians can be attracted to non-binary people and anyone who
doesn’t identify as a man. Lesbians can also be transgender or identify as non-
binary.

Lipstick/Femme Lesbian - A lipstick lesbian, otherwise known as a femme lesbian, is renowned

for being the most feminine variety of our species.

According to the stereotype, they dress to impress, aren’t afraid of wearing dresses, can
actually walk in stilettos, and know how to apply liquid eyeliner flawlessly.
HOMOSEXUAL
Butch/Diesel Dyke Lesbian - likes to wear a bandana in her back pocket that’s for some
reason always a little bit sweaty. They typically prefer to date femmes, but diesel-for-diesel is
also common.
Chapstick Lesbian - lA chapstick lesbian is a lesbian term used to describe a person who sits
somewhere between a butch and a femme. They might also identify as soft butch, stem, futch,
or tomboy.

Chapsticks aren’t masculine, but they aren’t feminine either. And they could sway more to
either side depending on how they feel on the day.
Alpha Lesbian - Top of the lesbian food chain and don’t they know it! With their razor-sharp
jawlines, incredible tattoos and buckets of s$x appeal, alphas manage to turn heads wherever
they go, anybody can be an alpha.

The secret to being an alpha is confidence. There is nothing more attractive than someone
who’s comfortable in their own skin and knows what they want.
BISEXUAL
Attracted to both men and women. Those who identify as
bisexual feel a sexual and/or romantic attraction to people of a
different gender as well as their own.

A bisexual person may be in a long-term same-sex or

heterosexual relationship, or they may alternate between the
two.
PANSEXUAL
Attracted to romantic and sexual partners of any gender, sex or sexual
identity.

Pansexuality is also sometimes called omnisexuality. Omnisexuality may be

used to describe those "attracted to people of all genders across the
gender spectrum", and pansexuality may be used to describe the same
people, or those attracted to people "regardless of gender".

Those who identify as pansexual feel attraction to people without noticing

their gender, while omnisexual people recognize the gender of potential
partners. Some people put it this way: Pansexual people are gender-blind,
while omnisexual people are not.
ASEXUAL
Do not experience sexual attraction and / or does not desire to act on
sexual attraction.

Some people also choose the labels ‘queer’ or ‘fluid’ as a way of

expressing themselves by their own personal feelings.
