Figures of speech are used to create a certain effect without expressing the real meaning
of the word.

I. Complete the following sentences with an appropriate hyperbole given in the box.

A simile says that one thing "is like" or "is as … as" another thing.
eg: He is as brave as a lion.           Life is like a box of chocolates.
A metaphor says that one thing "is" another thing. Metaphors do not use the words "like"
or "as" in their comparisons.
eg: Time is money.
II. The following ‘similes’ are converted into ‘metaphors’. Choose the correct options

                             Personification
Personification is when you give an animal or object qualities or
abilities that only a human can have.
III. In each of the following sentences, an object or idea is personified.
Identify the object or idea that is being personified and write which
human trait or action is applied to the object or idea.

Modal Verbs
Modal Verbs are Auxiliary verbs that provide additional
and specific meaning to the main verb.
I.Identify and underline the Modal verbs in the sentences given.

Commas
Commas are used to group similar items together. They are also used in a series of words
and between two clauses
E.g.: While I was reading, my sister was playing. (Separates two clauses)
I. Use a comma in each of the following sentences given.

2. Ali, Sara and Sam will try-out for the basketball team.
3.She needs to walk home, do her homework and wash dishes every day.
4. We are having peas, carrots, roast nuts and cake for dinner.

HYPEN
                       Hyphens are joiners.
Hyphens join some words in compound adjectives.
For example: He owns a three-seater aircraft.
Hyphens join the words in a compound noun.

CLOZE PASSAGE
Read the passage and fill in the blanks:

                Simon was a lawyer. He helped many people. However, he was not a nice
man. His policy was only to help rich people. He didn’t bother about social injustice. He
made a lot of money, but many people didn’t like him. Even people on his staff didn’t
like him. In fact they were glad when he got into trouble.
                Simon had a very bad day. He did many wrong and lost his job. Soon he
didn’t have any money. His wife began to have doubts about him. Simon wanted to have
a new life. He planned to leave the country.
He mentioned his plan to the captain of a ship. The captain was exploring the world.
The captain felt bad for Simon and said, “ I will take you to foreign countries”. They left
the next day.

I would like to inform you that I am a student of _________ (class) and I write this letter to
apologize for my misbehaviour.
My name is ______________ (mention name) and I am writing this letter in reference to the
misconduct which took place on __/__/____ (date) in ________ (period). I accept that such an
intolerable behavior is not acceptable and I should not indulge in it. I would like to say that it
was not done intentionally, and I ensure such behaviour would never be repeated on the school’s
premises.
 I request you to kindly accept my sincere apologies. I ensure such activities will be prevented in
future.
