GAUHATI UNIVERSITY 8th SEMESTER B.E.

(Civil) COMPARTMENTAL
EXAMINATION 2021
Confidential
Symbol :CE- 814
No. of Copies to Print ---------

Full Marks: 100

Pass marks: 35
Time: 4 Hours
Subject: Design of Substructures (ELECTIVE III)
Paper: Theory
Use of Design Aid to IS 456- 1978, IS: 456- 2000, IS:1893-2002 , IS:1893-1984 and IS:13920-1997 allowed

The Figures in the margin indicates full marks for the questions.

Answer any four questions

Question Design an isolated footing for a column 300mmX300mm in size, carrying an 25

No. 1. axial load of 400kN and an uni-axial moment of 25 kN-m. A Plate Load Test
carried out at the proposed founding level at the site indicated a safe bearing
pressure of 150 kN/m2 for the footing. Draw a neat sketch showing the
reinforcement and other details of the footing.

Question Design a combined footing for two columns of size 500mmX500mm each, 25
No. 2. carrying loads of 650 kN and 450 kN and spaced at a C/C distance of 3.5m.
Allowable bearing pressure for the soil may be taken as 140 kN/m2.

Question A building consists of 9 columns 350mmX350mm each, arranged in a square 25

No. 3. grid pattern. The centre-to centre distance between two adjacent columns is
5.0m each. The vertical load carried by the corner columns is 400 kN each, that
carried by other exterior columns is 500 kN each and all other interior columns
carry a vertical load of 750 kN each. Secondary beams are placed suitably
within the raft to reduce the thickness of the raft slab. Proportion the raft and
design one primary beam of the raft.

Question A 12 pile group arranged in 3 rows of 4 each for a column 300mm X 500mm in size 25
No. 4. is to be designed. Vertical load on the column is 650 kN with a moment of 75 kN-m
about the shorter side and 45 kN-m about the longer side of the column. The piles
are 400mm diameter and for design purpose their effective length may be assumed
as 7.0m. Find the load in each pile and design the most heavily loaded pile in the
pile group.

Question Design a pile cap for a column subjected to a vertical axial load of 500 kN. The 25

No. 5. safe load capacity of 400mm uniform shaft pile, 9.0m long is given as 170 kN.
