Design of Substructures 2019

The document is an exam paper for a Design of Substructures course. It contains 6 questions related to designing structural elements like footings, pile foundations, raft foundations, and sheet pile walls. The questions require calculations and drawings to size the elements based on given load and soil conditions.

Answer any four questions

Question Design an isolated footing for a column 400mmX400mm in size, carrying an 25

No. 1. axial load of 500kN and a uniaxial moment of 75 kN-m. Geotechnical
investigation carried out at the site shows that safe bearing pressure of 150
kN/m2 may be adopted for the design of the footing. Draw a neat sketch
showing the reinforcement and other details of the footing.

Question Design a combined footing for two columns of size 500mmX500mm each, 25
No. 2. carrying loads of 500 kN and 425 kN and spaced at a C/C distance of 2.5m.
Allowable bearing pressure for the soil for a 2.0m wide footing at the proposed
foundation level is given as 100 kN/m2. The projection beyond the face of the
heavier column should not exceed 1.2m.

Question A building consists of 12 columns 400mmX400mm each, arranged in 3 rows of 5+8+12

No. 3 4 each. The centre-to centre distance between two adjacent columns is 5.0m =25
each. The vertical load carried by the corner columns is 400 kN each, that
carried by other exterior columns is 550 kN each and the interior columns
carry a vertical load of 650 kN each. Secondary beams are placed suitably
within the raft to reduce the thickness of the raft slab. Proportion the raft and
design the raft slab and one secondary beam in the shorter direction of the raft.
Take the safe bearing capacity of the supporting soil as 50 kN/m2.

Question A column 300mm X 600mm in size is to be supported by a five pile group with pile 5+6+14
No. 4. diameter of 400mm and length 10.0m. Vertical load on the column is 600 kN. The =25
moment about the shorter side of the column being 100 kN-m and 50 kN-m about
the longer side of the column. The 3.0m of the top soil is very loose, underlain by a

Find the load in each pile and design one pile of the pile group to safely withstand
the load likely to be experience by the pile. Also design the pile cap.

cohesionless with an angle of internal fricion of 25 ͦ and a unit weight of 18

settlement.

c) Control of tilt and shift of a well.

d) Precaution for placing footing near hill slopes (for both soil and rock
slopes).

e) Possible modes of failure of trapezoidal R.C.C. footing.
