CYBER CRIME & SECURITY

Computer Security is the protection of the computer system from the theft or
damage to either the software, hardware or to the information present on the
system.

Cyber Crime is any unlawful activity that involves a computer and internet which
is the object of the Crime to steal data or information.

Cyber ethics helps internet users understand what type of online behavior is right
and wrong.

Cyber Security is a means of protecting information system against unauthorized


access to or modification of information

Cyber Predators are people who search online for other people in order to use,
control or harm them.

Cyber attacks deals with stealing of credit cards, sensitive information, personal
information and sensitive data from people in the private sector.

Identity theft is the illegal use of someone else’s personal information in order to
obtain money or credit.

Fraud is the intentional perversion of truth in order to induce another to part with
something of value or to surrender a legal right.

Phishing generally involve the fake sites created by fraudsters, who would trick
the victim in giving out their information.

Hacker is a professional who is able to get most of the personal information


pertaining to the victim if they would be successful in compromising the victim’s
computer or smart phone.

How to Spot a Fake or Scam Website

 Step #1: Pay attention to the address bar (www.domain.com)


 Step #2: Check the domain name
 Step #3: Look up the domain age
(https://whois.domaintools.com)
 Step #4: Look for reliable contact info.
 Step #5: Use only secure payment options
 Step #6: Walk away from deals that are too good to be true

BASIC SECURITY GUIDELINES

 Keep Personal information private online, including the names of your family
members, your school, your telephone number, and your address.
 Use strong and complex passwords with combination of letters, numbers and
symbols. Don’t use the same password on multiple websites.
 Don’t share personal information without knowing exactly who is on the
receiving end.
 Most Organizations – Banks, universities, companies, don’t ask for your personal
information over email. Beware of requests to update or confirm your personal
information.
 Don’t open emails from strangers and avoid clicking on links for unfamiliar sites.
 Never click on popup
 Do not connect to public Wi-Fi to browse important websites such as e-banking
 Be conscious of the website link you visit that requires login details such as
banks. www.gtbank.com (correct) www.gtbank.gtbnig.com (Wrong)
 Change your password often at least every 90 days and avoid using Dictionary
words or similar password from the one changed.
 Be care when participating in surveys and sharing of personal information.
 System connected to the internet is at a higher risk of getting compromised, use
Genuine Antivirus software, update and perform regular scan. (eg. Bitdefender,
Norton, Avast Pro, ESET NOD32).
