PERFECT SIMPLE?
Past Perfect Simple structure

PAST PERFECT:
Simple (1)
We use it talk about an action or event that began in the past,
prior to another action (also in the past). The action that occurred
first is expressed in the past perfect and the one that follows is in
the simple past.
Examples:
a) I had read the book before I watched the movie.
b) Donna had finished her classes when you called.
c) Had you ever been to Russia before
our last trip to Moscow?
PAST PERFECT:
Simple (2)
It is used for actions that occurred before a specific
time in the past.
Examples:
a) I had already woken up when the alarm
clock rang at 7am.
b) My parents hadn't been to Margarita
Island before 1999.
c) She hadn't started school by the time
she was 5 years old.

Past Perfect Continuous structure

PAST PERFECT:
Continuous (1)
We use it to refer to an action in the past (in progress) when
another action interrupted it. The past perfect continuous is used for
an action in progress and the past simple for action that interrupts.
Examples:
a) I’d been working for hours when I fell asleep at my desk.
b) Frank bought a new car. He’d been
looking for one since last year.
c) We’d been arguing for days when
Elizabeth found a resolution.
PAST PERFECT:
Continuous (2)
It is used to demonstrate cause and effect in the past.
Examples:
a) She was tired because she’d been working too much.
b) They were angry because they’d been
waiting for me for hours.
c) My mom was happy for I'd been studying
six languages.
d) The lecture was a disaster as Mark had been
preparing it with the wrong topics.
