WHAT IS THE VOLUME?
★ SCIENTIFIC TERMS:
Volume refers to the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by and
object, or substance.
In simpler way, we can say volume is the space occupied by an object.
Imagine u have a box. The volume of the box is like the amount of space it
takes up inside
★ Volume is a physical quantity, so it can be measured.
★ S.I for volume is cubic meter ( )
Other S.I units can change depending on what measurements you have
been given, like
CALCULATION OF VOLUME
REGULAR SHAPED OBJECTS:
⚝ Regular:
Of a three dimensional shape, such as a cube or cuboid, having a
volume that can be calculated using a simple equation.
⚫ Regular shaped objects are objects that can be solved by directly
using an equation. All the sides are equal and all the inside angles are
equal.
Physics Page 1
⚫ To find out volume of regular shaped objects, we can use this
formula :
Length x breadth x height
LxBxH
This formula can be used for cube, cuboid
⚫ Volume of 3d triangle:
Xbxhxl
★To find out the volume of gas, or liquid, we take out the area of the
container
IRREGULAR OBJECTS
⚝ Irregular:
Of a three-dimensional shape, having a volume that cannot be
calculated using a simple question
If the shape of the material is irregular , then we work out the volume
using a method called the DISPLACEMENT METHOD
DISPLACEMENT METHOD
A technique used to measure the volume of an irregularly shaped object
that cannot be easily measured using traditional geometric methods
PROCEDURE:
Take graduated cylinder / measuring cylinder, filled partially with water
Physics Page 2
Take graduated cylinder / measuring cylinder, filled partially with water
Mark the level of water as V1 (volume one)
Gently immerse the irregular object in the cylinder so that the level of
water rises. The object should displace an amount of liquid equal to its own
volume.
Mark the rise as V2 (volume two)
The volume of irregular object can be found by subtracting the initial
volume from the final volume (V2 - V1)
Example : for this diagram we can see the rise in the volume of water
when the stone is added.
To calculate the volume of stone:
Volume of water / V1 : 200
Volume of water after stone added / V2 : 260
Volume of stone= V2-v1
= 260-200
= 60
Precautions
• We need to keep the graduated cylinder on a flat, smooth surface.
This is because:
○ Ensures the cylinder's stability
○ Prevents unintended tilting that could lead to spills
○ Aligns volume markings for precise reading
○ Minimizes vibrations that might affect measurements
○ Contributes to a safer working environment by preventing
accidents

○
accidents
○ Reduces risk of contamination
▪ prevention of foreign substances or impurities from coming
into contact with the liquid being measured inside the
graduated cylinder.
▪ Using a flat/smooth surface helps maintain a clean and
controlled environment for measurements, minimizing the
likelihood of particles, dust, or other contaminants from the
surrounding area falling into the liquid.
• Observe the level of water from lower-meniscus and not the Lower
meniscus
• Eye should be perpendicular to the liquid column to avoid Parallax error
as if the viewing angle is not perpendicular to the scale at that point
where we are taking the reading, we will get less or more value of
the measurement than the actual measurement.
• Makes sure that the object your measuring is clean and dry, Any dirt,
dust or moisture on the objects surface could affect the accuracy
of the displacement measurement.
• The liquid in the displacement vessel should not react with the object,
Chemical reactions could alter the volume of the object, or the liquid,
leading to inaccurate measurements
• Take precise measurements of the initial volume (before submersion)
and the final volume (after submersion). Small errors in the
measurement can accumulate and lead to significant inaccuracies in
the calculated volume.
• Ensure that there are no air bubbles trapped on the surface of the
submerged object. Air bubbles and displace liquid and can lead to

•
submerged object. Air bubbles and displace liquid and can lead to
incorrect volume calculations
• When submerging the object, make sure it is fully immersed and
doesn't touch the sides or bottom of the container. The objects
weight might cause it to rest on the container's bottom, affecting the
volume measurement
• IF accurate results are needed, perform the experiment multiple
times and calculate the average volume which can help solve mitigate
small errors or variations in the measurement process
• When submerging the object, do so gently to avoid splashing or
disturbing the liquid. Splashing can lead to inaccuracies in volume
measurements
• Ensure that the container your using for the displacement method is
appropriately sized for the object. The container should be large
enough to accommodate the object without causing overflow or
excessive displacement( overflow).
Atmospheric pressure CAN have an influence on volume measurements
when using displacement method. Gas is affected the most as it is
compressible. Liquid is generally much less compressible than gases.
If larger irregular object:
We use EUREKIA CAN / DISPLACEMENT CAN
