Question Answer Marks Guidance

There are six pages above Q1a that all require “seen” on them. These should be checked before you start marking a script and any answers
linked to the appropriate question part.
1(a) glass rod / stirring rod 1 Allow “stir rod”
Ignore stick / thermometer / spatula / spoon /
Ignore stirrer / rod alone
1(b) to mix (the substances together) 1 Allow to combine / distribute evenly / all molecules/ions/substances to
come into contact.
Allow to speed up the reaction / to ensure complete reaction / so that
all of sodium carbonate reacts
Allow so calcium chloride reacts completely with aqueous sodium
carbonate
Ignore so that all of the reactants react
Ignore so that the solutions react
Ignore to improve the reaction
Ignore “so that they can react” alone
Reject so that all of the calcium chloride reacts
Reject answers based on dissolving or providing heat/energy

Question Answer Marks Guidance

1(c) Allow 3-D representations

no funnel = no marks

1 If there is no suitable container then only M2 can be scored

M1 funnel over a suitable container to collect the filtrate
Allow any container that will hold liquid (flask, test-tube, beaker, petri
dish, measuring cylinder etc.)
Ignore lines showing a blockage (so allow a top line drawn across the
funnel and/or a bottom line across the bottom of the spout)

1 The filter paper must be visible inside a funnel. The diagram does not
M2 filter paper shown inside the funnel
need to be labelled, the filter paper must be visible and extend up the
inside of the funnel sides (not just a labelled or unlabelled line/disk
across the bottom or top of the funnel), the paper does not need to be
a sharp “V”, a curve is fine and it can be smaller than the funnel
Reject if there is a clear hole in the bottom of the filter paper, but allow
filter paper to be shown as a dashed line or if there is a very small gap
that is probably a result of drawing two straight lines with a rule and
not meeting properly.
1(d)(i) calcium chloride/CaCl2 OR sodium chloride/NaCl 1 Ignore sodium carbonate / water
Names take precedence over any formula
Reject additional incorrect substances

1(d)(ii) pour water over the residue in the funnel 1 Ignore 1di when marking this
Allow add the residue to water and filter again
Allow – wash/rinse (with water)
Ignore heating/warming/drying
Reject distillation

Question Answer Marks Guidance

1(e) Reject any test done on the residue/calcium carbonate

Allow answers anywhere in answer space
Test for carbonate ions
M1 add dilute hydrochloric acid /nitric acid / sulfuric acid 1 Allow any named acid Ignore just “add acid”
Ignore nitric acid followed by silver nitrate

M2 does not effervesce/fizz/bubble 1 M2 only awarded from a correct or almost correct M1 – so “add acid”
can score M2
Allow
M1 test with universal indicator/litmus–
M2 does not turn blue

OR

Test for calcium ions

M1 add aqueous sodium hydroxide / aqueous sodium Allow
carbonate M1 flame test. Allow a correct description of a flame test, if description
is incorrect (such as heating in a test tube) then no M1 but can still
M2 (white) precipitate / filter and there is a solid residue award M2
M2 orange-red / brick-red Ignore yellow and “orange” alone in flame
test results

Ignore adding more calcium chloride solution

M2 requires M1 to be correct or a near miss

Reject additional incorrect tests and results

Question Answer Marks Guidance

2a M1 All three final readings recorded correctly (26.2, 12.9, 39.1) 1 place tick to right of final reading row

M2 All three initial readings recorded correctly (0.8, 0.2, 1.0) 1 ignore missing trailing zero so allow “1” in M2. place tick to right of
initial reading row

Allow 1 mark (of M1 and M2) if all 6 burette readings are correct but
initial and final are swapped

M3 all three titres correct (25.4, 12.7, 38.1) 1 Allow ecf. ignore missing trailing zero. Place tick to right of bottom
row

M4 all nine volumes recorded to 1 dp or better 1 Must be consistent (so not a mix of 1 and 2 dp) place tick or cross to
bottom right of table
2bi A there is no mark for identifying which acid, both the acid and the
and 1 explanation are required.
as volume (of A in experiment 1 needed was) lower (than ORA. Allow quantitative comparison even if actual magnitude is
volume of B in experiment 3) incorrect (such as volume of B was 3 times as much or volume of A
was half)
Allow less (acid) needed / smaller amount (of acid) needed
Ignore just volumes of titres repeated, a comparison of the titres is
required but Allow comments such as “A needed only 25.4 and B
needed 38.1” as A being less is implied
Ignore any comments on experiment 2
Ignore any explanation involving less time
2 b ii 1.5 1 allow numerical evaluation of:
titre in experiment 3  titre in experiment 1
allow correct rounding to minimum of 1dp from incorrect titres
allow incorrect acid to be more concentrated as this is marked in the
previous part
Reject any answer of <1
Ignore any units

Question Answer Marks Guidance

2ci Allow reverse argument throughout

M1 a greater volume is used in Experiment 1 1 M1 is for a correct qualitative answer, M2 for a correct quantitative
answer.
Allow amount etc for volume

M2 by a factor of two / twice as much 1 M2 subsumes M1

correct factor: titre 1  titre 2
Allow 2 takes half the volume of 1
Allow 1 takes 12.7 cm3 more
Allow 2 takes 12.7 cm3 less
Ignore quoted titres – NB 12.7 is a titre AND it is the difference – read
carefully!
Ignore any explanations as to why volume is different
2 c ii M1 19.05/19.1 1 Allow correct evaluation of titre 3 x (titre 2  titre 1) as ecf
If titres incorrect we must award M1 for 19.05/19.1 or ecf value (they
may have gone back and re read burettes – but I doubt it)
Allow correct rounding to 1dp or more or use of factor given in 2(c)(i)

M2 cm3 1 units are a standalone mark

2di (dilute) hydrochloric acid / A 1 Allow HCl
Reject any other named substance removed
The question asks candidates to identify, so answers such as
“impurities” are not sufficient. Answer must refer to hydrochloric acid or
A,
2 d ii larger volume (of acid) / more acid needed / larger titre 1 Ignore explanations

2 d iii increases volume of aqueous sodium carbonate 1 Allow increases amount/moles of aqueous sodium carbonate /
increases titre / more acid needed / there would be excess sodium
carbonate / increases volume
Allow water will not changes moles/amount of sodium carbonate
Ignore comments on changing concentration of sodium carbonate /
water does not affect sodium carbonate
Ignore comments about it becoming more alkaline

Question Answer Marks Guidance

2e so colour (change) is easy to see / colour (change) clear(er) / 1 Allow end point for colour change
colour (change) more obvious Ignore more accurate / so colour (change) can be seen
Idea must be based on improving visibility of colour change or making
colour clear. Making observations clearer is insufficient
2f answers can be anywhere in answer space

M1 none 1 Ignore comments on time taken being less

M2 amount/moles (of sodium carbonate) does not change / 1 Allow ONLY reacts faster / ONLY changes rate
volume of sodium carbonate does not change / concentration M2 requires M1 to be correct
(of sodium carbonate) does not change

Question Answer Marks Guidance

3a no change 1 Allow no ppt / no observation / colourless / no reaction / no effect /

nothing happens
Reject any answer that suggests a change – such as “becomes
colourless”
3b yellow precipitate 1 Ignore solid / cloudy / pale / dark / canary
Allow ppte/ppt
Reject any additional incorrect observations
3ci no change 1 Allow no ppt / no observation / colourless / no reaction / no effect /
nothing happens
Reject any answer that suggests a change – such as “becomes
colourless”
Ignore bubbling and any reference to smell or turning litmus blue or
ammonia
3 c ii (red) litmus (paper) turns/becomes/goes blue 1 Allow UI paper in place of litmus

3f carbon dioxide / CO2 1 name takes precedence over any formula.
Reject additional incorrect species
3g M1 Na+ / sodium 1 name takes precedence over any formulae
Reject additional incorrect species

M2 Fe2+/ iron(II) OR Cr3+ / chromium(III) 1 Allow “chromium” without the oxidation state, but iron MUST
have the correct oxidation state. Only one of iron(II) and
chromium can score
M3 CO32– / carbonate 1

4 Any 6 from: 6 The introduction to the question states acid in excess – so ignore any
statements about other reagent in excess.
Ignore heating, addition of water

MP1 use a known/measured/stated/fixed volume of dilute Allow “acid” but Reject any acid that is not sulfuric
sulfuric acid. Ignore mass/moles/amount

MP2 add a known/measured/stated/fixed mass of zinc Ignore moles/amount/volume

Statements such as keep mass zinc and volume sulfuric acid the
same for both experiments scores MP1 and MP2

MP3 measure time to collect a set volume of gas / measure Allow use of “amount” or “how much gas” etc here as use of volume
the volume of gas collected in a set time OR time until no more already hit in MP1
fizzing OR no more gas made OR time until no more solid OR Allow plotting of graphs of gas volume/mass/number of bubbles
time until no more mass loss OR time until no more gas against time
collected OR measure mass loss/gas volume in set time

MP4 use of suitable reaction vessel – (conical) flask, test-tube, Allow beaker unless trying to collect gas. If they are collecting the gas
boiling tube OR gas syringe/inverted measuring cylinder to and measuring the volume then ignore beaker as suitable apparatus.
collect gas Reject use of a bung in vessel if using mass loss

Allow just repeating the experiment with an unknown mass of copper

MP5 repeat but add (a known mass/measure) of copper as some candidates are doing it with copper first and then without copper
well as zinc – that is fine

filtering and drying not needed.

MP6 filter out the copper from the solution, (wash and) dry the Allow just “weigh the copper” or even just a visual inspection “look at
copper and weigh the copper copper to see if changed”

Answer must have reference to both time or quantity of gas made in

MP7 copper is a catalyst if mass does not change AND more set time AND the copper
gas collected in set time/ time to collect set volume of gas is Allow copper is a catalyst if unchanged and more gas collected in set
less / time to end is less time / time to collect set volume of gas is less.
Allow correct reference to graph for rate part of answer

MP7 could subsume MP6 for visual inspection
