MATHEMATICS FOR UPPER CLASS TWO

INSTRUCTION
Students are expected to download this question, print and solve all problems inside the printed
copy.

NB: THIS ASSIGNMENT SHOULD BE SUBMITTED UNFAILINGLY ON THE 30TH OCTOBER, 2023
Question One

A rubber ball is dropped from a height of 6 meters and after the first bounce rises to a height of 4.7m. it
is left to continue bouncing until it stops.

a. A computerized timer is started when it first hits the ground. The second contact with the
ground occurs after 1.958 seconds and third after 3.690 seconds. Given that the times between
consecutive contacts with the ground follow a geometric sequence, how long does the ball take
to stop bouncing?

b. The heights to which the ball rises after each impact also follow a geometric sequence. Between
the release of the ball and the second bounce the ball travels 6 + 2 x 4.7 = 15. 4m. How far does
the ball travel altogether.

c. New employee joining a firm in the clerical grade receive an annual salary of $8500. Every year
they stay with the firm they have a salary increase of $800, up to a maximum of $13300 per
annum. How much does a new employee earn in total, up to and including the year on
maximum salary?
Question Two

a. The first term of a geometric progression is 8 and the sum to infinity 400.
i. Find the common ratio

ii. Determine the least number of terms with a sum greater than 399

b. A geometric progression has 6 terms. The first term is 192 and the common ratio is 1.5. An
arithmetic progression has 21 terms and common difference 1.5. Given that the sum of all the
terms in the geometric progression is equal to the sum of all the terms in the arithmetic
progression, find the first term and the last term of the arithmetic progression.

c. The first term of a geometric progression is 81 and the fourth term is 24. Find (i) the common
ratio of the progression, [2] (ii) the sum to infinity of the progression. [2] The second and third
terms of this geometric progression are the first and fourth terms respectively of an arithmetic
progression. (iii) Find the sum of the first ten terms of the arithmetic progression.
Question Three

a. Solve the following logarithmic equation

2 − log 4 𝑥 7
+ (log 4 𝑥)2 = 0
7 − log 4 𝑥 2

b. Solve the following simultaneous logarithmic equations

log 2(𝑦 − 1) = 1 + log 2 𝑥

2 log 3 𝑦 = 2 + log 2 𝑥

15.05 × √0.00695
c. Use logarithm tables to evaluate 6.95 × 102

d. The percentage error in estimating the width of a pool is 4%. If it was measured to be 2.6m

deep, find the actual depth.
