Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQs) are work-based
modifications that access the knowledge, skill and attitudes required to
perform a job role successfully. It can also be another option in training
and certification.
The CVQ I have pursued is Food Preparation and Cookery Level One. I
chose this particular CVQ because I wanted to enhance my culinary
skills and overcome my fear of stoves and fires. I believe that pursuing
this CVQ will be a great way for me to overcome those fears. In
addition, having successfully achieved a CVQ will allow me to be more
marketable and have more career opportunities.
CVQs can be beneficial because they assist with the transition from
school to the work environment, they enable all students to leave school
with an additional certificate that enhances their entry level into their
chosen career. CVQs also add a valuable contribution to the workforce
while also facilitating the movement of skilled persons within
CARICOM territories.

His ry of Deigh n Gri Secondary School
Deighton Griffith Secondary School was established in 1991 and is
named after Mr. Deighton Griffith, a well known Barbadian Educator.
The first group of students were chosen from all over Barbados. Mr.
John Blackman served as the school’s first principal and Mr. Malcolm
Squires served as the chairman of the Board of Management. The
primary focus of the school was on technical and vocational subjects,
with a particular emphasis on Home Economics.
Over the years, the school has grown significantly, from 600 students
and 35 teachers to 722 children and 62 teachers. Recent projects have
resulted in a renovated Industrial Technology block as well as expanded
Agricultural Science and Technology facilities. A variety of
achievements have been made in athletics, public speaking and debating,
as well as the visual and perceptual arts.
Students have participated in over 30 different sporting or
extracurricular events at the school. This has helped the school to
achieve its long-term goal of creating a well-rounded individual. In
2012, a strategic plan was created that mapped out the school's future for
the next five years. In 2016, a School Improvement Grant resulted in
