Technology Grade 7 Task 2: Pat Time: Term 1 TOTAL: 70

This document provides instructions for a practical assessment task (PAT) on mechanical systems and control. Students are asked to design and build a simple working model of a Jaws of Life hydraulic rescue tool that demonstrates either a cutting or opening/widening function. The model must follow the design process and be evaluated based on criteria such as its ability to cut or widen loads, use of hydraulics, linkages, aesthetics, and meeting specifications. Students will complete steps for investigation, design, making, and communication and submit their work along with drawings and a model.

TECHNOLOGY GRADE 7
PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT TASK
THEME: MECHANICAL SYSTEMS AND CONTROL

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Learners are to work individually.

2. Topic: Jaws of Life hydraulic rescue tool.
3. Knowledge: Application of theoretical knowledge in the study guide.
4. Technological process: Follow the process as explained in the study guide.
5. Share your photos with Impaq at info@impaq.co.za.
6. Assessment: Use the rubric provided at the end of the task.

ASSIGNMENT
Make a simple working model of the Jaws of Life hydraulic rescue tool to rescue trapped
accident victims. The model must represent any one function of the tool: cutting or
opening/widening.

The final document must include the following:

• A design brief (a brief description of the problem, who will use it, what it will be used
for, and the impact on the environment)
• Restrictions
• Design specifications of the model and real Jaws of Life (size, material, etc.)
• 3-D freehand drawing in oblique projection using dark and faint lines
• 2-D working drawing showing one view with dimensions to scale
• A working model of the final solution
• A cover page with the following: your name and surname, student number, name of
your model/solution and an artistic impression of the final product (photograph or
picture)

Task 2023
G07 ~ Technology

The model must meet the following requirements:

• It will be tested for its ability to cut or widen.
• Its ability to use hydraulics to obtain a mechanical advantage
• The use of complex linkages (e.g., linkages with more than one pivot)
• It must be aesthetic (attractive/beautiful).
Follow the design process to solve the problem.

Step 1: Investigation skills and continuous evaluation

1.1 What is the problem that must be solved?

1.2 Pictures of different Jaws of Life hydraulic rescue tools
1.3 Notes accompanying the pictures of the different Jaws of Life hydraulic rescue tools
1.4 Specifications:
• Show how the Jaws of Life tool is made and the purpose of each part.
• Give a short description of the characteristics of the Jaws of Life.
1.5 Materials that are used in the making of the Jaws of Life. Write down what you think
the suitable materials will be to make the different parts of a Jaws of Life hydraulic
rescue tool.
1.6 Skills required for using various types of hydraulic rescue tools
1.7 Purpose of the Jaws of Life hydraulic rescue tool (cutting, widening, etc.).

Step 2: Design skills and continuous evaluation

2.1 Design at least ONE idea to meet the requirements of hydraulic rescue tools.
Make a 3-D freehand drawing of the idea.
2.2 Label the drawing to show the different parts and what the parts are made from.

Task 2023
G07 ~ Technology

You may use the drawing sheet provided

Write a design brief and include:

2.3 The problem and the specifications for the making of the hydraulic rescue tool
2.4 The existing restrictions (for example, the material must be strong enough for the
tool)
2.5 The impact the hydraulic rescue tool will have on society (environment)
2.6 Materials: List all the materials you plan to use to make the model
2.7 Use: Who will use the hydraulic rescue tool?

Step 3: Making skills and continuous evaluation

3.1–3.3 Draw a 3-D freehand drawing in oblique projection using dark and faint lines on an
A4 page to illustrate your final idea.
3.4 Draw a 2-D working drawing showing one view with dimensions to scale on an A4
page.
3.5 Place the views in the correct position on the drawing sheet.
3.6 Your drawings must be neat.
3.7 Draw the construction lines light enough so that you do not need to erase them.
3.8–3.9 Draw a 10-mm frame around the A4 page. Your name, surname and student
number must appear on the drawing sheet in block letters.

Model
3.10 The model is a representation of the proposal that you have developed. The model
can be made from any available materials. Try to use refuse material to keep costs
to a minimum. A glue gun works very well to assist with constructing the model, but
work carefully because the glue is hot.
3.11 The finishing of the model must be neat.
3.12 The model must be as aesthetic (attractive/beautiful) as possible.
3.13 The model must be sturdy so that it will not fall apart.
3.14 The different components of the model should move freely.
3.15 The model must meet the set requirements.

You may use the template provided

Step 4: Communication skills

4.1–4.2 Present your design with your name, surname and student number as well as a
freehand artistic drawing or photo of the final product.
4.3–4.5 The final document must be neat, organised and presented with a contents page.

GRAND TOTAL: 70

Tips
• No expensive equipment is required to build the model.
• If possible, use a glue gun to assemble the model.
• Use any refuse material, e.g., twigs, rolled paper.
• Be creative and make your own unique creation.
