Pendulum

This lab report describes an experiment conducted by a group of students to calculate the gravitational acceleration of the Earth using a simple pendulum. The students measured the length and period of oscillation of pendulums with two different masses and lengths ranging from 80cm to 120cm. They used the measured values to calculate the gravitational acceleration and its uncertainty. Their results found the average gravitational acceleration to be approximately 10 m/s2 with small variations between measurements.

Title
Local Acceleration due to Gravity using
Simple Pendulum
Abstract
The period of a pendulum could be obtained by using the quantities length and gravity.
But, in actual measurement, we could measure the period (time) and length directly because they
are fundamental quantities. By these measurements we could precisely come with the
gravitational acceleration of the Earth. We will try to calculate the gravitational acceleration
that acts up on objects from this experiment.

Purpose
The main objectives of this experiment are:

• Measuring the length and period of a simple pendulum

• Claculating the gravitational acceleration of the Earth using the measured
quantities
• Measuring the error and uncertainity in the measurement

Materials
The materials and instruments used in the experiment are:

▪ Masses (2 Bobs of different size)

▪ String with a measurable length
▪ Stand or ceiling as support for the pendulum
▪ Digital Stopwatch
▪ Meter stick (ruler)

Procedure
Follow the following procudures when conductig the experiment:

1. Attach the first bob (mass) on the string at length of x=80 cm.
2. Slightly move the bob and calculate the time tken by the pendulum to finish 5 full
cycles (10 individual cycles)
3. Divide the total time taken by 5 to obtain the T (Period) of the pendulum.
4. Calculate the gravitational acceleration of the earth from the recorded length and
period of the pendulum.
5. Do the procedure 1-4 again on the same bob four more times adding 10cm length to
the string each time.
6. Do the whole experiment of the second bob (mass)
