CLAMPING A WORKPIECE
Task 1. Work with a classmate. Look at the pictures and discuss the questions.
Imagine you need to machine a workpiece. What do you need to do with it? Where do you put it?
Task 2. Read the text. Answer the questions.
If you want to do drilling, boring or grinding operation to go well, you need to fix your workpiece
well. Workpiece must be fixed in such a way that it does not move around or it is not drawn up or
down.
Small workpieces can be held by a clamp or vice on a support. Larger workpieces are safely clamped
in the machine vice that has straight or prismatic jaws. Very big parts must be clamped on the
machine table directly. For this purpose, clamps and locking screws and other auxiliary means are
required. For serial or mass production, jigs are used.
1. Why do we need to clamp workpiece?
2. How do we clamp a workpiece in mass production?
3. How do we clamp a very large workpiece?
4. How is a small workpiece clamped?
Task 3. Look at the pictures. Identify different clamping means from the text.

Task 4. Watch the following video about how to clamp a workpiece:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7tHxhQ7yaY . Write the advice the man gives. Watch again
and answer the questions.
1. What tool do we use to keep the workplace clean?
2. What are parallels used for in clamping?
3. What is used to fix parallels?
4. What do we need calippers for?
5. Why are soft jaws called „soft“?
6. What is vice handle for?
7. What tool do we use to keep the workplace clean? (air blow gun)
8. What are parallels used for in clamping? (to elevate or stock material above the vice)
9. What is used to fix parallels? (magnetic parallel keepers)
10. What do we need calippers for? (measure distance from top of material to top of jaws)
11. Why are soft jaws called „soft“? (they are made of soft material, e.g. aluminium)
12. What is vice handle for? (tightening jaws, clamping workpiece)
