Mechanical Design and Production Department Kinematics of Mechanisms and Robotics

Problem 1: How many DOF do the following joints have? Your knee, ankle, shoulder, hip, knuckle.

Problem 2: A pair of bolt cutters is shown in the


following Figure 1. Draw a kinematic diagram of
this mechanism, selecting the lower handle as the
frame. The end of the upper handle and the cutting
surface of the jaws should be identified as points of
interest. Calculate the degree of freedom of this
mechanism.

Problem 3: A mechanism is used to open the door of a


heat- treating furnace and is shown in Figure 2. Draw a
kinematic diagram of the mechanism and calculate its
degree of freedom. The end of the handle should be
identified as a point of interest.

Problem 6: Calculate the Grashof condition of the fourbar mechanisms defined below.
a. L1 = 2, L2 = 4.5, L3 = 7, and L4 = 9.
b. L1 = 2, L2 = 3.5, L3 = 7, and L4 = 9.
c. L1 = 2, L2 = 4.0, L3 = 6, and L4 = 8.
