Assignment 2: Structural Brief
Introduction
You have been appointed to undertake a structural analysis for the proposed steel industrial
warehouse. A conceptual analysis was done by a previous team and based on the proposed
structural steel section sizes; a detailed structural analysis is required. Submit a short but
comprehensive report to your client (maximum 15 pages) including your findings.
Figure 1: Imagery showing location of Saldanha Bay
The structural report should include the following:
Load Calculations, Load transfers, Assumption, Analysis and Drawing Annotations.
GA1: Problem Solving
(Includes, but is not limited to the listed below):
o Based on the structural drawings provided in the project brief, neatly annotate a typical
portal frame and showing all the loading and its transferring mechanism. Draw annotated
load transfer diagram of applied load and reactions (horizontal, vertical forces and moment
at support and joints), direction of load indicated using arrows. Annotated sketch must be
drawn neatly (use any appropriate computer software e.g. PowerPoint) and mention all the
relevant codes used in the calculation of loads. Comment on the selection of SLS and ULS
Factors as well as load combination factors and determine the worst load case combination.
o Based on the worst-case loading determined above, perform hand calculation of a typical
portal frame analysis to determine the axial force diagram (AFD), shear force diagram (SFD)
and bending moment diagrams (BMD). Using the design member forces obtained, draw
neat:
a) shear force and axial force diagrams,
b) bending moment diagrams
o
o Describe the general design problem, constraints, and the approach taken to solve the
problem. Present the process followed (Methodology) to determine the member forces in
the form of a flow chart.

PROKON: Modelling and Validation
GA5: Engineering methods, skills and tools, including information technology
(Includes, but is not limited to the listed below):
o Create a suitable model for a typical portal frame (define material and section properties)
using PROKON and perform an analysis to determine design member forces, i.e. analyse the
frame to determine the axial force diagram (AFD), shear force diagram (SFD) and bending
moment diagrams (BMD).
NB: The hand calculations were performed based on the assumed worst load case, however
the PROKON model must analyse all load cases (include USL, SLS and combination factors)
which will generate maximum and minimum load case envelopes.
o Using the results of your PROKON analysis and generate (worst case):
a) shear force and axial force diagrams,
b) bending moment diagrams
o Compare the PROKON results with those obtained from Hand analysis techniques and
comment on their differences and similarities, provide suitable recommendations.
a) Consider the maximum forces from hand calculations and PROKON analysis.
b) Are the design loads comparable?
GA7: Sustainability and impact of engineering activity
Structure life assessment and durability.
(Includes, but is not limited to the listed below):
o In your report include a that discusses in detail the sustainability and impact (environmental,
social, economic, etc.) of the project construction. Consider the location of the project, and
the material used. Indicate the structure design life and measures that will be taken to reach
it.
o Include additional intermediate maintenance measures that can be used to ensure
thestructure design life is reached.
o Discuss the advantages and disadvantaged of using steel, compare with an alternative
material. Your comparison must be based on time, cost, and quality. Cost comparison of
rawmaterials (e.g. Cost of X Tonnes of Steel vs cost of X Tonnes of concrete/other material).
Include comparison of environmental impact of steel vs other optional material. Also
consider the availability of the construction material locally.
o Discuss the direct and indirect social impact of the project construction.
