Objectives: 8.3-8.4
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
1 Describe the reactions of some metals with oxygen
2 Compare how reactive some metals are with oxygen
3 Describe the reactions of some metals with water
4 Compare how reactive of some metals are with water
Reactions between metals and oxygen is an oxidation reaction
Many metals react with oxygen if they get hot enough
The general word equation for this reaction is:
metal + oxygen =>metal oxide
2Mg +O2 => 2MgO
Some metals, such as gold, do not react with oxygen.
They are generally unreactive. They are described as inert.
Silver reacts slowly with the air and if a silver object is not cleaned it
goes black over time, as silver oxide is formed.
Some metals are highly reactive.
Eg. Potassium, sodium and calcium.
The shiny new surface => dull => the metal reacts with
oxygen.
Too Reactive => must be stored in Oil
The layer of metal oxide on the surface prevents the
metal from reacting from air or water vapour
Water is needed for the reaction to take
place.
When iron is left in damp air it rusts
The reaction takes a long time to happen as
iron is not very reactive with oxygen
Iron loses its properties. A strong iron girder
can become rusted and fall apart.
=> building collapsing.
It can be galvanized (covering the iron
It can be painted
with a layer of zinc)
This stops the oxygen in the air reaching the iron
Some metals such
as these two react
vigorously.
They have to be
stored under oil to
prevent reaction
with water vapour
in the air
Calcium and magnesium reacts less in water
The gas given off is gathered in the test tube by the
displacement of the water
A piece of calcium is placed at the bottom of the
beaker
Some metals do not react with water, but may react with steam
Magnesium will react more rapidly with steam
From time to time the heat is directed to the
wool.
The wool has been soaked in water that
produces steam once heated, resulting into a
form of gas
(Magnesium oxide + hydrogen)
The gas given off can be burnt
8.5: METAL WITH ACID
A FAMILIAR REACTION
The reaction of magnesium with dilute hydrochloric acid.
MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE IS AN EXAMPLE OF A SALT
WHEN A METAL REACTS WITH AN ACID, THE PRODUCTS ARE SALT AND
HYDROGEN.
