Relief Printing Inspired by Ethnic Designs

Fig. 1. Tracing the coin under the paper.

Introduction
Have you tried tracing a single coin at the back of your paper? If not, try it now. As you trace
the coin, what did you observed? Tracing a coin is an example of printmaking. It transfers the
image of the coin as the pencil starts shading the part where the coin was.

In this unit, we will know how printmaking was developed here in the Philippines as well as
the lives of the cultural communities in the country through this kind of art.

3
Review
In this unit, we will be making a relief print inspired by our ancestors’ ethnic designs. Let us
recall some of the terms that will help understand the succeeding lessons.

● Painting is the art of applying paint to the surface.

● Cultural Communities is a group of people that shared cultural heritage.
● Indigenous people are practitioners of ancient culture and traditions.
● Landmark is an important structure or place.
● Igorot is a group of people who lived in the Cordillera region.
● Malong is a piece of cloth in Southern Philippines.

4
Lesson 1: Repetition and Alternation in
Relief Prints from Cultural Communities
Repetition and Alternation are some of the widely used patterns in creating designs. In the
Philippines, we can see them in fabrics, pottery, and even tattoos. Let us learn more about
ethnic designs and relief prints from different cultural communities in this lesson.

Learning Targets

In this lesson, you should be able to:

● analyze how existing ethnic motifs are repeated and alternated;
● draw ethnic motifs and create a design by repeating, alternating or by radial
arrangement; and
● explain how repetition and alternation add beauty to an artwork.

Warm-up

Design Design, Design

Describe the picture below.

5
Learn about It!
Relief Printing

Relief printing is the oldest way of printmaking. Relief

printing is created by printing the (Plate) surface using scrap
materials like vegetables, fruits, leaves or textured materials
like a coin, also by rubbing the objects through pencil or
crayons.

Today's generation, relief printmaking is still existing through rubber stamp where your
teacher used to stamp your excellent work. The raised surface of the rubber will print and the
areas lower than the surface will not. The ink will be applied to the raised surface and rubbed
using a baren resulting in a mirror image of the original.

Repetition

A drawing of a horizontal line and several horizontals next to it is what we called Repetition.
Repetition refers to a shape or object that is repeated. Repeating art elements creates
interest, movements, harmony, and unity. But repetition is limited in one or two objects or
shapes: not enough to make a pattern or rhythm.

Fig 1.1. A Maranao Langkit design that shows repetition.

Source: Khadaffy D. Mangondato (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MARANAO_LANGKIT.jpg),

There are two forms of repetition: the radiation where the repeated elements spread out
from a central point, and the gradation where the repeated elements become smaller to
bigger.

6
Radiation Gradation

Fig 1.3 Fig 1.4

A Tausug scarf that shows the element of radiation as Food jar (gadur) from Maranao that shows a repetitive
it radiates the design from the central point. elements as it starts from a smaller design below up
to more significant design as it goes upward.

Alternation

Alternation is a type of repetition. The only difference between the repetition what’s repeated
is a pair of different elements, not a single part. It is like two different colors that are always
repeating in the same order. The pattern can be ABCABC or ABABAB.

Fig. 1.5 A Cosmetic box with a beaded band from Mindanao that exhibits the element of alternation as
the design is repeated after another element.

7
Ethnic Designs

Ethnic is a defined category that identifies the people based

on its ancestral, social, cultural or national experience.
Design is formed or arranged for a particular use or effect.
Ethnic design is the selection and arrangement of lines,
forms, textures, and colors of a specific tribal community.
Our ethnic designs come from what our ancestors’ lifestyle
and can be seen through our ornaments, crafts, attires and
even in body tattoos.

The provinces in Luzon uses ethnic designs for weaving

their cloth. Most weavers apply the designs that symbolize
their daily lifestyle. As you can see, the wardrobe of the lady
(photo on the right) contains the repetition and alternation of
different ethnic designs. They use ethnic designs in their
malong, bahag, and dresses for simple occasions.

Weavers in Cordillera Region (Bontoc) learn to weave in

different stages. They started in simple cloth to try weaving
and use simple designs such as fatawil (warp-bands) and
shukyong (arrows). After mastering this level, they will start
making Sinamaki weaving which is the most challenging part. In this part, they will begin doing
designs like tinagtakbo (human figure), minatmata (diamond), and tinitiko (zigzag).

It is a symbol for traditional weavers.

It is a symbol for a fern. This is one of the oldest plants on the

planet. It symbolizes the time of the ancestors.

It refers to a lightning god who is also a messenger of god. It

symbolizes the effort of a man reaching their god.

It symbolizes man.

It symbolizes fish.

It symbolizes a woman

It symbolizes a star. It is believed that the star is the child of the sun
and the moon.

It symbolizes good virtue.

It symbolizes lizard which means wealth and good fortune.

Fig. 1.7 Ethnic designs in Luzon.

Weavers usually use geometric designs in their clothes. Eastern Mindanaoans have strong
weaving tradition. They call their design as dagmay, which tells the story of the weaver and her
community. They use abaca, pinya, and looms for weaving. The people from Lanao del Norte
and Lanao del Sur use the Maranao okir designs for their langkits or malong. For males, they
use designs such as potiok (bud), dapal or raon (leaf), pako (fern), and todi (flower). They also
have a combination of designs like armalis (a combination of todi, dapal and pako) and
magayoda (repetition of pako).

10
.

Fig. 1.8 Langkit designs for male.

For female designs of Okir, they use olan-olan (artificial moon), pialang (square), biangon
(rectangle), katimbuang (diamond), and onsod (zigzag). They also have combined designs like
pinatola (adjacent squares), pinagapat (foursided designs), saragonting (a cross), and binotoon
(starlike). They also have sapak a manding which means a branch of happiness and mayan sa
palao which means mountainlike.

11
As of now, we can still witness the ethnic designs, and it always gives beauty to our country.
We can even see how our ancestors passed their skills to the next succeeding generations.
With this, we should appreciate and embrace ethnic designs.

Lesson 2: Glue Printing of Ethnic Designs
Ethnic designs have a great impact on our history, and we can incorporate ethnic designs in
relief prints. In this lesson, you will explore a relief printing technique using a liquid adhesive.

Learning Targets

In this lesson, you should be able to:

● discover the process of creating relief prints;
● appreciate how relief prints make the work more interesting and harmonious in terms
of the elements involved; and
● prints reliefs with the adequate skills to produce clean prints with a particular design motif
(repeated or alternated).

Warm-up

Glue
‘For you, what are the uses of glue? How important is the glue for you in making arts and
crafts? Which is the most convenient to use, liquid glue or glue gun?

17
Learn about It!
There are different techniques on how to create prints. In
this lesson, we will know how glue and paper that are stuck
together can make good art.

Glue
We think that glue is just a part of art materials, but it can
be handy in many ways. It is a liquid adhesive that can stick
two or more things together. It can be made in many ways
such as plants or animal parts or even oil-based chemicals. Strong glues, on the other hand,
are made from fish bones, rubber or milk.

We can make a simple glue out of flour and water. You can simply mix water and flour in a
container. The measurements of the flour and water are based on how much you need.
Blend the mixture until it becomes thick, but make sure that it is not too thick or too drippy.
After you have the paste, cook it and continuously stir until the mixture bubbles. Remove it
from the pan and let it cool before you use it. Now you can use a brush or finger to apply it on
your craft.

Glue Printing

Glue Printing is a form of Relief Printing. It’s a printing process that involves adding glue to the
object to create the image, a rolling ink over the plate to produce a print. Plates are made of
flat materials such as wood, cardboard or anything that will bond with the glue.

How to Make a Glue Print?

The process of making a glue print is very easy. All you need to have is the main material for
the process which is glue.
1. Make a plate. Draw an outline using a pencil on the surface.
2. Trace the outline with glue.
3. Let it dry.

18
Fig 2.2. The print design is outlined with glue.

Fig 2.3. Dried Glue outline on the carton plate.

4. Use a brayer to roll out the ink to the surface or plate.

5. Place a paper on top of the plate.
6. Apply pressure to transfer the image. The mirror image of the plate is the complete
print or the final result of the artwork.

19
Fig 2.3. An artwork created through glue printing.

Modern Glue Printing

Glue printing is not for liquid adhesive only, but instead, we can also use a glue gun for the
artwork. Hot glue creates a strong plastic stencil that dries easily and great in making a
unique mark as a stamp. Using a glue gun, you can create unique shapes and sizes.

Lesson 3: Cardboard Printing of Cultural
Designs
Cardboard printing is a wonderful relief printing technique. Cardboards or papers are easy to
find, not expensive and workable with simple tools. Let’s see how printmakers use them.

Learning Targets

In this lesson, you should be able to:

● prints reliefs with the adequate skills to produce clean prints with a particular design
motif (repeated or alternated);
● appreciate the ethnic designs in the Philippines; and
● Identify the two kinds of Cardboard Printing.

Warm-up

Cardboard Robot
Describe the image below.

Fig. 3.1 A robot made of cardboard.

24
Learn about It!

We see cardboards as trash after we use it for its

purpose, but we can make an artwork out of it.
Cardboard printing is a relief printing using cardboard
as its primary material.

Cardboard printing is one of the easiest and simplest

ways of making a relief print. Cardboard printing can be
made by either building up (collage cardboards) or
cutting out (cut-out cardboard).

Collage Cardboard Printing

Collage is a piece of art made of different materials stick together. Collage cardboard printing
is combining several cardboards to produce the desired design. In making a collage cardboard
print, follow these steps:

1. Cut a cardboard into different shapes and sizes.

Fig. 3.2 Cardboard cutouts

2. Glue them in a larger piece of cardboard and let them dry.

25
Fig. 3.3 Glue the cutouts to the plate and let them dry.

3. After they are dry, spread ink to the surface.

4. Lay it facedown on paper and press.

5. It may take 2-3 layers and applications of ink to the surface before you get a good print.

26
Fig. 3.5 A collage cardboard printing final product.

Cut-Out Cardboard Printing

Cutting out the design from the cardboard makes the artwork easy. In making a cut-out
cardboard print, you need to have a cutter to form your design.

1. Draw your design on the cardboard using a pencil.

Fig. 3.6 Pencil your design on the cardboard

2. Using a cutter, lightly cut the edges you wish to remove. All spaces removed will not
print.

27
Fig. 3.7 The removed spaces will not print.

3. Spread the paint on the surface and press down on the paper using your hand.
4. Pressing it hard will help you transfer the print thoroughly. You can also use fabric to
apply your design.

Lesson 4: Clay Design Printing
Love molding clays? We all know that we can use clay for molding it to different shapes. Did
you know that we can use clay to print out our pictures? In this lesson, you will know how clay
design printing works.

Learning Targets

In this lesson, you should be able to:

● creates simple, interesting, and harmoniously arranged relief prints from a clay design;
● prints reliefs with adequate skills to produce clean prints with a particular design motif

● enumerate the steps on how to make a clay prints; and
● appreciate clay and how they use through clay printing.

Warm-up

Clay
Describe the picture below.

Fig. 4.1. Pottery making with the use of clay.

33
Learn about It!

Clay has been used for a century. It can be used for

display, medicine, skin care, some of your mother’s
flower vases, and there is also a kind of clay that allows
you to use for fun activities.

Clay

Clay is a natural material made of tiny rocks. It can be molded in many different forms. Wet
clay is much better than mud because it hardens when it dries. We use clay in making
products like pots, plates, bowls, sculptures, and so on. In school, teachers use clay for fun
activities because it also has benefits to the students like enhancing the hand-eye
coordination and engaging the muscles in the arms and hands. It also enhances the fine
motor skills of the students.

Fig. 4.2. Molding of Clay using hands

34
Easy Way to Transfer

Clay printing is a process of transferring such print out like pictures or texts. The process
works best in soft clay. In the wet state, water present in clay helps to transfer easily. No water
or solvent needed. When developing a picture to clay, use the cheap ink, the cheaper, the
better. Water-based ink is advisable.

Process of Clay Printing

1. The first thing to do is to prepare your slab and a photo you want to transfer. The
picture must be in black and white lines and shapes.

Fig. 4.3. Prepare the slab and a black and white image.

2. Next is to lay the image face down so that the ink has contact to the moist slab. Soft
slabs have a high moisture content, so no water additional needed. There will be a
problem if your soft slab has a lot of water.

3. Rub the image into the surface of the clay. Allow the image to have contact with slab for
at least 30 - 60 seconds until the ink bleeds to the surface.

4. To check if the image transferred, peel the back from the corner of the paper. If not, let
it stay for a few more seconds. If so, peel the paper up away from the slab.

35
Fig. 4.4. Peel the paper up away from the slab.

5. Cut the excess slab from your image while it is still soft.

6. Cover it with plastic if you want it to dry slightly. Make sure the plastic will not have
contact with the plastic so that the details will stay.

Lesson 5: Relief Mold Using Found Materials
We usually neglect ugly things in our environment, but we don’t know that it is still useful and
we can use it in any art forms or artwork. In this lesson, we will use materials that are usually
no longer needed but are still useful in creating art.

Learning Targets

In this lesson, you should be able to:

● prints reliefs with adequate skill to produce clean prints with a particular design motif
(repeated or alternated);
● prints reliefs using found materials and discusses the finished artwork;
● creates the relief mold using found materials like hard foam, cardboard shapes glued
on wood, strings and buttons, old screws, and metal parts glued on wood or
cardboard; and
● appreciate the importance of found materials.

Warm-up

Found Materials

You will be given 5 minutes to look around your school and look for things you think you can
use in any artworks. It can be a plastic bottle you need to throw, fallen leaves, or leftover fruits
you ate earlier. Explain to your teacher what you found.

41
Learn about It!

It is fun to walk around, see trash and turn it to treasure.

Found object materials can be used in printing. It allows
you to use your creativity and let you save your junk and
save your money as well. All you just need are found
materials, paint and paper.

Found Materials Printing

Unknown to others, plastic bottles, dry leaves, vegetables, and fruits can be used for your
artwork. You can make a print out of it and helps you to work while saving your budget. How
to work with it?

First is to gather your found objects. You can look around your house and examine things not
intended for art. It’s better to look for variations of shapes that will look good when the
artwork is done. You can also take leaves with different shapes from your garden area.

Fig. 5.1 leaves are good materials for relief printing

42
Next, is to prepare your working area. A clean working area is a must! It will help you organize
your things and work at ease. You can place a newspaper so that you will not worry about the
mess! After preparing, paint the area of the object you want to print. It is better to look for its
unique design so that you will come up with a good found materials print. Adding the element
of Repetition and Alternation is a good effect.

Fig. 5.2 Found materials can be used to print different colorful designs

Relief Mold

Relief mold is a type of sculpture that needs a clay and plaster. This type of sculpture can be
Low Relief, High Relief or Sunken Relief.
Kinds of Relief Example Description

Low Relief Low Relief or bas-relief is a

type of relief sculpture
wherein the design slightly
project from its base and no
need for undercutting the
design or outline. It is also a
complicated art form

High Relief In High Relief, the design
projects at least half or more
of their natural resources.
Some high relief projects are
almost detached from its
background, and it's hard to
figure out if you will look in
front.

How to Make a Relief Mold Using Found Objects

The main materials for making a relief mold using found materials are your toys, blocks,
buttons, keys or anything you find around your house. You also need clay and plaster. In
making a relief mold using found materials:

1. You must have a container where you will pour the plaster. It can be a plastic or a
drinking box.

44
Fig 5.6 Different found objects can be used in creating a relief mold.

2. Prepare your clay. Press the clay inside the box. Make sure the clay covers half of the
box.
3. Once the clay is flatten, you may start pressing the found materials. If you want to
project a name or message, make sure to do it backwards. Don’t forget to remove the
found object before the next step.

Fig 5.7 Press the found objects on a clay

4. Ready your plaster. Make sure that your plaster’s consistency is like a yogurt. Plaster
with more water takes a long time to harden. Pour your plaster in the container where
the clay is. Make a few taps to the box till you see the air bubbles come up to the
surface.

45
Fig 5.8 Make sure that the consistency of your plaster is like yogurt

5. After the plaster is poured, all you need to do is to wait patiently. Wait till the plaster is
cool before removing the box, carefully peel off the clay.

Fig 5.9 Wait til plaster cools

leaves are fresh and dry before you used it. Dry leaves are not advisable because it will snap
or break down once you press or work on it. If your going to use plastic bottles, the lower part
of it has a unique design. Apply any color of paint to the unique design of your found material.
Applying enough pressure makes the design transfer well. Make sure to include ethnic designs
and elements of Repetition and Alternation.

Lesson 6: Exhibit of Ethnic Design Inspired
Relief Prints
Artwork should not just stay inside the box and hidden from the eyes of the people. It should
be taken out, organized, presented, and displayed which we call an exhibit. In this lesson, we
will see the artworks of our printmakers and their exhibits.

Learning Targets

In this lesson, you should be able to:

● display the finished artwork for others to critique and discuss;
● explore the texture of each material and describe its characteristics;
● participate in a school/district exhibit and culminating activity in celebration of the
National Arts Month (February);
● identify the First Filipino printmaker; and
● appreciate the artworks made by Filipino printmaker.

helps you to see and appreciate beautiful artworks. It also
lets you show the world the result of your sleepless nights
making an obra maestra.

Father of Printmakers

Fig. 6.1. Manuel Rodriguez Sr. is the Father of Philippine Printmaking.

We have our own printmakers here in the Philippines. Manuel “Mang Maning” Rodriguez Sr.
was later on known as the Father of Philippine Printmaking. He started doing prints in the
1950s and left the Philippines to pursue his scholarship in printmaking in New York. When he
went back to the Philippines, he started teaching young ones in UST and PWU.

He started the Philippine Association of Printmakers (PAP) in 1968 and currently known as
Association of Pinoyprintmakers (AP). Last May 2018, they celebrated their 50th anniversary
with a large scale of an exhibit at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) entitled as
“Tirada.” Tirada is a term used by Pinoy print markers which means effort and labor, a

53
decisive action. One of the arts in the exhibit is Step on the Sand and Make a Footprint that
encourages the people to step on the sand-filled box and see their footprints. This artwork is
made by Raymundo Albando who received an Honorable Mention by an international jury. It
was also an entry in the International Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo, Japan. This artist has once
said that “A footprint is still a print.”

National Arts Month

Arts are very much renowned in the Philippines. For the honor of a Philippine National Artist,
an annual event every February takes place known as the National Arts Month. It started in
1991 after the former president Corazon Aquino signed the Presidential Proclamation 683.

After the event takes place, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has
been organizing this occasion with the help of public and private agencies. This month-long
celebration is a perfect way to show your love for the arts. To become a skilled and unique
artist, you must begin your journey, as it starts with a burning passion. National Arts Month
reminds us of our Philippine National Artists in Visual Arts to inspire us to become the best
artist we can be.

Some of the famous Philippine National Artists are:

● Fernando Amorsolo (1972)

His trademark is infusing lightning technique into his works, making it sunny and bright.
Amorsolo is also known as the first National Artist.

● Guillermo Tolentino (1973)

A famous artist known for bringing The Bonifacio Monument into life. He designed the
seal of the Republic of the Philippines and the Ramon Magsaysay Awards’ gold and
bronze medals.

● Napoleon Abueva (1976)

He is the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture, making him the youngest recipient of
the National Artist Award.
