CVL 407 STRUCTURE III - ASSIGNMENT # 1 Part C
This assignment is to be submitted to the D2L folder by Friday Feb 16th,
11th, 4pm
2:30 pm.
Please solve the following problems
PROBLEM 1C (Covered in Lecture 1)
Figure 1C shows a plan view of a reinforced concrete floor in a residential building. The floor system consists
of a 250 mm floor slab supported by 350 mm × 600 mm floor beams. The floor supports its own weight and a
superimposed dead load of 0.30 kPa, in addition to the applied live load. The exterior beams support 200 mm
brick wall (one side plastered) while the interior beams support 100 mm brick wall (both sides plastered).
Assume 3 m floor height.
It is required to:
a) Calculate the total service and ultimate load supported by column A.
b) Calculate the total service and ultimate load of the entire floor.
c) Determine the dead and live loads supported by the beam B1
d) Assume the D =20kN/m and L=10kN/m and employ the approximate method (Table 1.18 of the Concrete
handbook) to sketch the max bending moment and shear force of the beam.
e) Design the beam cross section to resist the maximum negative moment above the supports

PROBLEM 2C (Covered in Lecture 1/2)
For the beam shown in Figure 3C, use Wd=46 kN/m, WL=22 kN/m to sketch the maximum
bending moment diagram. Determine the maximum moment at the midspan and above left
support at the marked sections.

PROBLEM 3C (Covered in Lecture 3)
Figure 3C shows a cross section of a rectangular RC beam. The yield strength of the steel fy is
400 Mpa and compressive strength of the concrete fc’ is 30 Mpa. The following are required:
(i) Evaluate the resisting moment Mr of the beam section using section analysis method.
(ii) Re-evaluate the resisting moment Mr using Table 2.1 of the Concrete Handbook (You
must check if As<Asb or ρ<ρb) and compare your answer with Mr from (i)
(iii) If the reinforcement is changed to 10M25, comment on the section safety according to
A23.3 (Note that the reinforcement in this case needs to be placed over 2 rows- Do not
calculate Mr).
(iv) Evaluate the maximum amount of steel allowed in this section (assume As=Asb) and
determine the resisting moment Mr in this case.

PROBLEM 4C (Covered in Lecture 2/3)
Figure 4C shows a simple beam with a span of 12 m that supports its own weight in addition
to a super imposed DL of 20 kN/m and a LL of 20kN/m. It is required to
(i) Assume a cross section of the beam (h, b)
(ii) Evaluate the ultimate factored load the beam would carry and calculate the ultimate
factored moment Mf
(iii) Determine the amount of reinforcement As required for the section to resist Mr using
section analysis method. Sketch the cross section with the chosen rebars
(iv) Recalculate the required reinforcement using Table 2.1 of the Concrete Handbook
(v) If the floor height is 3400 mm and minimum clear depth of the floor is limited to 2700
mm (i.e maximum beam height is 700 mm). Use section analysis and assume As=Asb
to determine the minimum beam width that can safely support the beam loads (neglect
the change in the beam own weight due to the change in the beam cross section).
Sketch your new design and compare the amount of material (i.e. area of concrete and
area of steel) to your solution in (iii).

PROBLEM 5C (Covered in Lecture 2/3)
Figure 6C shows a cantilever beam with a span of 6.0 m that supports its own weight in
addition to a super imposed DL of 20 kN/m and a LL of 20kN/m. It is required to:
(i) Assume a cross section of the beam (h, b)
(ii) Evaluate the ultimate factored load the beam carries and calculate the ultimate
factored moment Mf
(iii) Determine the amount of reinforcement the beam needs to resist the factored
moment Mf and sketch the section with reinforcement (you can use section
analysis or Table 2.1 of the concrete hand book). Use fc’=30 MPa and fy=400
MPa.
Note that the maximum bending moment in the cantilever equals to -Wult.L2/2 and
occurs at the fixation. This maximum moment (is negative) causing a tension on the
upper face of the concrete section. This would flip the location of the rebars as
compared to the location for a simple beam – see section A, without affecting the
calculation procedure (i.e. the negative sign of the moment Mf should be taken away
from the calculation procedure of As).
