From foreign publications it is known that over the past


decades, ammonium perchlorate (AP) has been used as
an oxidizer for engine charges on mixed solid rocket fuel
(MSRP), which is supplied to solid rocket fuel
manufacturing plants in accordance with the requirements
regarding permissible pollution and humidity and particle
size. To regulate the burning rate, PCA with particles
ranging in size from 0.5 to 1000 microns is used. The
ratio of oxidizer particles in size regulates the
technological, mechanical and ballistic characteristics of
the fuel. At the SRT manufacturing enterprises, for the
preparation of powdered mixtures based on PCA with a
given ratio of various fractions, the following operations
are provided: receiving, grinding PCA into various
fractions, dosing fractions and various additives, mixing,
packing the finished mixture into containers and sending
them to a mixing unit for preparing fuel the mass of SRT
and the manufacture of charges from it. In the analytical
review No. 14 (121) for 1982, “Preparation of ammonium
perchlorate at SRT plants” (based on materials from the
open foreign press for 1965-1982, GONTI-0409-), a
typical scheme for the preparation of PCA is shown. To
obtain mixtures based on PCA, several fractions are
used: a large fraction with a particle size of 200-400
microns and a small fraction with a particle size of 7 to 15
microns. In some cases, to regulate the burning rate, PCA
with a particle size of up to 1000 microns and finely
ground PCA with a particle size of less than 5 microns are
used. To improve the technological properties of PCA,
various anti-caking additives are used, for example
calcium phosphate, or various water-repellent coatings
applied to the surface of PCA particles. Large fractions
are usually produced in factories that produce PCA and
are considered standard. Medium, fine and fine grinding
fractions are made from screenings of standard fractions
at STRT manufacturing plants.

The equipment used for grinding at US factories (by


Thiokol, Aerojet, etc.) consists of hammer mills of various
designs. For example, the working elements of the ISH
and GDL mills are hammers and a sieve, and the working
elements of the Raymond vertical mill are hammers and
an air classifier.

which in the prototype is called a collector 4, transferring
the PCA to receivers 5. Receivers 5 are equipped with
feeders 9, each of which is a feeder for the corresponding
chopper . Grinder 6 is designed to obtain a medium
fraction (100-200 microns), grinder 7 to obtain a fine
fraction (7-15 microns) and grinder 8 to obtain a fine
grinding fraction (<5 microns). The installation also
includes pneumatic transport that transfers crushed PCA
from collectors 4 and cyclone 10 to hopper dispensers 11,
with which fractions in a given ratio are dosed into a
fraction mixer 12. The finished mixture of PCA fractions
from the mixer is fed into a sifter 13 and then into a
container 14 for transporting the mixture to the phase of
preparing the SRT fuel mass and manufacturing charges.

The disadvantages of the prototype include the following:

- the presence in the working areas of grinders (hammer


mills) of a large number of metal-to-metal friction pairs
with uncontrolled parameters for gaps, pressure and
speeds, which is not safe when working with such a
mechanically sensitive material as PCA;

- rapid wear of the working elements of grinders


(hammers, beaters, rods, gratings). The difficulty of
replacing wearing elements, significant operating costs
(P.M. Sidenko. Grinding in the chemical industry. M.:
“Khimiya”, 1977);

- the impossibility of obtaining an even finer fraction using


such grinders, namely with a particle size of 0.5...2.0
microns. The need to obtain such an ultrafine fraction is
dictated by the requirements to further improve the
energy characteristics of SRT.

The technical objective of the proposed invention is to


increase the safety of the process of grinding PCA
through the use of grinders that do not have friction pairs
in the grinding zone, reduce operating costs, expand the
possibilities for increasing the energy properties of CRT
by obtaining a fine fraction with particle sizes from 0.5 to
2.0 µm.

The technical result is achieved due to the fact that the

The proposed grinders for obtaining medium and fine


fractions do not have metal-to-metal friction pairs and
impact metal elements in the grinding zone; grinding
occurs in a high-speed flow of carrier air due to the
collision of particles with each other and on sequentially
installed grinding plates. Fine grinding is carried out in a
bead mill in a liquid carrier medium by repeatedly
pumping a suspension of the original PCA in the carrier
through the dispersion zone, where the grinding bodies
are glass beads.

The installation for preparing a powder mixture based on


ammonium perchlorate (AP), used as an oxidizer to
charge a solid fuel rocket engine (Fig. 2), contains two
different grinders for obtaining different fractions of PCA:
grinder 6 for obtaining from the original PCA middle
fraction and grinder 7 to obtain a fine fraction from the
original PCA.

The grinder 6, according to the principle of operation, is a


gas-jet chamber jet-vortex mill, where the initial PCA from
container 1 is loaded into the receiver 5 and is fed into the
air flow by the feeder 9, accelerates to the required
speed, and enters the grinder chamber 6. PCA particles
collide with each other and with walls of the chamber, are
crushed, the crushed particles are picked up by the air
escaping through the center of the chamber and then
deposited in a group of cyclones 57, 58. The precipitated
powder is continuously discharged into the screw 30 by

proposed installation has a particle size of 20...30
microns.

Grinder 7 is a gas-jet impact mill, the design of which


includes several sequentially installed grinding chambers
connected to each other by accelerating pipes. Inside
each chamber, grinding plates are installed perpendicular
to the flow of the dust-air mixture entering for grinding,
hitting which the initial powder is sequentially crushed,
accelerating in the accelerating pipes. The initial PCA
from container 1 enters the supply hopper-feeder 2, from
which, using a dispenser 15, a specified amount of PCA
is loaded into the mixer 16. The required amount of
powdered technological additives is supplied to the same
mixer using dispenser 17. After mixing the PCA with
additives, this mixture is unloaded into the receiver 5 of
the grinder 7. Then the shutters 52 and 75 are opened,
the vacuum pump 24 is turned on, the feeder 9 is turned

stream of dried air, which is supplied to the grinder
through a pipeline through a shutter 75. The
sedimentation of the finished fine fraction occurs in
cyclones 55 and 56. The final purification of the air after
the powder is separated from it occurs in a wet filter 23
and then the purified air is released into the atmosphere
by a vacuum pump 24. The crushed fraction from the
cyclone 55 is fed through the sluice gate 31 into the
transport screw 30. From the cyclone 56, the additional
fine fraction captured by the sluice gates 69 and 31 is
also fed into the screw 30. The fine fraction thus obtained
has a particle size of 4...6 μm.

In some cases, hydrophobizing liquids such as


methyltrichlorosilane are used as an anti-caking agent
when grinding fine fractions. In this case, during grinding
with carrier air, vapors of this liquid are supplied to the
grinding path. To do this, the liquid is supplied to the
installation from the supply tank 18 by the pump 19 to the
evaporator 20, where it is converted into steam in a
stream of heated air and, with the shutter 74 open (the
shutter 75 is closed), enters the grinding path along with
air and the original powder from the feeder 9. When In

hydrophobic film manages to cover only the most active
surfaces, newly formed after each collision of a particle
with the next grinding plate. Such a coating makes it
possible for some time to restrain the agglomeration of
these particles among themselves, but this is not enough
to form a stable hydrophobic film on each particle.
Therefore, in the proposed installation, special water-
repellent mixers are used, in which the particles of
crushed material are finally coated with a hydrophobic
film. Since this is a rather long (up to 40 minutes) periodic
process, to avoid downtime of the grinder 7, two parallel
installed water-repellent mixers 26 and 33 are mounted in
the installation. Loading of crushed powder from cyclones
10 and 21 is carried out into the water-repellent mixers
alternately using a reversible screw feeder 25 with two
valves, which also open alternately above the mixer
where the next portion of crushed powder from grinder 7
arrives. Hydrophobization in hydrophobizer mixers (MH)
is carried out as follows. After collecting a given amount
of crushed powder into the SG 26, the valve above it

this time a portion of powder is collected into the mixer 33
to carry out the hydrophobization operation. The
reversible feeder 25 switches to loading the powder into
the mixer 26, and the hydrophobization operation begins

To obtain a fine fraction with a particle size of 0.5...2.0


microns from the original PCA, a technological scheme is

The grinder 8 for obtaining a fine fraction from the initial


PCA is a bead mill, in which grinding is carried out in a
liquid inert medium using small glass beads with a
diameter of 1.6...2.0 mm. The balls, under the influence of
a rotating rotor, move at high speed in the working
volume of the mill, due to which the PCA particles
entering the mill are crushed. Before grinding, a
suspension of the original powder in a carrier is prepared
in mixer 42. The liquid carrier is first loaded into it from
measuring tank 41, then the original PCA from container
40. The finished suspension is pumped into the operating
chopper 8 by pump 43 through an open shutter 54. When
the chopper 8 is filled to the drain pipe, there is a
continuous flow of the suspension back into the mixer 42.
Thus, in the circulation mode, the suspension is pumped
through the grinder 8 for a certain time required to obtain
a PCA fraction with a particle size of 0.5...2.0 microns.
After which the shutter 53 opens, the shutter 54 closes
and the suspension from the stirrer 42 is fed by pump 43
through a filter system 44 into the stirrer 45 to thicken the
suspension. In the stirrer 45, part of the carrier is distilled
off by heating, and then this thickened suspension is
supplied by pump 46 to the volumetric mixer 47 for the
final removal of the carrier from the powder. Mixer 47 is
heated; a condensed suspension is supplied into it in a
sprayed form. In this case, the carrier evaporates and is
removed from the mixer. At this time, the mixer body 47

As a result of the use in the proposed installation of


grinders that do not have metal-to-metal friction pairs in
the grinding zones and the impact of metal elements on
the crushed material, the occurrence of emergency
situations when grinding PCA is eliminated, i.e. the safety
of the grinding process is increased. It has become
possible to produce smaller fractions of the entire range
of particle sizes from medium to fine, which will improve
the energy properties of SRT. Wear of the working parts
of the shredders is practically eliminated, which will
reduce the costs of operating the shredders.

Design documentation for all equipment of the installation


has been developed, the main equipment has been
manufactured. The tests of grinders and water-repellent
mixers confirmed their design characteristics.

In 2008, it is planned to put the entire plant into


commercial operation.
