1 Gather the equipment


2 Explain the procedure to the patient
3 First provider provides manual neutral in-line stabilization of the
patient’s head and neck
4 Second provider uses his or her fingers to measure the patient’s
neck between the patient’s lower jaw and shoulder
5 Second provider uses this measurement to select a proper sized
collar or adjustable collar to the correct size
6 If an adjustable collar is utilized, make sure the collar is locked into
proper size
7 The second provider applies the properly sized collar while the first
provider continues to maintain the neutral in-line head and neck
stabilization
8 After applying and securing the cervical collar, manual in-line
stabilization of the head and neck is maintained until the patient is
secured to an immobilization device.
9 Document the procedure
