Driveability Diag Part1

This document provides a summary of a presentation on driveability diagnostics for automatic transmissions. It discusses starting with the customer complaint, gathering codes and test drive data. Key steps include fluid checks, electrical system checks, learning transmission theory and operation, different types of shifts, and using pressure and speed sensor testing. The goal is to determine what is working properly to narrow down the potential problem. Questions are encouraged throughout.

True diagnostics is knowing what
components are working properly
and what components are NOT .

After we know what is working correctly, we

then can narrow down what the problem can
be.
Where do we start?
Always Start with
 What is the complaint?
 Gather and record ALL codes
 Look at freeze frame data
 Record Fuel Trims
 Test drive to confirm complaint
Questions to Ask Yourself
• Is it temperature related?
• Does engine loads effect the complaint?
• One particular shift or engagement?
• Missing shifts or lock‐up?
• Shift feel?
• Shift timing?
Now Clear Codes and Retest
 Did you confirm the complaint?
 Ask yourself the same questions.
 What codes reset and when?
Basic Fluid Checks
• Full of fluid?
• Check at the correct temperatures.
• Correct fluid? Additives used?
• Leaks? Color? Smell?
• Metal, debris in fluid?
Battery, Charging and Electrical
• State of charge; 12.6 ‐12.5 volts is good
• Charging Voltage; around 14 V when loaded
• Cranking voltage; 9.5 volts or more
• Voltage Drop; most .1 volt or less
• AC Volts; .5 AC volts or less
• Connectors and wiring
Learn Theory and Operation
• What clutches are on and when?
• What solenoid does what and when?
• What is the operation in each range?
• What inputs and outputs are used? Speed
sensor, trans range switch, MAF, MAP, ABS,
temperature sensors, 4X4 switches and many more.
Type of Shift
Synchronized shift is when one clutch releases and
another comes on to complete the shift.
• Clutch clearance is very critical
• Friction type or amount of clutch and steel plates
should not be changed.
• OE fluids are important
• Flare shifts, bumpy shifts, binds and flare bang
shifts are a common issue with this style of shift.

Non Synchronous Shifts
When one clutch or band comes on to complete the
gear change when no other clutch is released.

Release / Apply Shifts

This is similar to a synchronous but it is built into
the transmission servo (4L60E).
When a band releases and a clutch is applied
and is done with the servo.

Pressure Testing
• Test line pressure in all ranges, record info.
• Test stall pressure in all ranges, record info.
• Preform EPC test with scanner, record info.
• Test cold and hot if possible.
• Test while driving.
• Compare ports. Line pressure vs clutch
pack to find leaks.
(PM)Speed Sensors

Permanent Magnet (AC Generator) Speed Sensor

• Has one ground wire and a signal wire.
• Produces AC volts related to speed.
• Produces a sine wave (saw tooth).
Permanent Magnet Speed Sensor Testing

What to look for?

• Symmetrical Shape, Consistent and Clean
Pattern
• Amplitude (up and down voltage)
Hall Effect Speed Sensor

Three wire sensor ‐ Power / Ground / Signal

• Power supply usually 5, 8 or 12 volts
• Produces a square wave signal
• Does not vary in voltage
Hall Effect Wave Pattern

What are we looking for?

• Shape, square corners
• Consistent Amplitude (up and down voltage)
• Frequency or spacing
Magneto‐Resistive Speed Sensor

• Two wire / requires power and ground

• Produces square wave like Hall effects
• Output is 7‐14 mA
Magneto‐Resistive Speed Sensor

What are we looking for?

• Shape, square corners
• Consistent Amplitude (up and down voltage)
• Frequency or spacing
