Dependent and Independent Variable LP

This lesson plan is for Grade 8 students and covers dependent and independent variables. The objectives are for students to define, determine, and appreciate dependent and independent variables in functions. Examples of dependent and independent variable relationships will be discussed, such as student performance and grades, power consumption and electric bills, and rainfall and class suspensions. Students will practice identifying the dependent and independent variables in equations and word problems. For assessment, students will solve problems finding values of dependent variables and identify the dependent and independent variables in science experiment descriptions. The assignment is for students to provide a situation to determine these variables and define domain and range.

LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 8
DATE: January 04, 2024
GRADE and SECTION: Grade- 8 Grapes 2:00-3:00 P.M
Grade-8 Apple 3:00-4:00 P.M

I. OBJECTIVES
Given several exercises, the Grade 8 students are expected to do the following with at least 75% level
of proficiency.
a. Define dependent and independent variables.
b. Determine the dependent and independent variables.
c. Appreciate new understanding on dependent and independent variables of a given function
II. SUBJECT MATTER
a. Topic: Dependent and Independent Variables
b. Materials: laptop, LCD projector
c. Reference: TG pages 172 - 173
LM pages 155 – 156

III. PROCEDURE
A. Preliminaries
1. Greetings
2. Arranging chairs, picking up of dirt
3. Checking of attendance
4. Review

Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
 Can you live without your parents?
 Who among you lives with their parents?
 Therefore, are you dependent or independent individual?
2. Teaching/Discussion
 If you study hard, what will happen?
 If you spend much of your allowance, what will happen?
 If you eat much, what will happen?
 If you travelled long distance, what will happen?

Example:
1. The performance of a student and his grade in a subject.
2. The power consumption and electric bill of a household
3. The chance of class suspension and the amount of rainfall
4. The prize and the size of a pair of shoes in the department store.
In mathematical equation, like for example, the linear function,
y  3x  5 . If x=1, what will be the value of y? If x=0, what is y? If x=1, what is y?
In these cases, which are the dependent and independent variables?

3. Analysis
 What is dependent variable?
 What is independent variable?
 How can you differentiate the dependent and independent variable?
4. Abstraction
Dependent variable is a mathematical variable whose value is determined by that of one or
more other variables in a function. It depends on the independent variable. Independent
variable is a mathematical variable that is independent on the other variables in an expression
or function and whose value determines one or more of the values of the other variables. It
controls the dependent variable.
The variable x is considered the independent variable because any value could be assigned
to it. However, the variable y is the dependent variable because its value depends on the value
of x.
5. Application
Identify the independent and dependent variables on the following statements.
1. Cost of chicken and its weight
2. income of a worker and number of hours of work
3. perimeter of a square and its side

6. Assessment

1. y=f(x)=3x+2
find (f1) and f(2)?
2. Ana makes a salad at a salad bar. The cost of the salad is calculated according
to its weight.
3. Ana and Mary are working on a science experiment for school. They found
that the more the ice they add to a bucket of water the cooler the temperature
of the water is.

IV. ASSIGNMENT
1. Follow Up:
Give a situation that can help you determine the dependent and independent variables.
2. Study:
Define: 1. Domain
2. Range
