50 BOOKS.SIGNED 12"SINGLES & T SHIRTS
TO BE WON!
• It's the book they tried to ban. And Suddenly There
Came A Bang! is the title of this slim volume. Frankie
Goes To Hollywood is what it's all about and it's rather
cheeky. As well as (sort of) telling the history of
Frankie, there are intimate interviews with Ped,
Nasher, Holly, Paul and Mark and dozens of
photographs. And there's a huge double-sided poster
of the group. Pity we haven't got 50 of them to give
away, eh? Well, you're in luck 'cause that's what we
have got, chums.
And there’s more.
We've also acquired 50 SIGNED copies of the
“Welcome To The Pleasuredome" 12” and 50 official
Frankie tour t-shirts just to make this a bit of a Frankly
Frantastic (That’s quite enough of that, thank you -
Ed.) competition. So heeeeeeere's a question:
When Frankie Goes To Hollywood toured America
last year they took an extra guitarist with them. He’s
Mark O'Toole's brother but what is his name? Is it
a) Kevin, b) Jed, c) Pete or d) Sean?
Answers on postcards or backs of envelopes to:
Smash Hits Frankie Competition, 14 Holkham
Road, Orton Southgate, Peterborough PE2 OYJ. April
25 is the deadline.
And suddenly you could have a book, 12" and t-shirt

Me’’ - but it’s live that they’ve earned their
reputation. The whole performance, as with
everything about The Pogues, is jerribly old-
is far removed from an
i vou could get. There’s
_-The Poguesareilli e illuminated by the
grand total of eight lights. And the ba
wear any shiny suits or designer clothes - in
fact they look a bit of a state. Not that anyone
in the audience cares. They’re too busy
jigging, reeling, pogoing, linking hands in
circles and doing just about every dance
'"rheactual music? Well, The Pogues only
really have two songs. There’s the fast happy
one where Jem plucks the banjo furiously, the
others holler “yee-aah” or “yip-yi-ay”, and the
crowd goes extremely bonkers. And there’s the
dirge, which is long, repetitive and rather sad
and during which people sit on others’
shoulders or wave flags from side to side. The
only real variety comes during one of the fast
second run through their anthemic “Boys
From The County Hell (Lend Me Ten Pounds
And I’ll Buy You A Drink)” and their epic dirge
“The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”, they’re
,_,_,_singing
songs and chanting “Celtic” and “Ireland”.
Backstage The Pogues dry off and grab
another beer. Elvis Costello sits quietly in th
corner talking to no-one. Shane looks a bit
glum. “I've got a terrible stomach ache,” he
explains, holding the affected region. “I migl
have to do something drastic like give up
drinking.” Then he takes another swig from I
can of lager and saunters off to enjoy what’s
left of St Patrick's Day.
