ME19301 – Engineering Thermodynamics
Assignment 2
Date of Submission: 10. 09. 2023
Part A
1. State Clausius’s statement for second law of thermodynamics
2. List the reasons for irreversibility.
3. Define PMM I.
4. A reversible heat engine operates between a source at 800 K and sink at 400 K.
what is the least rate of heat rejection per kW network output of the engine?
5. State Kelvin Plank’s statement for second law of thermodynamics
6. State Carnot theorem
7. Define PMM II.
8. A reversible heat engine operates between a source at 8000 C and sink at 300 C.
what is the least rate of heat rejection per kW network output of the engine?
9. A young scientist invites you to demonstrate his new heat engine that will
produce 15 kW power by using the diesel exhaust gas with 30 kJ/s of heat at
250°C as source and the nearby coldwater stream at 15°C as sink. Would you
attend the same? Why?
10. A self-motivated inventor claims to have developed a heat pump to deliver 18
kW of heat at 288 K with the help of 2 kW of energy by extracting heat from
surrounding at 253 K. Validate the claim with proper reasoning.
11. A house requires 2 x 105kJ/h of heating in winter. A heat pump is used to absorb
heat from cold outside air and send the heat to the house. Work required to
operate the heat pump is 3 x 104 kJ/h. Determine
12. The heat absorbed from outside
13. Coefficient of Performance.
14. Two Carnot heat engines operate in series between 300 K and 1800 K. If the thermal
efficiencies of both the engines are same, determine the intermediate temperature and
their efficiency.
15. 1130 kJ of heat is supplied to an engine from a source at 292 . The engines reject
heat to a sink at 12 . From which of the following cycles represent a reversible,
irreversible or an impossible result:
i. 285 kJ of heat is rejected
ii. 855 kJ of heat is rejected
iii. 570 kJ of heat is rejected
16. An engine is supplied with 1120 kJ/s of heat. The source and sink temperature are
maintained at 560 and 280 . determine whether the following cases represent the
reversible, irreversible or impossible heat engines
i. 108 kW of heat rejected
ii. 560 kW of heat rejected
iii. 900 kW of heat rejected
17. One kg of water at 0°C is brought into contact with a heat reservoir at 90°C. When the
water has reached 90°C, find :
i. Entropy change of water ;
ii. Entropy change of the heat reservoir ;
iii. Entropy change of the universe.
18. 1 kg of ice at – 5°C is exposed to the atmosphere which is at 25°C. The ice melts and
comes into thermal equilibrium..
i. Entropy change of water ;
ii. Entropy change of the heat reservoir ;
iii. Entropy change of the universe.
19. A 5 kg block of copper at 100 °C is submerged in 10 kg of water at 10 °C and after a
period of time, equilibrium is established. If the container is insulated, calculate the
entropy change of the copper, water and universe. Cp of copper and water are 0.393
kJ/kg K and 4.187 kJ/kg K
20. Two reversible heat engines A and B are arranged in series. Engine A rejects heat
directly to engine B, receives 200kJ at a temperature of 421 from a hot source,
while engine B is in communication with cold sink of 4.4 . If the work output of A is
twice that of B, find
i. The intermediate temperatures between A and B
ii. The efficiency of each engine.
iii. The heat rejected to the cold sink
21. 3 kg of water at 80°C is mixed with 4 kg of water at 15°C in an isolated system.
Calculate the change of entropy due to mixing process.
22. An iron cube at a temperature of 400°C is dropped into an insulated bath containing
10 kg water at 25°C. The water finally reaches a temperature of 50°C at steady state.
Given that the specific heat of water is equal to 4186 J/kg K. Find the entropy changes
for the iron cube and the water. Is the process reversible? If so why?
