Interval Estimation

A random sample of 10 fish lengths from a pond were measured and found to have a mean length of 9.94 cm. Given the fish lengths have a normal distribution with variance of 4, a 95% confidence interval for the mean length of all fish in the pond was calculated to be 8.70 to 11.18 cm. Additionally, a random sample of 68 IQ test scores that have a normal distribution with an unknown mean (μ) and variance (σ2) was taken. The 98% confidence interval for the sample mean was calculated to be 88.2 to 102.8. From this, the sample mean was determined to be 95.5 and σ was determined to be 25.88. Using these values, a

Interval estimation

1. A random sample of 10 fishes are caught from a pond and its length, in cm, were measured.
The results are as follows: 9.1 ,9.1 , 11.3, 10.7 ,9.8 , 10.2 , 10.1 ,9.7 ,9.9 and 9.5 . The lengths
of fishes in the pond are normally distributed with variance 4 . Find a 95% symmetrical
confidence interval for the mean lengths of all the fishes in the pond.

Let x̄ be the mean length of the sample,

x̄ = ∑x / n

= (9.1 + 9.1 + 11.3 + 10.7 + 9.8 +10.2 + 10.1 + 9.7 + 9.9 + 9.5 ) / 10
= 9.94 cm

For a 95% symmetrical confidence interval ,

95% = (1- α ) 100%
1 – α = 0.95
Α = 0.05
Q=α/2
= 0.025

z
From the standardized normal table , α/2 = 0.025 z
= 1.96

Given that σ2 =4 , hence σ =2

And n=10

z
Therefore , a 95% symmetrical confidence interval = ( x̄ ± α/2 (σ/√N) )

= ( 9.94 ± (1.96 ) (2/√10)

= ( 9.94 ± 1.24 )

= (8.70 , 11.18 )

2. The scores of an IQ test is known have a normal distribution with mean µ and variance
σ 2.
A random sample scores of 68 people who have taken the IQ test were selected and
a 98 % symmetrical confidence interval worked to be ( 88.2 , 102.8 ) . Find the mean sample

x̄ and σ . Hence , find a 92 % symmetrical confidence interval for µ.

For a 98% symmetrical confidence interval ,
98% = (1- α ) 100%
1 – α = 0.98
Α = 0.02
Q=α/2
= 0.001

z
From the standardized normal table , α/2 = 0.001 z
= 2.326

The 98 % symmetrical confidence interval for the mean scores of the IQ test is ( x̄ ±

zα/2 (σ/√N) )
z
Therefore , ( x̄ - α/2 (σ/√N) ) = ( x̄ - (2.326) (σ/√68) ) = 88.2 ------- 1

z
And ( x̄ + α/2 (σ/√N) ) = ( x̄ + (2.326) (σ/√68) ) = 102.8 ------------- 2

2+1: 2 x̄ = 191.0

Therefore x̄ = 95.5

2–1: [2 (2.326) (σ/√68)] = 14.6

σ = /√68(14.6) / 2(2.326)

= 25.88

For a 92% symmterial confidence interval ,

98% = (1- α ) 100%

1 – α = 0.98
Α = 0.02
Q=α/2
= 0.001
