Look and observe the pictures on the right. On a piece of paper, note down the details, the figures, or
anything else that you notice about the picture. Take a picture of your work and upload to our online platform.
What can you see on the picture? What do you think is the celebration about? What can you say about the
designs and the symbols used? How do they use lines and shapes?
On the picture, you can see that the people are performing a street dance and their costumes are very
colorful. It has something to do with the motifs of Visayas.
               Let’s Study This!
The design of cultural communities varies with their celebration. One should learn to appreciate the rich
cultural heritage of this country. The Visayan region is famous for their festival and street dancing commemorating
certain historical events that show off distinct designs that symbolize the communities they belong to.
We all know that Visayas is rich in historical events. One great example is the story between Lapu-Lapu and
Magellan that happened in Mactan.
Cultural Communities in the Visayas Region
                             ATI
They are an ethnic group in the Visayas. Their small
numbers are principally concentrated in the islands of
Boracay, Panay and Negros. They are genetically related
to other groups in the Philippines such as the Aeta pf
Luzon, the Batak of Palawan, and the Mamanwa of
                       Mindanao.
                (Their clothing/attire is very
              colorful. There are different lines
                   and shapes in designs.)
                           WARAY
The Waray people are a subgroup of the Visayan people
whose primary language is the Waray language which is
native to the islands of Samar, Leyte and Biliran. They are
famous for their weaving of banig made from dyed leaves.
                 They are wearing an attire
with a combination of color red and purple.
You can also see that the pattern used was zigzag lines in
                         the clothing.
                They are also wearing ‘bahag’
or the big scarf. Zigzag lines and triangles
shapes are used in it as the design or motif.
                         PINTADOS
It is the term used to describe he tattooed indigenous
Visayan people. They were found on the islands of Cebu,
Bohol, eastern part of Negros, Samar and Leyte.
The word Pintados means “painted”. It refers to the men
known for their tattoo art which often covers most of their
                           bodies.
They paint it on the skins of humans.
There are many designs tattooed on them. Triangles and
diagonal lines are visible on their skin.
Note: There must be a certain historical event and to commemorate it, it is shown thru the motifs or thru the festival
and dance.
