PREFACE

This instructional module aims to guide learners from the Senior High School
Program in acquiring basic knowledge, concepts and skills in research. Specifically, this
module also provides activities for students taking up Practical Research II. All of the
constructs printed hereto were compliant to the K to 12 Curriculum of the Department of
Education, with the current integration of the Most Essential Learning Competencies or
MELCs.

Parts of Instructional Module

What I need to know: refers to the learning objectives of the lesson. This helps the learner to
have clear expectations on what he will learn and do that are related to the lesson.

What I know: is part of the module that identifies the pre-knowledge of the learner with
regards to a certain topic. Also reviews the learner about the previous topic he had learned.

What’s in: presents the lecture guide of the lesson with the essential concept, principles and
formulas. Examples are provided for better understanding.

What’s new: is the given set of activities in various forms that must be accomplished by the
learner in relation to the topic discussed in “what’s in”.

What is it: prompts the learner to analyze and interpret his answers from the first activities
accomplished or from another exercise.

What’s more: is where the learner has to follow and answer some enrichment activities in
order to expand his critical-thinking skills.

What I can do: the application part of the lesson where the student relates the concepts and
principles with the actual setting and the real environment.

Assessment: measures and evaluates the level of mastery of knowledge and skills acquired
by each individual learner who uses this module.

Additional Activities: can be given to maximize the understanding and application of

knowledge of a certain topic written in this module

References: cites the resources of this module and formalizes its documentation.

Name: _________________________ Grade and Section: _____________ Score: _________

What I need to know : At the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. Recall the differences between quantitative and qualitative research, the various types
of research and variables.
2. Identify researchability of a topic terms in research.
3. Give the importance of quantitative research in different fields and human activities.

What I know: Recall your terms in research from previous lessons by answering the
crossword puzzle below:

9. The level of satisfaction of customers and shoppers of Vista Mall Taguig in terms of

convenience, cleanliness, and waiting time____ ____

10. Explaining corruption in the Philippine government____ ____

Types of Variables: Recall and identify the various types of research variables by
encircling the appropriate words inside the Word Search.

What’s in: Importance of Quantitative Research

The importance of quantitative research lies greatly in the production of results that
should reflect precise measurement and an in-depth analysis of data. It is also useful in

6|K C G
obtaining understanding of people, things, places, and events in many places. This means that
quantitative research aims to reach a more accurate values, measurement, and meaning of the
objects or subjects of the study in relation to a specific topic investigated by the researcher.
There must be no researcher bias in formulating analysis and interpretation of the data
because of the mathematical nature of the information; in contrast to the qualitative research
type that can partially base meanings of the collected data subjectively by the researcher.
Quantitative research is statistically treated, therefore the researcher must use standardized
measuring instruments or tools to avoid inaccuracy of his data analyses. Such instruments
must undergo intensive and critical evaluation, validation, and tests before the actual
collection of the data. This makes quantitative research objective, whether it is a social or
experimental type of research. Quantitative research becomes more effective in investigating
the general trait, characteristic, or behavior of a certain individual or group of people
specially regarding with the extent of relationship of their behavior or traits and the causes of
variations in their characteristics (Mujis, 2011; Gray, 2012 as cited by Baraceros, 2016).
Example of its importance is discovering new ways of plating crops in many agricultural
lands in the Philippines.

What’s new: Complete the web diagram below by supplying the spaces
with the different sectors and industries of our society you think can be benefited by
quantitative research. For example: Agriculture and Education. Then, you must branch off
each large category based on the diagram with more specific field of research.

7|K C G
What is it: Briefly explain inside the balloon your reasons why you included the
categories and subcategories on the web diagram above.

8|K C G
What’s more: From the web diagram above, choose one subcategory you wrote and
explain the significance or importance of quantitative research in that field.

Generalization: Complete the given common words that describe the importance
and characteristics of QT research by assigning letters in the mnemonics:

WORD HINTS
Q_____T_ Refers to measure or value
U_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ There is a global standard
A_______ Precise and near to true value
N______ Refers to the science of the environment
T______L Not a falsehood
I_________ Can be put in the market
T______ Evaluating, rating, assessing
A_________N Can be materialized or actualized in a certain field or industry
TE_______ Very specific, lawful, logical, categorized, and detailed
I________VE Can be incorporated to other fields
V_ _ _ _ Very important and beneficial
E__L____VE Measuring and assessing
R_____A_ Embraces the highest level of logical reasoning
E__C_ Mathematical
S_________ Factual and observable
E_______ A proof
A___Y_____ Requires critical-thinking and computation
R______ Can be connected to other similar research topics
C________S__ Far-reaching, extensive, global, complete, thorough
_
H___ Difficult to conduct

9|K C G
What I can do: From the web diagram you completed above, select one field,
category, or subcategory and construct a research title below. Apply your previous learning in
Practical Research I. It is better to base your title from “What’s more”.

REMEMBER! Elements of Research Title

FOCUS- the specific variable to be tested

AREA OF INTEREST- the specific object, tool, program, system, etc.
RESPONDENTS- the subjects of the study
RESEARCH LOCALE- the specific place where the data was collected
PROGRAM- the possible intervention to be proposed

Assessment: Based from the research title sample you have constructed above, write
at least two research questions below.
