Part II
Changes in the Properties of the Materials when Exposed to Different Temperatures
Background Information for Learners
Matter does not stay in its known state all the time. There are certain conditions when a material changes its
properties. Elements like heat, water, moisture, and so on can have an effect on the properties a material has.
And with these changes, the physical and chemical properties of matter are also affected. Let us look at these
two changes that occur in matter when exposed to different conditions.
A substance’s state of matter is an extrinsic property, meaning it can be changed by its environment.
Physical conditions like temperature and pressure affect state of matter. Both temperature and pressure can be
measured, and state changes can be observed.
You know the terms heat and temperature very well. You encounter them almost every day. You also
might have interchanged their meaning sometimes. Though heat and temperature are related, they are not the
same. Heat is a form of energy, while temperature is the measure of hotness or coldness of an object. The
amount of heat in an object has something to do with its temperature.
Temperature is the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or an object, especially as expressed
according to a comparative scale and shown by a thermometer or perceived by touch. Some materials may
change their size, shape, texture and form when heated. When heated, solid materials change to liquid. When
cooled, liquid materials are change to solid. The materials (crayon/chocolate/butter and margarine) change their
form from solid to liquid when heated. They also change in size, shape and texture. The materials change back
to their form from solid to liquid when cooled.
Matter can move from one state to another. There are factors affecting this change of state, and heat is
the most common factor. Solid can change into liquid, liquid can change into gas, and gas can change into
liquid due to the presence or absence of heat. Here are some examples of how heat can affect the changes in
materials.
In the Presence of Heat:
1. The changing of solid to liquid is known as melting. Adding high temperature which results to heat is
required for this to happen. An example is the heating of butter. When it is heated, it melts, turning into liquid
butter.
2. The changing of liquid to gas is known as evaporation. Adding high temperature which results to
heat is also required for this. An example is when boiling water. When water is boiled, it changes into water
vapor which is the gaseous state of water.
In the Absence of Heat:
1. The changing of gas to liquid is known as condensation. Removing heat and low temperature is
required for this to happen. An example is the dew that forms on leaves in the morning. Warm air hits the cool
surface of the leaves which results to dew.
2. The changing of liquid to solid is known as freezing. Removing heat and low temperature is also
required for this. An example is when you put water in the freezer, which turns into ice.
Activity 1 : Fact or Bluff
Write FACT on the blank if the statement is correct and BLUFF if it is incorrect.
________1. When materials are heated, they change their size, shape, texture and form.
________2. When butter is heated, its color and shape remain.
________3. Chocolate and candle do not change their form from solid to liquid when heated.
________4. Some materials undergo changes in their properties when exposed to different temperatures.
________5. When heated, some materials in solid form change to liquid and go back to their original form
when cooled down.
________6. Heat is a form of energy, while temperature is the measure of hotness or coldness of an object.
________7. Solid materials can be mixed with other solid materials.
________8. When solid changes to liquid it is called melting.
________9. When the gas change into liquid it is called freezing.
________10. The changes of liquid to solid is called freezing.
Activity 2: What Happens to the Materials when Heated and when Cooled?
What you need:
margarine candle chocolate pan
What to do:
Note: Ask for help from your parents or adults with you at home in performing this activity.
1. In a pan, put small amount of margarine and heat for a few seconds, observe what happens. Then do
same procedures for chocolate and candle.
2. Complete the chart provided.
