Purpose
To sensitize students with the Human side of the organization.
Present Organizational Behavior as one of the approaches towards Organizational
Effectiveness.
Enhance awareness of the students to dynamics of Individual, Group and Organizations.
Prepare students to enhance their personal effectiveness and improve their contribution
to group and organizational processes.

What are Organizations ?
Organizations are made by people who operate within them, and when these people enter organisations, they
bring in with them their ‘soft’ luggage of beliefs, experiences and much more.
What are Organizations ?
Bernad (1938) - “A system of consciously coordinated activities…of two or more
persons”.
Weber (1947) – “A social membership which limits or closes admission of outsiders by
rules…so for as its order is enforced by the action of specific individuals”.
Bakke (1959) – “A continuing system of differentiated and coordinated human activities
utilizing, transforming and welding together a specific set of human, material, capital,
ideational and natural resources into a unique problem solving whole engaged in
satisfying particular human needs in interaction with other system of human activities
and resources in the environment”.
What is behaviour?
The way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially towards
others
The way in which an animal or person behaves in response to a
particular situation or stimulus.
What is Organizational Behavior ?
In Definition of OB three features need to be emphasized
1. OB is the study of human behavior
2. The study is about behavior in organizations
3. Knowledge about human behavior would be useful in improving an organization’s
effectiveness
( Organizations are said to be effective when they produce quality goods and services at
reasonable cost without compromising on profit-making.)

OB is the study and application of knowledge about how people – as
individual and as group – act within organization.

Model : An abstraction of reality, a simplified representation of some real-

Input : Variables that lead to processes.
Processes : Actions that individuals, groups and organizations engage in as a
result of inputs and that lead to certain outcomes.
Outcomes: Key factors that are affected by other variables.
Dependent and independent variables of OB
The independent variable (X) can be at any of these three
levels in this model:
Individual: Biographical characteristics, personality and
emotions, values and attitudes, ability, perception,
motivation, individual learning, and individual decision
making
Group: Communication, group decision making, leadership
and trust, group structure, conflict, power and politics, and
work teams
Organization System: Organizational culture, human
resource policies and practices, and organizational structure
and design
