NARRATIVE REPORT ON MENSTRUAL HYGIENE
MANAGEMENT (HYGIENE)
1.INTRODUCTION
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization
(WHO) define Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) as the articulation, awareness,
information and confidence to manage menstruation with safety and dignity using safe
hygienic materials, together with adequate water, agents and spaces for washing and
bathing and disposal with privacy and dignity.
Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is crucial in ensuring appropriate menstrual
hygiene management among girls. It is, thus, important to improve WASH services in
Schools to ensure that menstruation will not get in the way of education. In the
Philippines, the Department of Education (DepEd) issued the National WinS Policy
(DepEd Order 10, Series 2016). DepEd conducts annual monitoring to track progress of
schools implementing the WinS policy. The baseline monitoring was conducted in
School Year (SY) 2017/18, with about 30 000 schools participating. The second round of
WinS monitoring was conducted in SY 2018/19, with about 35,000 schools participating.
The latest round of monitoring was conducted in School Year 2019/2020, with a total of
39,814 participating schools or approximately 88% of public schools in the country. This
report shows the MHM-related data within the WinS monitoring and presents the
impressive improvements which schools all over the country have achieved within the
last years. Soap, toothbrush, toothpaste sanitary pads are provided by the school through
DepEd funds complemented by external partners.
In line with this, San Roque Elementary School implemented Menstrual Hygiene
Management program, orientation, and awareness among the students, teaching, and
nonteaching personnel. The Raims of the school's MHM scheme are, first, to increase the
awareness among adolescent girls on Menstrual Hygiene. Second, increase access and
use of high-quality sanitary napkins to girls in rural areas and lastly, to ensure safe
disposal of sanitary napkins in an environmentally friendly manner.

11.ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED
The Program on Menstrual Hygiene Management is as follows:
1. The coordinator and its members prepared the different IEC materials to be ready for
the program
2. Tap stakeholders for the donations of sanitary napkins and soaps.
3.The coordinator conducted an orientation during Monday flag ceremony and
disseminated by the advisers thru room-to-room information sharing discussion about
Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).
4. Daily monitoring of records on number of donated and used pads and maintaining
cleanliness in Girls changing area.
III.IMPACT
1. The students and teaching staff of SAN ROQUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL have
been aware of the importance of Menstrual Hygiene Management.
2. It increases the capacity of students and teachers on how to manage the use and
maintain cleanliness of washing/changing area and the proper disposal of sanitary pads.
3. The weekly discussions about MHM been integrated with the program helps the
female students feel comfortable, not to be embarrass because menstruation is normal for
girls.
4. With the leadership of the coordinator, class advisers and officers, students have been
motivated and well-informed about the MHM program.
5. Tapping each adviser, teachers, students and other stakeholders has a big factor in
making a menstrual hygiene management program a success.
