ESWM Programs

The document discusses ecological solid waste management (ESWM) programs in the Philippines. It defines ESWM as the methodical management of waste operations to ensure segregated and environmentally-sound transportation, storage, processing, treatment and disposal. It notes that the Philippines implemented the Ecological Solid Waste Management Program (ESWMP) in 2000 to promote reduction, segregation, collection and disposal of solid waste. Local governments are mandated to set up disposal facilities and encourage practices like composting and recycling under the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.

ESWM PROGRAMS

WHAT IS THE ESWM?

refers to the methodical management of operations that ensure

source-specific segregation, segregated solid waste transportation,

storage, transfer, processing, treatment, and disposal, as well as any

other waste management activities that do not affect the

environment.
WHAT IS THE ESWM PROGRAM IN THE PHILIPPINES ?

In the Philippines, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Program

(ESWMP) is a comprehensive waste management system that

encourages the reduction, segregation, collection, transportation, and

ecologically appropriate disposal of solid waste. Under Republic Act

No. 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act,

the program was formed in 2000.

WHAT IS THR PURPOSE OF ESWM PROGRAM ?

Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) programs are designed to

encourage and put into practice sustainable waste management

techniques that reduce the production and disposal of solid waste

while simultaneously safeguarding the environment and public health.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF ESWM PROGRAM IN PHILIPPINES ?

The Republic Act 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste

Management Act, was passed in the Philippines in 2000, opening the

door for the creation of ESWM programs at the local government level.

These policies mandate that local governments set up sanitary landfills

or other suitable waste disposal facilities, encourage trash

segregation, composting, and recycling.

ESWM PROGRAMS THAT

ARE IMPLEMENTED IN

THE PHILIPPINES
The Philippines has implemented several ecological solid

waste management programs to promote sustainable waste

management practices. Here are some examples:

WAYS TO PREVENT

SOLID WASTE

MANAGEMENT
WASTE

REDUCTION

Waste reduction is anything that

reduces waste by using less material

in the first place. Reducing waste can

be as simple as using both sides of a

sheet of paper, using ceramic mugs

instead of disposable cups, or buying

in bulk rather than individually

packaged items.
RECYCLE

Recycling can be defined as the

conversion of the waste material into

useful material. It is the form of

green technology, in which old

material is recycled to make new

products.
COMPOSTING

Composting is the natural process of

recycling organic matter, such as

leaves and food scraps, into a

valuable fertilizer that can enrich soil

and plants.
REUSE

Reuse is the practice of using a

material over and over again in its

current form. The essence of reuse is

that it preserves some or all of the

energy and materials that went into

making an item.
EDUCATION AND

AWARENESS
An effective way to improve attitudes

towards waste reuse and recycling is

to integrate waste management

education into school curriculum

and particularly teaching children

about the causes and consequences

of waste disposal and highlighting

the importance of waste prevention,

reuse and recycling.

HAZARDOUS WASTE

MANAGEMENT
WHAT IS HAZARDOUS WASTE?

a hazardous waste is a waste with properties that make it dangerous

or capable of having a harmful effect on human health or the

environment. They usually have one or more of the following

hazardous traits or four characteristics of hazardous

waste:ignitability,reactivity, corrosivity, toxicity.Hazardous wastes may

be found in different physical states such as gaseous, liquids, or solids.

CHARACTERISTICS OF HAZARDOUS WASTE

Ignitability
• Petroleum parts washer

solvents
• Solvent-based paint waste
• Waste kerosene or gasoline
• Spent paint booth exhaust

filters.
CHARACTERISTICS OF HAZARDOUS WASTE

Corrosivity
• Acid or alkaline cleaning

solutions
• Rust removers
• Battery acid; and
• Caustic hot tank waste.
CHARACTERISTICS OF HAZARDOUS WASTE

Reactivity
• Cyanide plating wastes
• Waste concentrated

bleaches
• Pressurized aerosol cans
• Metallic sodium and

potassium.
CHARACTERISTICS OF HAZARDOUS WASTE

Toxicity
• Paints
• Stains
• Solvents
• Pesticides
• Old gasoline and others

fuels

WATER WASTE

MANAGEMENT
WHAT IS WATER WASTE MANAGEMENT ?

Water Waste Management is an important approach to protect water

resources and it is defined as the collection, treatment and reuse of

waste water in waste water collection network as one of important

infrastructures undesirable performance can lead to different

problem.
WHAT IS WASTE WATER TREATMENT?

Waste water treatment is the process of improving the quality of

waste water and converting it into ab effluent that can be either return

to the nature or incorporated to the water cycle with minimum

environmental issues or that can be reused.
