Dividing 3- to 4-Digit Numbers by 1- to 2-Digit Numbers
In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1- to 2-digit divisors without and with remainder, follow
these steps:
• Take the first number on the left of the dividend. If the first digit of the dividend is
less than the divisor, take the first two digits.
• Divide, multiply, subtract and bring down.
• Repeat the same procedure up to the last digit in the dividend.
• If the quotient is not exact, it means that there is a remainder, write the
remainder beside the quotient.

Dividing 3- to 4-Digit Numbers by 10, 100 or 1 000 With and Without
Regrouping
• In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 10 with remainder, the last digit in the dividend is
the remainder while the remaining digits represent the quotient.
Example:
745 ÷ 10 = 74 r 5
3 487 ÷ 10 = 348 r 7
• In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 100 with remainder, the last two digits in the
dividend is the remainder while the remaining digits represent the quotient.
Example:
923 ÷ 100 = 9 r 23
8 167 ÷ 100 = 81 r 67
• In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1 000, the last three digits of the dividend is the
remainder while the remaining digits represent the quotient.
Example:
5 148 ÷ 1 000 = 5 r 148
3 928 ÷ 1 000 = 3 r 928

Estimating the Quotient of 3- to 4-digits Dividends by 1- to 2-digits
Divisors with Reasonable Results
following steps:
• Round the dividend and the divisor to their highest place value.
• Compare your estimated quotient to the actual quotient to make sure if the

Lito can encode 63 words per minute. About how many long will it take him to encode a
story with 685 words?

Solving Routine and Nonroutine Problems involving Division
To solve routine problems involving division of whole numbers including money using
appropriate strategies and tools, follow these steps:
Understand
• Know what is asked
• Know the given facts
• If any, determine the hidden question
Plan
• Determine the operations to be used
• Write the number sentence
Solve
• Use the operation to solve
Check and Look Back
• Write the correct answer
Non-routine problems can be solved without using standard procedure. They can be solve
by drawing a picture, using a number line, acting out, making a table, and others.
Example:
A total of 1 120 pupils in Bulacnin Elementary School joined the Dengue-Iwasan program of
barangay. If there were 8 sitio in barangay, how many pupils in each sitio joined the Dengue-
Iwasan program?
Understand:
What is asked?
Number of pupils in each sitio joined the Dengue-Iwasan program.
Given Facts
1 120 pupils Bulacnin Elementary School; 8 sitio in barangay
Plan:
Operation to be used?
Division
Number Sentence
1 120 ÷ 8 = n
Solve:
1 120 ÷ 8 = 140
Check and Look Back:
140 number of pupils in each sitio joined the Dengue-Iwasan program.

Operations of Whole Numbers
To solve multistep routine and nonroutine problems involving division and any of the other
operation of whole numbers using appropriate strategies and tools, we are guided by the
following:
Understand
• Know what is asked in the problem
• Know what are the given facts
• If any, determine the hidden questions
Plan
• Determine the operations to be used
• Write the number sentence
Solve
• Show the solution
Check and Look Back
• Check your answer
• State the complete answer
Example:
Louise bought 4 polo shirts and 2 pairs of black pants for Php 3 000. If the polo shirts cost
Php 300 each, find the cost of each pair of black pants.
Understand:
• What is asked in the problem?
Amount of each pair of black pants.
• What are the given facts?
4 polo shirts; 2 pairs of black pants; Php 300 cost of polo shirts; Php 3 000 cost of
polo shirts and black pants.
Plan:
Operation to be used?
