DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
6
The SSW40 offers the ultimate in simplicity and rugged design. The SSW-40 utilizes two
urethane drive rollers which provide strong precise gripping action on drill pipe and collars.
DESCRIPTION
Designed to be compact and self contained; the SSW-40 does not require a stand-alone
power pack. All the gripping pressure and spinning torque are generated at the drill pipe
spinner. In standard rig installations a spring hanger assembly is provided.
Keep in climate controlled environment where possible. The SSW-40 should be palletized
and covered to be kept dry and free from moisture. The SSW-40 should be inspected for
any rust or corrosion especially after storage and before use. All points of any type of rust
or corrosion should be properly maintained or replaced prior to start up. Apply grease to all
lubrication points prior to start up. Any parts showing signs of rust or corrosion should be
thoroughly inspected prior to operation.
Location of I.D.
Numbers: This very important identification number is stamped on a plate and is attached
to the back side of the unit. The plate will list the name and location of the manufacturer
and also the identification number of the tool.

Safety First
Regardless of how enthusiastic you may be about beginning the job at hand, take the time
to ensure that your safety is not jeopardized. A moment’s lack of attention may result in an

accident, as can failure to observe certain simple safety precautions. The possibility of an
accident will always exist. Be aware of your environment and adhere to your company’s
safety guidelines. Above all else, please use common sense.

INSTALLATION
INSTALATION
11
Instalation
The SSW-40 will rotate drill pipe in both directions and consequently swing in either
direction. The SSW-40 must be equipped with two BACKUP LINES . These two backup lines
or cables need to be attached to derrick legs or a comparable structure. Attachment should
be made so that the swinging movement of the wrench is restrict to less than one foot in
either direction.
Typically a 1 ¼” pneumatic line should be run to the rig floor. A valve is required at this
INSTALLATION
point in order to shut-off air when maintenance to the tool is required. Install a 1 ½”, 200
PSI minimum, pneumatic hose from the valve to the spinner. Keep the hose and piping as
short as possible with as few fittings as possible.
Using a ½” to 5/8” cable attached to the mast will allow an easy free swing around the
wellbore. The higher up the fixed line is, the easier it will be to manuver the SSW-40 to its
desired location.
Use a cross member to attach the line from giving you about 2’ to 3’ from the pipe
centerline. Across from the driller and where the chainman normally stands is where the
SSW-40 should be positioned.
Position the lift cylinder at the midpoint of its stroke and 5’ from the floor. This will give a
varience of 12” up or down the pipe.
The two shakles at the end of the SSW-40 are to be used with TWO back up cables. These
two cables will have to restrict the rotational movement to one foot in either direction. It
is VERY important that these cables do not cross. Having only one cable would allow the
posiblitiy of having the SSW-40 swing into the opperator causing injury.
Connect the air line. As listed in the description, the SSW-40 requires 250 cfm air flow at
90 to 125 psi air pressure. The air regulator provided will prevent damage from too much
air pressure. When installing, use the least amount of fittings as possible and route the air
directly from the supply keeping the distance as short as possible.
In an area that is easily accessable and well protected, run a 1 1/4” air line up to the rig floor.
This will aid in maintenance.
12
INSTALLATION
NOTE: Take the time to make sure the back up lines are
properly attached and that safety regulations are observed.
13
OPERATIONS
OPERATION
14
Positioning the SSW-40
Before you begin operation, make sure that the back up lines are connected to the SSW-40.
Please refer to the Instalation section of this
guide before proceeding.
Turn the adjustment screw to engage the socket. Proper clearance is ½” between the pipe
and the front rollers. Turn the adjustment handle either clockwise or counter clockwise to
close the distance between the bodies or to open it up.
Pull the clamp control lever to unclamp the pipe and then swing the SSW-40 away from the
pipe.
Motor Direction
Position the lockout to spin in the desired direction, spin in or spin out. The lockout will
prevent spinning in the undesired direction.
Push the throttle control lever to spin in or
pull to spin out.
